"alizarin" is a word?

It's a pigment.

I broke a toe shortly before our wedding.

Ouch, how'd you manage to do that? Only thing I've ever broken is a thumb.

I still don't really understand how the toe got broken. I was ready to leave for work, wearing sandals, and knelt on the bed to pet one of the cats. I would swear that the top of my foot barely bumped the bed frame, but one of my toes (next to last, I think) instantly turned bright red from the "waist" to the tip, and later turned black and blue. There was a clear line of demarcation. Maybe it wasn't broken (I never had it X-rayed because I knew there wasn't anything they could do for it), but it took about six weeks to heal, same as the finger I'd broken six months earlier.

I *do* understand why the finger broke! I was closing down the lab for the day (everybody had to take turns, even us software people), and went to check whether anyone had already shut down in the next room. This involved opening a "barn door" (something like this one, only much wider and far heavier). So I was standing there, looking into the next room as the door finished rolling open. I was unaware that the handle would come to rest against the door stop -- with my finger between them. When I told my boss next morning what had happened, he calmly said, Oh, that happens all the time. (Why didn't they GET THE DAMN THING FIXED?! Betcha it's still like that.)

So I was thinking maybe this was the start of a break-a-bone-every-six-months streak, but if so, it was a very short one.

Yowch. Funny about the toe - you must have hit it at just the right angle to do damage.

That's clever. Is it clever? Why is it clever?

Yeah, that's all I can figure. But it still doesn't really make sense to me.

You never get to injure anything in a really cool way.  It's never from rescuing a batch of newborn puppies from a burning building - for me, it's always tripping over the pavement or something like that.

I broke my thumb from being violently jostled in a speedboat that thought it was a good idea to go zooming through the wake of a yacht. We completely left the water each time, and landing again meant being painfully thrown around - which bent my thumb completely backwards and had it swell up like a purple balloon for a week.
