There are situations where the automated Smiley toolbar doesn't work well (or at all) -- if you're using the Mobile theme ("skin") for this forum, for example, or if your slow internet service is even slower than usual today.  But I've found a way that I can use smileys even on slow-internet days -- I just type in the codes myself (which can be easier than scanning through the entire smiley toolbar, in any case).

Smiley codes are typically just a single word with a colon glued to each end, so it's easy enough to memorize a few of your favorites.  I'll start off with a few basic Smileys now, with their codes, and will add to this list from time to time.  Note that I cannot display the actual code, because then all that most of you would see would be the Smileys.  So I have inserted spaces between characters and/or words, which you will need to omit when you type in the code.  (I've included the actual Smileys in the chart as well, for those of you who are set up to see them.)

Code . . . . Smiley . . Description

: ) . . . . . . . . :) . . . Smiley face in yellow paint
: smile : . . . . . . . . Standard yellow smiley face

; ) . . . . . . . . . ;) . . . .Yellow winking face (note that's semicolon, not colon, in this one)
: P . . . . . . . . :P . . . .Yellow smiley face with tongue sticking/hanging out
: D . . . . . . . . :D . . . .Yellow grinning face
: LOL : . . . . . . . . . Yellow laughing face
: ( . . . . . . . . . :( . . . . Yellow frowning face
: angry : . . . . . . . . .Yellow indignant face
: mellow : . . . . . . . .Yellow neutral face

: huh : . . . . .  . . . . Yellow puzzled face

Oops! and that's as many smileys (10) as the forum software currently allows in a single post.  So I'll add more in subsequent posts.

Notes:  Smileys are not case-sensitive (so, for example, you can type either LOL or lol and either SMILE or smile -- I've just used whichever I thought would be easier to read on this chart).

I should probably point out that the wordless smiley CODES themselves are probably the oldest emoticons -- if you rotate your computer screen ninety degrees to the right (so that "left" is now "up"), you may notice that they look something like faces -- which can make it easy to remember the wordless smiley codes!

Glad to hear that, Jess.  If the Smiley toolbar isn't working for you, typing the codes by hand can be well worth the extra effort.  Using even a very limited assortment of Smileys can make it much easier for people to understand posts the way they're actually intended -- which can avoid misunderstandings and maybe even hurt feelings.  Besides, as you already know, Smileys are fun!

OK, here come ten more (again, you'll need to omit any internal spaces):

Code . . . . Smiley . . Description

^ _ ^ . . . . .  ^_^ . . . . . Yellow happy / contented face
: o . . . . . . .  :o . . . . . Yellow shocked or horrified face
B ) . . . . . . . B) . . . . .  Yellow "cool" face with sunglasses
: rolleyes :   . . . . . Animated yellow face with eyes rolling upward
- _ -   . . . . . -_-  . . . . . Yellow face with eyes downcast (shy, modest, embarrassed, sleepy)
< _ <   . . . . <_<  . . . . . Yellow face with eyes looking left (sneaky, skeptical)
: wub :   . . . . . . . . Pink "in love" face with hearts

: unsure :  . . . . . . Yellow face with eyes down & to the side (uncertain)

: wacko : . . . . . . . Yellow face with eyes crossed & mouth askew

: blink :  . . . . . . . . Yellow face with lopsided eyes, no pupils

I'm kinda "reaching" for some of the descriptions, so please feel free to offer your interpretations and/or refute some of mine!

P.S.:  CBS News says that this man invented emoticons, but it's a video, so that's all I know.   Well, except that one reader comments that he and his friends were using some common emoticons such as : ) in the early 70's (on typewriters), some 15 years prior to this man's claim.

Hey, I just report 'em!  (I'm only a Mod, so I don't have access to the set-up mechanism.)

Bendy, why don't you start a new thread in the Suggestions area, with smileys that you'd like to have available?  If you could give the Administrators an idea of what the emoticon would actually look like, maybe they'd implement it.  Even better, if you can supply an actual picture (even if it's too big) it'd give them something to work with.

That thread would also give people a place to post descriptive suggestions (for example, "a sleepy face").
