Sorry, I realize this actually belongs on the Cumberbatch News thread ;) but the polls have just closed in most of Indiana and in half of Kentucky, so the first returns should start coming in soon.

Nobody seems to be sure yet. Still counting votes. Trump is very close, but Clinton could still win.

Congratulations to our American cousins! They have elected the first president with the most famous first name in the history of cartoons! From now on, the Donald Duck puns are going to escalate along with the gentleman's blunders on the world politics scene! With our own elections a few months away, I fervently hope the French electorate doesn't fall for isolationism and *racism*!

I guess the good news is that at least Hillary didn't win. *sigh*

 

Hopefully the real Republicans in Congress will remember that according to the Constitution they respect, the President actually has very little power. The veto is really just about it. If they can just remember that they are officially in the driver's seat and curb the new president's efforts to continue the imperial presidency, things may go fairly well. And hopefully Mr. Trump's ego will be content with being mostly a figurehead.

 

Or maybe he'll surprise us all, and will actually listen to his advisors.

Did anyone predict this? Because honestly I was quite sure he would lose.

 

I look hard on why I feel this weird. Didn't even pay much attention to my own country's election, and now I actually feel like hearing bad news or falling into cruel joke.

 

I guess it's because Trump is the type of person that really pushes my button.

Loud mouthed general stereotyper that is not backed up with actual knowledge.

And now he is going to be in my daily news, with real power and real coverage.

What he said when he was nobody already drove me nuts, and they already had some power to affect some people.

 

I really really hope you are right Carol. I just never underestimate the devastating damage that these kind of people could do, from what I had experienced. And even when the limit of power is actually implemented, I don't really see that it would reduce the damage significantly. Even just something verbal, without real action, could be used for something crazy by those with agenda. It had been proven multiple times.

 

I keep my mind open that maybe the real power and experience could humble him, but I don't know, feel like I am betting all my life savings for Sekhmet the cat against the gigantic hound in Henry's vision, that turns out to be real.

 

I suppose I'll be less grumpy tomorrow.

Yeah, he pushes my buttons too. I guess that's why I never took his candidacy seriously -- because it never occurred to me that anybody else would take him seriously.

 

From what I've heard, though, an awful lot if people didn't vote *for* him so much as they voted *against* Hillary. If the Democrats had run just about anyone else, they'd probably have beaten him easily. Or if the Republicans had run just about anyone else, they'd probably have beaten him just as easily. So what we just witnessed was a race between two pretty evenly matched dreadful candidates. Unfortunately. one of them had to win.

I voted 3rd party for the first time this year hoping that Hillary Clinton wouldn't win as many of her proposed policies really are damaging to minorities and the poor (who are largely minorities). Also her email scandal made me not trust her at all.

 

As for Trump, I trust him with state secrets more knowing full well that he comes across as slightly better than misogynistic. He's got issues with how to deal with minorities but I give him credit for wanting to make our pathetically unsecured borders more secure even if his plan isn't the best.

 

Personally I went with the Constitution Party as they want to uphold our constitution giving us the freedoms our founding fathers intended without whittling away our rights as is likely to happen with the socialistic leaning platform of the democrats or be overly pro big business/the wealthy first as tends to happen with the republicans. Neither of which is good for this country because with both sides the rich get richer and the poor generally don't.

How about this for irony:  Clinton barely wins Minnesota with just 9 of our 87 counties.  She grabbed 4 of the 7 counties in the Twin Cities Metro Area, Olmsted (home to the Mayo Clinic) and the 4 counties that make up the Arrowhead (most of the Iron Range) along the North Shore of Lake Superior.  She managed to get a large chunk of our most populous cities.  If she had lost 1 of the 4 counties in the Twin Cities, she likely would have lost the state as the total vote was less than 50k apart.
