Another autograph to be added to the collection. I’ve just ordered a signed photo of Clive Merrison.👍

You are definitely the expert here!  I don't even know who Clive Merrison is/was (though I could guess he's an actor who has played Holmes -- or maybe Watson).

Sorry I’m late replying Carol. Merrison played the entire Doyle canon as Holmes on radio. IMO the best ever Holmes radio series.

this is a photo of him as Holmes with Dame Judi Dench’s late husband Michael Williams who played Watson.

if anyone likes the idea of Holmes on radio there are loads on YouTube .👍

By the way Carol I’ve just realised that I ‘liked’ your last post where you called me an expert. How arrogant was that? Oops!

The Holmes neediness knows no bounds. I just downloaded Zedge which, as you probably already know, is an app for ringtones, wallpapers etc.

So now I have:

A phone cover which is the door of 221b

My wallpaper is a picture of Brett and Hardwick

My ringtone is the theme tune for the Brett series

My text alert is the theme for Sherlock

And my alarm notification is Jeremy Brett doing his Holmes laugh.

I’m 52 by the way😃

I believe the proper response would have been the Thank You trophy, but I shall simply assume that's what you meant.  Problem solved.

I only thought that you could change a reaction if you did it straight away? Anyway I just changed my reaction.👍

I know that it’s never going to happen but do you think that a Cumberbatch/Freeman radio version could work? That question is open to all by the way. I think that the complexities of the stories might not transfer to radio like the simpler Doyle stories do.

Lord knows I could listen to Ben's voice all day . . he translates very well to radio, as we know.  But Moffiss created a very visually-oriented show, because they were in a visual medium.  For radio they could only rely on dialogue, not sight gags or car chases or blokes exploding out of 2 storey windows or jumping off roofs of high buildings.

Back in the day (circa 2014) we all thought that FreeBatch would endure for years and years to come, and I would have said, yeah, a radio version of some cases (written especially for radio, not just rehashes of existing episodes they had already filmed) would be great and would be a good way to pass the time between TV seasons.  Albeit, Martin Freeman's best gifts as an actor, his Reaction Faces, could not be used in the radio medium, and his voice is not attractive to listen to by itself.

Primarily this will never happen now because FreeBatch is on the skids and if reports of their estrangement are true, refuse to be in the same room together.  I think working together on anything in the future, no matter what format it takes, is out.  I don't want to be right about this, but I fear that is the lay of the land right now.  Let us pray for a reconciliation and perhaps we can get more Sherlock stories from this duo some way or other.

Speak for yourself!  :D I very much enjoy listening to him talk, with or without Reaction Faces (which I also enjoy very much).

I suspect you've been reading too many tabloids.  They're always ready to make a mountain out of a pinch of dust.

I think anyone who writes for radio would, you know, know how to write for radio. And I think the whole cast would be great at it. So yeah, bring on the radio show! Or YouTube series. Or Broadway musical. Anything, really, I've been missing Sherlock something awful lately; we need new things to discuss about it!

Well, it's tough for me to separate the voice from the rest of the package that is Martin, in the same way I can dissociate Ben's voice as an entity and just get lost in the dark-chocolate sound waves.  Ben's voice is aural porn.  Martin's is also instantly distinctive in a different way.  I'm not an ear, nose and throat specialist but there may be an uncorrected adenoidal issue going on there.

As for the tabloids, I suspect that you are right.  I don't necessarily believe what they are insinuating about the FreeBatch estrangement.  More than likely it's just down to these two guys being too busy to be in the same room together, not that it's being actively chosen by either party.   I am choosing to put that spin on it myself, because of the relationship which Ben and Martin have enjoyed all these years.  I'd like to think their friendship is genuine and will endure, and they weren't just work mates who, having finished a job together will go their separate ways for good and never interact again.  Either scenario is possible.  There isn't always fire after smoke, but many times there is, so who knows.

My general impression is that they have a very cordial working relationship, but have never really socialized.  That whole best-buddy thing seems to have been one part fannish wishful thinking and one part tabloid tell-you-what-you-want-to-hear.  Why, one tabloid went so far as to report that MF had been best man at BC's wedding, whereas I never saw the slightest evidence that he was even there.

@Hikari -- regarding what you said about MF's adenoids (or whatever), I know what you mean, and there's at least one actor whose performances I simply cannot enjoy for similar reasons.  But for me, that bit of stuffiness in MF's voice blends in with the overall huskiness, so I don't even notice it as such unless I consciously listen for it.  In any case, I respond to MF's overall voice significantly more favorably than to BC's.  YMMV, of course.

I never thought they 'socialized', either, in terms of hanging out off set, going out to the pub for beers and etc.  Between seasons of the show and those long gaps, they were both busy pursuing their own projects so I don't expect Sunday lunch every week with the couples was ever on as a thing.  I'd be surprised if they never touched base via text or tweet or whatever, though I don't know how much MF is into that kind of thing.  Though Ben claims that it was Martin who dragged him forcibly to some of the Tumblr art and so forth so MF is certainly cyber-capable.  I just don't think he really gives a rat's rip for fan adulation/speculation or any form of fan content online, as he has made clear.  This is not a bad thing, it's just the opposite approach from how Ben is handling his own PR and stardom.  Essentially BC is an E and MF is more an I, I'd say, and the whole fan aspect of what he does is exhausting and annoying to him, even if he appreciates popular attention in theory.  Ben's more hands-on with his fanbase.

I'd have been shocked if Martin and Amanda were not *invited* to Ben's wedding.  Perhaps if they were they declined to attend or were otherwise unavailable.  Even though they might consider themselves 'work mates' rather than 'life mates', you get to know somebody pretty well after working with them over several intense periods of 14 hour days over nearly a decade.  I'd invite some of my work mates I've known for 18 years to a (theoretical) wedding of mine, even though I've never been over to their houses.

It could presumably have been texting.  At least I've heard references to MF texting.  They are both quite adamantly *not* on Twitter or anything of that sort.

The bug has bitten again!

Id said to myself that i wasnt going to spend anything else on Holmes/Doyle this month as I’d already bought a few books but I’ve weakened and spent £50 ($65) on a signed photograph of Douglas Wilmer (authenticated by the estate of the person that the photograph was dedicated to.) I could have bought a Wilmer autograph for around £10 on a publicity photograph of him as Jim Fanning in Octopussy but I wanted him as Holmes.

NOW I need to economise for a while.

Seriously.

Cross my heart.
