@Banshee: Hi Banshee, Yes, thanks so much for this. Kind Regards, Douglas
-
Riiiight, thanks for all that info. Apparently, the software we use to host the forum displays that message to inform users that their identity is hidden, meaning they won’t appear in online lists and their last visited time and other details are not visible to standard users of the forum. This is designed to enhance privacy, and was likely introduced in recent years and I didn’t notice it being introduced, that is why I was baffled. So it’s not a bug, it’s a feature Your posts will still show your username and all that, so you can fully participate in the forum. However your fellow members won’t be able to see all that info (mods and admins can see it cos we need to mod and admin, and that’s why we were puzzled!) Hope that explains it
-
By the way, the little oval symbol seems to be an eye -- so with a slash through it, that means you can't be seen.
-
@Carol the Dabbler: No worries, Carol; And thanks so much for this, once again! Douglas
-
OK, I logged into my test account, and it says I'm anonymous! So thank you very much, Douglas, you've given us enough info to be able to reproduce the symptoms ourselves.
-
@Carol the Dabbler: Hi again, Carol; Well this is very kind of you. Yes, it is displayed as an extra bit of info. within my mini-profile: So as soon as I hover my cursor over my D for Douglas "Icon", I get the D symbol popping up on the top of our little deceased dog's (SASHA) head, which is my current profile picture: And then just below that it has my name, Douglas, with the word DETECTIVES written under it:; and under that, it says: "JOINED OCTOBER, 13, 2012": But also, next to DOUGLAS is a funny looking little symbol that looks like a little oval thing with an oblique line through it; And when I hover my cursor over that thing, here is the message that appears: "YOU ARE CURRENTLY ANONYMOUS. YOU WILL NOT SHOW IN ONLINE LISTS AND YOUR LAST VISITED TIME WILL NOT BE SHOWN TO OTHER MEMBERS". So what a Classic, eh!! Douglas

We do need to look into that possibility! (But I'm sure it's *pleasantly* shocked.) No you haven't, you've reported an apparent software bug that's likely to cause problems for other members in the future if it can't be tracked down and fixed. (Trust me -- I worked in software support for 20 years, and tips from users were our biggest and best source of information.) So, if you would be so kind: Is the "Anonymous" message displayed *instead* of your user name and/or your mini-profile, Or is it displayed as an extra bit of info within your mini-profile, Or something else that hasn't occurred to me? Thank you for your assistance.
-
@Carol the Dabbler : Hi Carol, No, look, please don't worry about this anymore; I've caused you more than enough trouble, and it's really not that important in the overall scheme of things; It's just very good of you to go to all this trouble for me; But please don't worry anymore. And besides, perhaps this Site has got so much of a shock in seeing me back on here, after a two and a half year absence, that it's probably saying to itself: "Who in the bloody hell is this?!". Kind Regards, Douglas
-
@Douglas-- sorry, I must have added this to my post after you had already responded to my first version:
-
@Carol the Dabbler Hi Carol, Yes, what you said to Banshee, is correct!
-
@Banshee -- I'm pretty sure Douglas is referring to positioning his cursor (the one that can be moved with one's mouse or touchpad) on his name above his avatar picture. This would normally display an abbreviated version of his profile, while giving him the option of displaying the complete version. (I'm not sure how to do a screenshot of that, either, since those things are displayed only while the cursor is in that position.) @Douglas -- Does it also display the things that I mentioned to Banshee, or does it merely say that you're anonymous? If it does show more than just "you're anonymous," where does that message appear in relation to the other things?

I checked just now, and Jagger's knighthood was, logically enough, for "service to popular music." I seem to recall liking some of his songs 'way back when. I'm not much into music in general, so I haven't kept up, but apparently he's still at it (and well regarded) in his eighties. Jeremy Brett is mostly known for just two roles, Freddy Eynsford-Hill in the movie My Fair Lady and of course Sherlock Holmes. The latter, especially, is very high-quality stuff, but due to his poor health and his death at age 61, there was precious little of it. Not sure how the two could be compared. (Though I won't exactly argue with you. ) We are NOT one of those stuffy forums that will scold you for posting in an "old" thread. In fact, as long as your post is polite, relevant, and all that usual stuff, we actually enjoy new input!
-
@Banshee Hi Banshee, Thanks so much, but I tried a few times to get a screenshot, but sadly to no avail. I'm sorry about this. Kind regards, Douglas
-
Hello! As someone who only uses the internet on devices where “hovering over things” doesn’t happen, could you maybe get a screenshot of what shows up when you do it? It would help me figure out what settings may be in play here

Hey, "this kind of thing" is the reason that there are moderators. Please don't take our job away! Even if it's not currently impeding your use of the forum, it's not supposed to be doing that, so the staff needs to look into it. So I'm glad that you brought it to our attention.

Sorry to come in late for this, but if the likes of Mick Jagger can get a Knighthood, then JEREMY BRETT should definitely have received one, in my opinion!
-
Hi Carol, Thank you SO MUCH for this, Carol; That's very kind of you; I'll do what you said, and I certainly won't bother you again with this kind of thing! Thanks so much, once again. Take care. Kindest Regards, always, Douglas Australia p.s. You're a LEGEND!
-
That's very odd -- you look fine to me. Oh, wait a minute -- maybe I can see who you are because I'm a moderator. Let me see how you look from my husband's account. ****************** Well, you look like Douglas from there as well, and Hubby hadn't even logged in. I'll let the Admins know, but for now just pretend it doesn't say you're anonymous!
-
I already watched some of them and I love it. Maybe I am going to watch the whole episodes but, this time, in chronological order, please.
-
Yes, thanks so much for this, Carol; Well it's just that when I hover my cursor over my name, a message pops up that says I'm currently anonymous?
-
I'm not sure what you're asking, Douglas. I do recall seeing a way to become anonymous -- but you don't seem to be anonymous, at least not when you posted this thread. Could you give us some details?

My Sherlock Holmes Chronology list
Carol the Dabbler replied to Chronologist's topic in The Casebooks.
You've got far more stamina than I do! I've read maybe half of ACD's Holmes stories over the past several years. I enjoyed most of them, some more than others of course. You're probably right that the adaptations have helped keep the stories alive. But if they hadn't been popular as first published, they'd never have been adapted. You'd be amazed how many people can read right over arithmetic errors and other inconsistencies without noticing them, because they're only paying attention to the plot. I agree that BBC Sherlock is (for the most part) the best of the modern-day adaptations. But if you haven't already seen them, you should check out Grenada Television's Victorian-era adaptations with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. -
HOW DO I BECOME UN-ANONYMOUS?!
-
Even with that, there are some mistakes that cannot be forgiven. I also like to write (I write, but I am not a writer) and I can't conceive not only those chronological mistakes but also simple maths mistakes. And speaking about that, I am now at the start of "the veiled lodger" and just at the very beginning we have another inconsistency: Watson said Holmes' career was 23 years, 17 of those were with him cooperating. Well, considering that Holmes retired December 1903, since 1875 we have 28 years, and since 1881, 22 years. I mean, I am sure ACD knew some simple maths, didn't he? It is not an excuse (at least for me), that he didn't like the character much. I will always love SH, but for those kind of things is that I found the original stories kinda disappointing, and I have a lot to say about how the stories are written. I have no doubt that SH has trascended due to his many adaptations rather than the original stories. And may sound like a cliché, but I consider that the best adaptation by far is BBC's Sherlock. By the way, can anyone really believe that Sherlock Holmes retired in 1903 until his death in 1957? Because I DON'T. A man that was constantly craving a crime to occur, a man that shot at the wall when he was bored, etc, he retired to Sussex to be a beekeeper. That's where I think ACD could have written something more interesting for Holmes' end, such as being shoted, or making him have a terminal ill from 1903 to 1914. Those things would justify that he retired. But sorry, I am just venting. With that, I am three stories away from finishing, and having read all of them in a row for four months, I would lie if I say it has been an adventure that I haven't enjoy.
