Lately I've been noticing British people saying things that I thought were Americanisms (e.g., "pants" in the sense of trousers) and vice versa (e.g., I think "gone missing" or "went missing" is originally British, but it's a very succinct way of expressing a specific concept).

This has been going on for hundreds of years, of course. 'Way back when, if a character in a British play was supposed to be an American (probably played by a British actor, since the accents hadn't had time to diverge much), the first words out of his/her mouth would be "I guess" in the sense of "I suppose" -- but I'm pretty sure that expression started being used over there a long time ago.

Lanx has entered the chat!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9513-lanx-has-entered-the-chat/?do=findComment&comment=177888

Awh! Our cats names are Kiba, Graverobber (we just call him Graves), and Nova! They're delightful little beasts.

My avatar is a picture of a little black rat! I love rats. Used to keep a small mischief of my own, once upon a time. Been considering doing that again someday, once I've got space to keep them separate from the cats of course.

Lanx has entered the chat!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9513-lanx-has-entered-the-chat/?do=findComment&comment=177882

Hello, Lanx, and welcome to Sherlock Forum! Judging by your varied interests, you should fit in very well here.

I have a couple of questions for you:

	1. What are the names of your three cats?

	2. What species is your avatar photo? (Doesn't quite look like either a cat or a millipede!)

Also, feel free to reply to any threads that interest you, regardless of how long ago they were posted. Also feel free to start new threads. (Your first few posts will not become visible until they're been approved by a moderator, so don't panic if you don't see them for a while.)

Lanx has entered the chat!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9513-lanx-has-entered-the-chat/?do=findComment&comment=177881

Hey there!

You can call me Lancaster! Or, Lanx, if you're feeling a bit lazy.

I'm a thirty-two year old dork who lives in Pennsylvania with one of my partners and our three cats. (We've also got a millipede. His name is Simon. He's a very good boy.) I have an alarming number of hobbies and interests, but I'm primarily into Sherlock, Doctor Who, Iron Lung (2026), casual gaming, writing, drawing, and I've recently taken up the acoustic guitar and lockpicking. I'm also planning to start my journey into urban exploration in the near future!

I'm a bit shy, but I like to think I'm pretty chill. Feel free to say hello, though I may struggle in one-on-one conversations at times. I never know how to keep them going, hah. It may be worth noting that I am autistic and that sometimes affects how I interact with others, and how frequently I do so. But, well... Sherlock fans in particular have always struck me as far more likely to be understanding of someone who's a bit odd. At least, compared to some other communities. (I mean, Sherlock is the way he is, and for better or worse, many of us are quite fond of that little goblin, right?)

I'm also an amateur fanfiction writer. (And I've got to say, writing stories for a fandom from a show that has concluded and that seems to consist of roughly ~100 people and a single potted plant that sits in the corner... can be quite an interesting experience. Wouldn't trade it for the world.)

I don't know how active I will be (life is life-ing and I am notoriously scatterbrained) but I'm happy to poke my head in and say hello all the same!

Lovely to meet you all. And have a happy Thursday, if you celebrate! 🥳

Speedy's Cafe - General Chat about anything you like!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/1879-speedys-cafe-general-chat-about-anything-you-like/?do=findComment&comment=177872

Fair enough

Speedy's Cafe - General Chat about anything you like!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/1879-speedys-cafe-general-chat-about-anything-you-like/?do=findComment&comment=177869

Don't worry, I'll see anything you post here. Apparently, the software we use to host the forum displays that message to inform users that their identity is hidden, meaning they won’t appear in online lists and their last visited time and other details are not visible to standard users of the forum. This is designed to enhance privacy, and was likely introduced in recent years and I didn’t notice it being introduced, that is why I was baffled.

So it’s not a bug, it’s a feature Your posts will still show your username and all that, so you can fully participate in the forum. However your fellow members won’t be able to see all that info (mods and admins can see it cos we need to mod and admin, and that’s why we were puzzled!)

	Hope that explains it

HOW DO I BECOME UN-ANONYMOUS?!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9498-how-do-i-become-un-anonymous/?do=findComment&comment=177839

By the way, the little oval symbol seems to be an eye -- so with a slash through it, that means you can't be seen.

HOW DO I BECOME UN-ANONYMOUS?!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9498-how-do-i-become-un-anonymous/?do=findComment&comment=177838

@Carol the Dabbler: No worries, Carol; And thanks so much for this, once again!

Yes, it is displayed as an extra bit of info. within my mini-profile:

So as soon as I hover my cursor over my D for Douglas "Icon", I get the D symbol popping up on the top of our little deceased dog's (SASHA) head, which is my current profile picture:

And then just below that it has my name, Douglas, with the word DETECTIVES written under it:; and under that, it says: "JOINED OCTOBER, 13, 2012":

But also, next to DOUGLAS is a funny looking little symbol that looks like a little oval thing with an oblique line through it; And when I hover my cursor over that thing, here is the message that appears:

"YOU ARE CURRENTLY ANONYMOUS. YOU WILL NOT SHOW IN ONLINE LISTS AND YOUR LAST VISITED TIME WILL NOT BE SHOWN TO OTHER MEMBERS".

	So what a Classic, eh!!

	Douglas

HOW DO I BECOME UN-ANONYMOUS?!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9498-how-do-i-become-un-anonymous/?do=findComment&comment=177832

We do need to look into that possibility! (But I'm sure it's *pleasantly* shocked.)

No you haven't, you've reported an apparent software bug that's likely to cause problems for other members in the future if it can't be tracked down and fixed. (Trust me -- I worked in software support for 20 years, and tips from users were our biggest and best source of information.)

So, if you would be so kind:

Is the "Anonymous" message displayed *instead* of your user name and/or your mini-profile,

Or is it displayed as an extra bit of info within your mini-profile,

Or something else that hasn't occurred to me?

	Thank you for your assistance.

HOW DO I BECOME UN-ANONYMOUS?!

https://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/9498-how-do-i-become-un-anonymous/?do=findComment&comment=177831

@Carol the Dabbler : Hi Carol,

No, look, please don't worry about this anymore; I've caused you more than enough trouble, and it's really not that important in the overall scheme of things; It's just very good of you to go to all this trouble for me; But please don't worry anymore.

And besides, perhaps this Site has got so much of a shock in seeing me back on here, after a two and a half year absence, that it's probably saying to itself: "Who in the bloody hell is this?!".
