What is it with women and Faramir (or Aragorn, for that matter)? I think he's pretty boring, in book or film. I prefer Boromir, to he be honest (especially as played by Sean Bean...). More believable. More flawed. More human.

I guess the "proper heroes" just aren't my thing. I need my heroic characters to have something - well, I don't know. Like, Frodo and Bilbo are okay because they are Hobbits. Hobbits are pretty unheroic by nature, so that's fine. Or Gandalf is okay because he's really old, and besides, he's funny and wise and nobody's love interest (that's often a bonus for me, somehow). Faramir is just way too perfect for my taste. He's not even affected by the stupid ring! Come on!

I really love this show! I read it airs as Murdoch Mysteries in some countries or maybe the Artful Detective as well? It is set in Toronto Canada, around the late 1890's and features a very awesome detective, William Murdoch. I describe him as similar to Sherlock Holmes - only sweet, compassionate, and nice. Ha . Very brilliant and makes excellent deductions as well. In fact, in one episode the character of Arthur Conan Doyle visits Toronto and meets Murdoch. I can't remember but I think the implication is that Doyle goes on to base Holmes on this brilliant detective he once met...its all in good fun though.

There are lots of in-jokes regarding inventions that are going to come in the future.

I just find it a really cool shoiw.

Anyone else watch?

I don't think I am up to date on watching the seasons though - I think there are 7 or 8 ? I am only about halfway through.

Of course the lead actor is a cutie-pie, not that I care about such things.

There's another new Trek on the horizon, this time an animated comedy called Star Trek: Lower Decks, that focuses on the rank-and-file crew members of a low-profile ship. I didn't notice any mention of which specific Trekverse it'll be set in, but sounds like it could be fun.

Unfortunately for some of us, it's being developed for CBS's ironically-named streaming service, All Access.

Rumor has it that the title for Avengers 4 is supposed to be revealed this month. I'm not sure why all the secrecy (other than marketing, of course). They claim the title will reveal a lot about the contents of the movie, but it's probably not nearly as telling as they're hyping it to be, lol. If it's anything to do with time travel/manipulation, anyone who's been paying attention is already aware that time will play a part in the film.

I'm not sure how to feel about this upcoming installment. I want to be excited, but some of the main heroes are certain to die (for keeps, this time), and others will probably be retired in some form or another to make way for the new generation of heroes (which is better than dying, but still sad for me). I'm not really ready to say goodbye to characters I've invested in for 10 years. It's going to be bittersweet.

Any and all Superman-related discussion is welcome here, but right now I have a specific question:

Is Superman immortal? OK, he can apparently be killed by Kryptonite, but if he avoids that, would he live forever?

I got to wondering about this because of the intro in the George Reeves TV series, the voice-over that starts "Look! Up in the sky!" It says that Superman "came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal man." Was the implication supposed to be that Superman is not mortal? Or was the narrator merely comparing him in a general sort of way to run-of-the-mill Earth people?

We seem to have threads for lists of our favorite everything else -- but I didn't see one for favorite movies / films, so here it is!

The idea for this came today when it occurred to me that The Frisco Kid would have to be on my all-time top-ten list. It stars Gene Wilder as a Polish rabbi lost in the Old West, and Harrison Ford as the professional bank robber who befriends him. As you might guess, it's funny and quirky, but it also has heart.

Dang, I wish I could put The Hobbit on this list -- but despite a few memorable scenes, the movie that got made just wasn't the movie that it could have been.

Movies (in no particular order) that I'm thinking of adding to my list:

 The Good Night

Star Trek IV (The One With the Whales)

 A Christmas Story

 The Music Man

... and a bunch more that I'm not thinking of just now.

So what are *your* favorite movies?

I know it's next to impossible to do this because you always forget to include one but anyway...let's see what might be in your album collections. Any embarrassing favourites? Put them in any order if you can't separate them.

Just to suit my own choices I'll allow one box set if you want to add one. So this is me...

	1. Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin

	2. Close To The Edge by Yes

	3. Clutching At Straws by Marillion

	4. Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan

	9. Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator

Moderator's note by Carol the Dabbler: This post appears to be haunted by the ghost of a Portuguese translator! When I first read Rebecca's original post yesterday, it was in Portuguese, which seemed odd, because I had already seen some of her other posts, written in English. Anyway, I used Babelfish.com to translate the post into English and added the translation to the top of her post, along with a note explaining what I'd done.

Well, this morning the entire post (including my note!) was in Portuguese! All I can figure is that a translation routine had somehow become embedded in it. I have therefore deleted the entire contents and started over, in hopes that it will stay in English. *fingers crossed*

So here's my reconstruction-from-memory of Rebecca's original post:

It is now known for certain that the next Holmes movie will be released in December of 2021. It will again star Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson, but unfortunately director Guy Richie had other commitments.

There are various rumors regarding the villain and the plot; for example part of the movie is said to take place in the Old West (thus raising conjectures that the story is based on A Study in Scarlet).

This is my first post, because I want to be in touch with other people who love Sherlock.

On the subject of tv detective adaptations I’ve recently watched three episodes of the series Maigret starring Michael Gambon. This is another series that I didn’t watch when it was released and I’ve never made any effort to catch up. I did watch, and loved, the recent versions with Roman Atkinson in the title role though so I was interested in comparing the two when I saw the older one being repeated over here.

I was certainly impressed by Gambon’s laid back detective. As you would expect there were lots of parts for actors that made appearances in programmes like Morse and the Grenada Holmes series so it was a case of ‘spot the actor.’ I really enjoyed these three episodes. No car chases or gun battles, just good stories. Well worth a watch. Which one do I prefer? I think that the Roman Atkinson version shades it for me but that might change the more I see of Gambon.
