I'm aware that Mary is a controversial character, but I understood why she shot Sherlock and for me she's not a baddie. Sherlock explains what happened. In his mind palace Mycroft draws his attention to the fact that the mirror didn't shatter. Besides if Sherlock thought that Mary was a nasty killer he wouldn't have asked John to come to the empty house; he would've asked Mycroft to help him make Mary disappear. Maybe he'd arrange for her to die in a car accident and let her live elsewhere away from the UK. Sherlock agrees to take Mary's case and John asks her to sit in the parlour like a client. I think Sherlock says that bit about the police figuring out she killed him to get her to reveal her version of events. He made some deductions about her before escaping from the hospital and cming to the empty house to think. Many viewers have pointed out she carries a gun. For me that's a plot hole. She didn't take a gun with her to Leinster Gardens specifically to murder Sherlock. Besides John and Sherlock wonder around London with weapons too and we're not in a John Wayne western, but in modern UK. Sherlock is trying to get Mary to talk and fill in some gaps for him. That's what Holmes did as created by Conan Doyle. What do you think of the mysterious sentence Sherlock says? Thanks for comments.

	Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is already a topic, but I'm really curious as to what everyone's favourite scene involving Sherlock and John is in series 3.

Personally, mine is in The Empty Hearse, when Sherlock appears in the restaurant and surprises John, I think that whole scene is just hilarious!

looking forward to hear your opinions!

I'm casually doing yet another rewatch, this time backwards. I often do this with shows that I want to analyze rather than just be entertained by, because it seems to highlight character development for me. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to have a thread to talk about themes that emerged and were developed throughout S3.

I'll start with the theme of Sherlock's understanding of and actual practice of friendship. Throughout S3, we see that Mycroft and Sherlock never had many friends, first by accident as children, then by being isolated by their intelligence, and later by choice. Mycroft has been the enforcer on this, as he emphasizes to Sherlock his disdain for forming any kind of attachment to anyone or anything and his feeling that this is a weakness, an attitude that Sherlock has adopted. But what do we see happen in S3?

The Empty Hearse: Here, Sherlock's understanding of friendship is at its most infantile. In fact, I think the writers make him regress a little bit so we can see the trajectory develop, although it pleases me to instead imagine that two years getting the pulp beaten out of you by Moriarty's network while you're on solo mission could make anyone socially regress. But here he starts by thinking that everyone in his life will stay static. He's frankly amazed that John can't laugh off his reappearance. And even when he (quickly, to his credit) realizes that he's wrong, he thinks an apology is going to fix it. ("I said I'm sorry; isn't that what you're supposed to do?")

Of course, he gets this attitude from his exposure to Mycroft. They say that siblings are people's first friends; while I don't know that Sherlock and Mycroft were ever "friends," there is a constancy to family that you don't get anywhere else. Sherlock can disappear off the grid for months or years, and when he comes back his relationship with Mycroft will still be the same prickly, contentious thing it ever has been. He expects that his friendship with John will be the same.

The Sign of Three: So by TSoT, he realizes that he has a completely different animal here in the form of his friendship with John, and he doesn't want to do this wrong. Luckily, being an honor attendant at a wedding is one of the best-scripted friendship roles in the entire world. What does your best friend (best man) do? He helps the groom with any planning, throws the stag night, reads the telegrams, makes the speech, and dances with the chief bridesmaid. It's all there in the book. We see a few wonderful flashes of genuine friendship, such as some of the wonderful speech quotes, the discussion with Mary about her pregnancy, and the composition of the first dance waltz, but otherwise, Sherlock is trying to be the best friend possible without having any organic understanding or practice of how that really works. He just knows that he's been informed that John considers him his best friend, and he's not going to muck this up.

His Last Vow: Which sets us up so nicely for HLV. By this point, Sherlock doesn't need instructions. Certain friends you are willing to live and die for. John is one of those friends, and Sherlock is going to move heaven and earth to make sure that he's not hurt. It isn't just the idea of recovering from asystole and living "for" John, it's also the goodbye before the exile. This time, Sherlock is going to postpone John's grieving as long as possible by not admitting that he's off on a suicide mission. This time, he knows what his death would mean. (And I believe John knows full well the broad outlines of the danger, if not the specifics.) So this is a truly adult and evolved sense of friendship.

Kind of fun to take the three episodes as one continuous "movie." What does everyone else see thematically?

Up until watching The Empty Hearse I assumed there were very good reasons for Sherlock keeping John in the dark about his faked suicide. And then I watched The Empty Hearse...

Twenty plus people knew about the plan, not just Sherlock's family, but also his homeless network. And the reason Sherlock gives John is a fear that he might be indiscreet. When was he ever indiscreet?!

I understand that John's grief added to the drama (though if you ask me, he recovered from it so quickly I barely see the point) but couldn't the writers come up with something better than that? Couldn't they say that there were suspicions and John may have been in danger, anything that would warrant him suffering for two years! But 'I thought you might blab' (can't remember exact words, sorry) must have been like a huge slap in the face for John. I suppose at least it explains why he wanted to punch Sherlock multiple times! I just felt it could have been improved on. Am I missing something?

Wow, the ending of Series 3 is one of my all time favourite cliffhangers. The moment the TV screens came on and showed the back of a man's head I just knew it was Moriarty. My heart started beating rapidly and I just got so excited. Since Moriarty killed himself in Series 2 I hoped he would return, that killing himself was a fake and all part of his master plan. But my hopes were extinguished by various interviews with Gatiss, Moffat and Andrew Scott, who all conclusively ruled out his return. I believed them because people rarely point blank lie about TV shows, and this made the reveal incredibly shocking. For 5 minutes after the cliffhanger I was incredibly excited that Moriarty was returning, but then I began to wonder. We only saw a GIF. The after credits scene doesn't necessarily have to be canon. And the more I thought about it the more I realised Moriarty maybe isn't back. I will be incredibly annoyed if Moffat and Gatiss are screwing with the fans UNLESS there is a very satisfying alternative solution to the cliffhanger. I have considered various possible solutions:

Solution 1: Moriarty Faked his own Death

A Tesselecta owed Moriarty a favour. JUST KIDDING. The first time I saw his death scene I thought that it was perfectly possible that he faked his own death with a fake gun and fake blood. We were never shown a hole in his head. We never learned what happed to his body, except that it WASN'T found by the authorities because Lestrade didn't use that fact to challenge the theory that Sherlock used Moriarty's body to throw off the roof. I would be satisfied with this solution because I don't really care if they stray from the books and Moriarty is such a great arch-nemesis for sherlock.

Solution 2: Trick by Mycroft and Sherlock

Mycroft and Sherlock could have done it to avoid his banishment. But this would be incredibly predictable and BORING.

Solution 3: Moriarty Planned this before he Died

I think that this would be an interesting route to go down. Moriarty planned for the possibility of Sherlock surviving and planned a "Game" that would take place after his death. It could involve lots of pre-recorded messages from Moriarty which would allow us to see more new Moriarty scenes without him actually surviving.

Solution 4: It's a Trap for Sherlock from another Villain

Possibly a new villain, the remains of the Moriarty network, a Moriarty fan or Moriarty's brother (twin perhaps?)

Solution 5: Moriarty is Richard Brook

I think that this would be a very interesting solution. Moriarty really is a character played by Richard Brook. Richard Brook plays an avatar of the real Moriarty, who has remained unseen throughout the series. Remember in the Series 1 finale, Moriarty used random victims as avatars to communicate through, and he didn't want anyone to know any details about him, even going as far as to kill the old woman when she started describing his voice to sherlock. He's doing thd same thing here on a much more elaborate scale. And Why go through all that trouble to keep your voice unknown if you we're going to reveal yourself to Sherlock and become so public in Series 2. Maybe Richard Brook WAS scared when Sherlock broke into his house and all the actor stuff was true. He is paid to be Moriarty's avatar, the acting job of his career. The true Moriarty is still out there, using a GIF of his avatar to let the world know he's back. Maybe the timing of his return wasn't a coincidence. Maybe CAM knew that Richard Brook was real or Moriarty's true identity and CAM's death allowed Moriarty to rise from the shadows.

Feel free to Post your theories on how you think the cliffhanger will be resolved.

The current discussion in the Subtext thread got me wondering just how many people are dissatisfied with some of the events in S3 - a vocal minority, or are we fans more divided on some issues than Moffat acknowledges? Therefore I put up this poll, to get a feeling of how our community here stands on these issues.

I tried to pick the three most controversial points in each episode (and I freely admit I was reaching in Sign, which seems comparatively conflicting-interpretations-free) from a general feeling of what has been discussed round here. If I picked wrong, please tell me so in this thread!

Nitpicking, but I found it really funny when he calls him "brother mine" in two languages, an expression which the dynamic duo of the scriptwriters unashamedly lifted from the Granada series, where Jeremy Brett uses it in both the Greek Interpreter and The Bruce - Partington Plans, without its ever being used by either brother in the stories.
2. Camden Locks - just N.E. of Regent's Park

3. Dagmar Court - I could only find an apartment building with that name about 5-6 miles N.E. of Regent's Park, so if anyone knows anything different, please let me know.

4. Blind Greenhouse at Kew Gardens. Lots of greenhouses there but can't find one specifically called "Blind" - so please let me know if I've missed something.

5. Leaning tomb at Hamstead Cemetery... well, there are probably lots of leaning tombs there as it's an old cemetery.

6. Molly's bedroom.

7. Behind Big Ben's clock face - yes, you can get back there but dang, it would be freakishly noisy.

8. Leinster Gardens - yes, it is a definite place just as portrayed in HLV with the facades.

Question is, why is the door on the street labeed 221B? Should it not be 221? Past that door are apartments A and B. Historically was the street door not marked simply 221?

What's up with that?

Continuing my other thread, 'Favorite scene poll', I have narrowed the selection down to four scenes, based on people's choices:

1. The pool scene (TGG)

2. The rooftop scene with Sherlock and John (TRF)

3. Sherlock's best man speech takes an affectionate turn (TSo3)

4. Sherlock fights his way back to life for John (HLV)

All of them great scenes, don't you think?

My suggestion, in order to make the final election more interesting, is to score each of these four scenes with numbers 1-4; 4 being given to your favorite scene.

I'll start out:

The rooftop scene: 4

The best man speech: 3

The pool scene: 2

Sherlock fights his way back to life: 1

After feeling let down by Sherlock shooting Charles instead of outwitting him, I let my feeling be known on facebook. Some say there was no alternative, that Sherlock was backed into a corner and there was no other way. I refuse to believe it was an impossible situation, for Sherlock as he has a natural talent for getting out of situations that appear impossible. To prove this I rewrote the scene I was unhappy with and posted it as well. It then transpired that it maybe because they are trying to humanize him, I make my feelings clear on this too. Here is both my original post, my alternative ending and feelings on humanizing Sherlock. look forward to reading your reply's.

(Post 1)

No way would Sherlock Holmes execute someone! Especially not because they outwitted him and backed him into a corner. Poor script writing resulting in Sherlock crossing a bridge he never would have done traditionally. He's a highly functioning sociopath not an assassin! Now that doors been opened surely he can just blow away his rivals every time instead of outwitting them, its gonna make for some very short future episode's. A sad day in Sherlock history:(

(Post 2)

After my utter dismay at last night's Sherlock episode I decided to rewrite one of the scenes. Starting from the point where Watson's being flicked in the face by the villain (Charles Augustus Magnussen). Throughout the episode Charles was using personal information about people to find there "pressure point's" and then manipulating them, this was illustrated with scrolling scripts behind his eyes. I think Sherlock would have used this same technique to defeat him. The problem being Sherlock was struggling to read him due to his calm impregnable exterior giving so little away. Charles was highly intelligent and used the same mind palace technique as Sherlock to recall information. Therefore Sherlock would have an in-depth knowledge of how it works and It's flaws. This is illustrated earlier in the episode on a recap at the wedding, when he forgets the hotel room number. Watson questions his memory mind palace and Sherlock replies "something's have to go". This proves the mind palace concept is not infallible, It's simply impossible for even highly functioning individuals to use all of there brain capacity. Reflect this reasoning now on to Charles. He has hundreds of life's filed in his memory, but as we see in the episode only the ability to access one at a time. His pressure point is his cool smugness at his own ability, and his week point is only being able to process One file from his vault at a time. Sherlock can then exploit this making it a battle if wit rather than a pointless execution.

That's the premise. Now cut to the scene where Watson's getting his face flicked and both him and Sherlock appear powerless and defeated. At this point Sherlock scans Charles up and down, illustrated in the same scrolling formula Charles uses and comes up with pressure point smugness! Sherlock then starts playing with Charles, getting him to show off (the game is on). Charles is enjoying the opportunity after all what's he got to lose in his mind he's won already. Sherlock starts quizzing him on his greatest achievements of manipulations and Charles revels in his bragging. Sherlock indulges him further continuing quiz him and appearing to be impressed. He then starts cross linking the information; people, events and consequences of Charles influence over events. He continues to quiz him in detail about these multiple scenarios. Charles is trying to access more than one memory file in his mind palace at once. This is illustrated by a brief flash of the information behind his eyes appearing in more than one column, he starts to show slight signs of being under pressure. Sherlock asks more and more questions, constantly cross linking the information, he manages to use his observational skills to analyse Charles now that he's showing weakness. Sherlock's now holding court, there is a shift of power as Charles starts losing his composure as Sherlock starts integrating questions about his own past (Sherlock is looking for ways to touch a nerve). Charles starts seeing in his minds eye his lists starting to become jumbled and merging with a pulsating feeling in his temples. He now showing signs of irritation, becoming angry with Sherlock and starts trying to get him to shut up. Instead Sherlock cranks it up a notch pushing him further and overloading him more and more.

Charles is still facing Watson his mind flashes 'pressure point Watson'. He grabs Watson's gun points it back at him and yells at Sherlock to stop. At this point the helicopter and snipers enter adding to his addled pulsating confusion. Sherlock keeps at it, even tho he's clearly putting Watson at risk, he talks about coping strategies like Mind Palace. About how Charles must have used it to help overcome his mental illness a way of organizing and memorizing to avoid becoming overloaded by an over active mind. How people with low latent inhibition if combined with a high level IQ can become genius, but conversely with low IQ suffer from mental illness. Sherlock: "you were in a mental institution were you not? what does that say about your IQ? yes you mastered a good coping strategy with mind palace, clearly isn't working now tho is it? you learnt how to control peoples lives with your memory, but don't fool yourself your no genius, your just a lunatic with a flawed coping strategy that's now broken, your finished!"

We see the words in Charles minds eye jumble and pulsate to the point of literally seeing red and then he pulls the trigger..... Charles is hit by sniper fire he's wounded and knocked of balance a fraction of a second before the bullet leaves his gun and he misses Watson. Watson turns on Sherlock for nearly getting him killed. Sherlock calmly explains a theory that a good sniper instinctively knows the point a trigger will be pulled and they can remove the target marginally before it will happen. Watson's unimpressed and tells Sherlock there's no way he could of known the outcome for certain. Sherlock reply's:"nothings ever a certainty but every theory needs testing." Watson:" i'd prefer if it wasn't tested on me." Sherlock:"oh come now, we discussed how your attracted to dangerous situations." Watson:"Oh so that's a given now is it? You've always got a bloody answer, well answer me this; how did you know you could break Charles in the first place?" Sherlock:"Moriarty!" Watson:"What? How? He's dead" Sherlock: "Obviously, you've got to admit tho he was a a higher class of villain. Anyway I remembered him breaking the glass safe housing the crown jewels. This made me realise my problem was one of physics. The stronger something becomes the more brittle it can become and therefore more fragile, then it's simply a case of applying the correct amount of pressure at the right point. This was true of Charles." Watson:" You sound as if your actually missing Moriarty!" Sherlock:"Don't be so ridiculous Watson, although you have to admit the worlds a bit duller without him." Watson:"your unbelievable! ok, well what about the eye flicking, couldn't you have stopped that sooner?" Sherlock:"of course, but it amused me, your face (Sherlock does a mocking facial expression of Watson then laughs') Watson still looks suitably unimpressed.

This version of events gives continuity to Sherlock's character, he is still a sociopath who puts Watson in unnecessary danger. Partly to indulge his own sociopathic tendency, observing with intrigue as Watson is being mocked by Charles. This would feed his sociological interests, and is far more in character than some grand self sacrificing gesture forcing him to kill a man in cold blood because of his a affection towards Watson. Sherlock's full of grand gestures, but he only uses them for showing off. All of this would only take a couple of minutes on screen and the rest could then stay pretty much the same. Mycroft would still be annoyed at losing an asset. Sherlock would therefore still undergo his four minute exile. Charles ends up a gibbering wreck in an asylum, after Sherlock breaking his mind palace. The mind palace Charles thought to be impregnable and flawless and was the one thing that kept him sane. This way they get keep a convincing bad guy they could always resurrect for future episodes. And fundamentally you get to keep the continuity of Sherlock and Watson's characters.

It's not that i'm a Sherlock geek I just have an over active imagination:)

(Post 3)

He's a sociopath, its not a grumpy phase he's being going through for the last 120 year's of compelling entertainment, and I like him that way. He's supposed to be slightly detestable and frustrating, that's his character. Why try and make him a fluffy lovable slightly eccentric doctor who stylized character for any other reason than being a lazy un-imaginative script writer. The same guy that writes doctor who is clearly merging the two main characters, but we don't need two doctor who series. And I don't want to see Sherlock and Watson's relationship turn into something from beauty and the beast. STOP Humanizing your ruining it!

Hi everyone,

Vote for your 5 top moments in Sherlock, and gradually we will narrow it down from 25 to 1. I have picked the scenes by browsing the 'favorite Sherlock moments' thread on this forum and from my general knowledge of which scenes are popular. If you don't like the 25 scenes I've started with, all I can say is that it's hard to pick. These are not all the 25 scenes I would have started out with, but obviously many of them are my favorites too

I'll start out. Oooh, this is hard!

We spent two years anticipating Series 3, hoping for some things, and fearing others. In some cases we were right, much to our joy or consternation. But in many cases we were wrong....

For example, I was hoping for a retraction or apology from Kitty Riley. She was an interesting character, and I was curious to see how she'd handle it.

What about the rest of you? What failed to materialize from your wish list -- or from your boggart cupboard?
