Hey,

I was just thinking - if you were hired to write an alternative ending to Sherlock, what would it be? I am defining "ending" very loosely; you can go as far back as you like...

I know I would keep the final montage but without Mary's narration. Or maybe with but it would be Mary alive in hiding somewhere spying on the boys, since I would write her out of the picture but keep her alive. Her flight in The Six Thatchers would have been successful.

I also wouldn't keep Eurus, I would try to redo the Holmes Family history to involve Moriarty in some major way. He would still be dead though. And there wouldn't be any third Holmes sibling. Or it would turn out to be Moriarty. Maybe as a half-sibling.

Why didn't he try to save her when Sherlock told him Ajay is around?

Sherlock goes to Mycroft's office and tells him about Mary. Look at Mycroft's face when he says this if you have access to this episode. It makes me wonder what Mycroft knew about John's wife. Mycroft says assassins like her don't die naturally. I assume she works for the MI6, among others. If she were a villain Mycroft wouldn't have even allowed her to approach John in the first place and would've gotten her out of the country. In another episode Mycroft calls M and that's Bond's boss. No wonder Mycroft works for the government. He has access to an unbeliveable amount of secret documents as far the plot of this series goes. John and Sherlock also behave like criminals at times.

Mycroft knows who Ajay is, yet isn't concerned about him. The guy knows something and is a threat to Mary, but Mycroft shows no sign of interest. Ajay could even threaten Lady Smallwood and reveal MI6 secrets! He's convinced Mary's a traitor. Then Sherlock angrily says "not on my watch" which shows that he knows a few things about Mary, others apparently don't. For reference resd my question on Mary shooting Sherlock, but not killing him. Shouldn't Mycroft be interest in a man like Ajay, who after years in captivity may pose a threat to British security?

Mary is John's wife. She's pregnant as well and a friend of Sherlock's. Mycroft is Sherlock's brother. Lady Smallwood is Mycroft's girlfriend (at least I see it like that, though it's not explained), so a lot of people are connected to each other.

I found this issue to be quite puzzling. It's another example of inconsistencies in the plot of the series. Comments welcome as usual, I mean that's what we're here for! Cheers!!

	Hello to you all,

I'm confused about the ending of the special and would be glad of your thoughts. When modern Sherlock is getting closer to the car suddenly we see Holmes and Watson talking about airplanes. This scene appears almost out of nowhere. Then we have a nice transition from a street with carriages to a street with buses. That's great. Maybe it shows that Sherlock Holmes a fictional character is timeless. That's how I understood it. I couldn't find a thing about this ending online even when I typed all sorts of things into the search engine in 2017 hoping for some revelations, a few months after the episode aired. What is your opinion on this scene that takes place in a Victorian setting? In your view is it in modern Sherlock's mind palace? If that were so, how would you explain the change of the street then? When the street changes we don't see modern Sherlock in Baker Street, but a view from the window only. Modern Sherlock is near his car close to the airport when the Victorian bit takes place is how I understood it.

Oh, I know that the grave digging and the scene at the hospital takes place inside Sherlock's mind palace. He doesn't leave the plane to dig the grave. Sherlock leaves the plane later. The waterfall is certainly in the mind palace. It's hard to decide what's in his mind palace and what's not so I gave 8/10 for the episode.

I thought we could use a place to zero in on possible clues to the future that may or may not have been dropped in TAB. What do some of these scenes mean? Are they clues, red herrings, or mistakes? Or just us fans over-analyzing things?

For instance, right at the beginning, we have "So far on SHERLOCK" and then a rapid sequence of scenes from the previous 3 series. But why did they use those particular scenes? And why are some of them out of sequence?

(Adapted from Ariane DeVere:)

From Series 1:
These sequences seem to be a fairly straightforward reintroduction to the characters ... then suddenly there's the imaginary scene from TEH of Parliament exploding! Is this a hint? Red herring? Mistake?

From series 2:
These sequences are mostly Irene, and the ending of TRF. Okay, that makes sense if you're trying to remind people of the overall plot. But why include this from HOB?

SHERLOCK: But there never was any monster. (The hound howls.)
JOHN: Sherlock?

From Series 3:
These sequences are all over the place at first:

From TEH:
SHERLOCK: Those things will kill you.
LESTRADE: Ooh, you bastard!
...
SHERLOCK: The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins ...
(Brief flashback to John outside Angelo’s restaurant in “ASIP,” jumping over the bonnet of the car.)
SHERLOCK: ... just the two of us against the rest of the world. (John head-butts him.)

OUT OF SEQUENCE: TRF Sherlock, handcuffed to John, jumps over the fence.
JOHN: Wait! We’re going to need to co-ordinate.

Then a brief shot of Sherlock’s grave.
...
JOHN: I asked you for one more miracle. I asked you to stop being dead.
SHERLOCK: I heard you.

From TSOT:
JOHN: Shut up. You are not a puzzle solver; you never have been. You’re a drama queen. Now there is a man in there about to die. The game is on. Solve it!

The it settles down and they close with the most significant scenes from HLV (but NOT Mary's reveal!)

Why is "we're going to need to coordinate" in that spot; to call extra attention to it? If so, what is significant about that scene in the overall scheme of things, anyway? Maybe just to point out that Sherlock always goes his own way?

On reading this list none of these seem particularly important, but they jumped out at me like wolf spiders the first time I saw them, so I'm wondering. Anyone else?

So... there were a few requests in the thread for The Final Problem to have more specific subthreads. Unfortunately, either my mod-powers are too weak or I do not know how to use them properly, so I couldn't make a thread inside a thread. The best I can do is this.

Since I didn't get any topic suggestions fast enough (i.e. withing two minutes :P), I chose to address something I would most like to talk about: How do we actually get some enjoyment out of the final episode? Because it seems to me as if many people were very dissatisfied with it.

I wasn't and I would really appreciate a place to vent my happy feelings. So, here it is.

Hey,

I'd love to do some more or less serious and probably rather more than less crazy speculating about upcoming episodes, and I noticed we don't really, really have a thread for that yet - we have crazy rumors, but I'd like to include reasonable theories, if anybody has any, and we have what we would like to see, but what we think probable isn't always what we wish for. So: The Game is on, okay? (And if we already had a thread and I missed it, I bet some nice mod will merge it with this...)

So: based on what we've seen and heard so far, what do you make of it all? Especially this period getup?

Theories I've had or saw other people had so far include:

- It's all a big hoax to throw fans off and get them breaking their silly little heads about nothing

- Time travel

- A crossover with some other universe (Dr Who?)

- Flashbacks

- Mind Palace (possibly Sherlock solving an old case in his mind to get a better understanding of a recent one)

- Costume party (possibly a very morbid costume party staged by some sick crazy villain)

- An episode not really connected to the Sherlock we know, but a direct adaptation of some Doyle work set in the original time, sort of as an experiment in what the show would have been like if they had not decided to change the era

Got any more? Care to elaborate, argue and go mad?

So, I've been thinking a lot about the Sherlock characters and what the special might tell us about them. I thought I'd make a new thread to discuss this, even though we've already been talking about it in some of the other threads.

I think I'll try to go over the characters one by one:

Mary:

I remember how after series 3, several people speculated that Mary could be an agent of Mycroft's, originally sent out to keep an eye on John. Now in The Abominable Bride, Sherlock imagines her as just that - although the person Mycroft really wants Mary to look after there is Sherlock himself. On the plane, Mycroft and Mary chat freely about MI5 security and he doesn't seem a bit surprised by her hacking skills.

If Mary has really worked for Mycroft for a while, that would explain why he seemed so little interested in her in series 3 and why he didn't bother to check her background - he would have known about it anyway. However, if she had Mycroft's support, why did Mary get into such trouble with Magnussen? That bit doesn't make sense to me. Did Magnussen know more about her past than Mycroft and his people? Did Mary, when Mycroft hired her, lie about her criminal record, omit to mention her "rogue" missions and keep silent about whoever she was on a run from? And Mycroft did no background checks on his agent, didn't notice anything strange about her CV? I find that hard to believe.

My favored theory right now is this: Mycroft didn't learn about Mary's background until after Magnussen was dead. I am pretty sure he made Sherlock tell him why he shot the man, and that's hard to explain without mentioning Mary's story. Mycroft might have expressed an interest in Mary's skills. Be that as it may, in the mind palace, Mary is working for Mycroft not because she did so in real life, but because Sherlock last spoke to Mycroft about her. Also, he is trying to fit the people he knows into the 19th century, and of course Mary wouldn't be "just" a nurse and John's wife. She'd be leading a secret life as an agent all the same, because she's Mary, that's a much too essential part of her identity to leave out. Sherlock sees her as "on the side of the angels", like himself, so she's working for the British Government rather than a criminal organization.

I'll be back later to discuss more characters, have to go for now. Laters!

By popular demand, here's the topic for the really outlandish theories (tv tropes calls those Epileptic Trees) and rumours about the upcoming (ha ha) series 4 that you either came across during your internet meanderings or developed yourselves. Doesn't matter whether you really mean it or are just clowning around, btw . Once series 4 is aired, we can then revisit this and determine who was crazier, us or Moftiss.

I'll start this off with a beautiful (non-serious) one that Plaidder (of Law Like Love fame) invented: What if Sherlock is really the father of Mary's baby?
