  1. It was The Mazarin Stone Carol. Sadly Brett was ill at the time and schedulers couldn’t wait for him to recover. Brett would have played the ‘great heart’ scene to perfection of course (leaving all bias aside😃) We did see glimpses of his more emotional side in the series though. At the end of The Blue Carbuncle he’s genuinely moved by Lestrade’s praise and Then he’s in tears at the end of The Red Circle.

  2. Quick update (sort of), Tim is aware of the problem, still trying to resolve it.

  3. I agree Carol. At least the first set resemble chess pieces which is an advantage. I’ve seen some amazing chess sets but you’d spend most of the game saying “now just remind me again, this one is a Bishop right?” Chess sets aren’t just decorative. How would you feel if you discovered that one of your taken pieces had fallen to the floor to be chewed up by your dog!😢

  4. #4 looks like a bunch of characters from the Terminator movies.

  5. They also combined a couple of stories for one episode -- as I recall it was the Three Garridebs and umm, one of the stolen-jewel stories. They did a pretty good job of combining them, I thought, though it was a real shame that Jeremy Brett was unable to be in that one -- I suspect a lot of people had been looking forward to the "great heart" scene, which was of course totally different with Mycroft.

  6. I like these comics of aliens trying to emulate humans.

  7. I've read the novel American Gods but haven't watched the series. If I recall he wrote it after moving to the US. It's a good novel but not his best. The idea behind American gods is that they are brought to America by immigrants that worship them and gods that have been created in the mean time in America.

  8. Besleybean, I don't think Ms. Chan is criticizing the Sherlock writers. Sounds to me like she's mostly pointing out how different things were only nine or ten years ago, and that what's considered normal has changed tremendously in the interim. I must however admit to some personal bewilderment over the current move toward casting minority actors in historically-inaccurate roles. I'm all for open casting -- there's no reason to assume that a character of unspecified race is white -- but if it was stupid or wrong to cast Italians as American Indians or whites as Asians (as used to be commonly done), why is it now any more reasonable or correct to cast an Asian as a 16th century Scottish noblewoman?

  9. It sounds a bit strange to me to complain about asking her to do an accent when the role was specifically that of an immigrant for whom English was a second language. As for the clichés, yeah, duh, this is a Doyle adaptation. Have the people complaining read Doyle? Like, at all? The original stories are rife with this kind of thing. When I first saw the episode, I thought they were doing it that way on purpose to recreate the original Sherlock Holmes vibe. I really like Soo Lin. And I think the actress did a great job so I am happy to learn how successfull she ist today.

  10. Gemma Chan (who is currently playing a blue-skinned alien in Captain Marvel) talks at some length in this interview about her first big role as Soo Lin Yao, and about how much change there has been in casting guidelines since then.

  11. My favorite of those is the one in the very first picture. It looks substantial and attractive, and assuming it's made of real stuff rather than plastic, those smooth, solid pieces should feel quite luxurious in the hand. Wonder what it goes for? As for the others, I suspect the prices reflect mostly bragging rights.
