Can We Suppress the "Edited by" Timestamps in Posts?

Even though I do use the "Preview" feature when I post (honest!!!), I will often notice an omission or some awkward wording as soon as my post is actually on the thread, at which point my only option is the Edit button. I would like to be able to suppress the "Edited by" timestamp, since in my case it generally means nothing more than an embarrassing "Oops!!!"

 

I have seen a provision for this on some other forums, but I have been unable to find any reference to it here. Please let me know if I'm overlooking something.

The general reason for this setting is to prevent denial of abusive comments by problem users by way of the edit feature. Having said that I have enabled the removal for members who are out of their initial moderation period.

... which explains why I didn't get timestamped when I corrected the title of this thread (see my "Capitalization in Thread Titles" thread for more on that).

Note to others who are looking forward to timestamp-free editing:

 

This change seems to mean that new timestamps will not be created in posts by established members.

 

However, it seems to have no effect on existing timestamps. I was just emboldened to correct a typo in a post that I had edited last night, in hopes that it would get rid of the timestamp as a bonus -- the typo got corrected just fine, but all that happened to the timestamp was that it got updated.

I just had a "duh!" moment. As noted above, editing a timestamped post in the ordinary way will not get rid of the timestamp -- BUT if you're smart enough to unclick the little box that's labeled "Add the 'Edit by' line in this post?" before you click the "Submit Modified Post" button, doggone if that old timestamp doesn't just go away! (You don't even have to really edit anything.)
