Yeah, I think there's rather more time jumps than the diagrams allow for, I suspect they were trying to make a point about TSo3 and HLV.

 

Is the time line in HLV hard to follow? I can't recall ever having a problem with it. Doesn't it mostly jump back and forth between Christmas and the "domestic" at Baker Street? (I really need to make time to watch these again ... sigh.) Maybe you mean the amount of time? I do still have trouble believing Sherlock was months in the hospital.

 

I agree.  I never had trouble following the timeline of HLV, or I guess I don't *think* I had trouble - it all is coherent in my head, but heaven knows if that matches what was intended.

 

I have a hard time believing Sherlock was in hospital for that long too.  I think you have to conjecture a few things that Mummy is counting in the run-up to "home from hospital:"

• Some sort of complication, like pneumonia or similar, that prolonged his stay
• An intermediate period where Sherlock was not back at 221B.  I know the traditional trope is to assume that John came back to 221B to care for Sherlock because John couldn't face Mary, but I don't believe that.  I tend to think that Sherlock (perhaps unwillingly) stayed with Mycroft before returning home.
• Mummy being inexact in her comment, referring more to the idea that this is the first gathering they have had since Sherlock's shooting and not that he was released a few days prior.

 

 

I don't think SH was months in the hospital, though a gunshot wound to the thorax wouldn't be just an overnighter . . they almost lost him on the table, so that was an ICU stay for at least a few of the dodgy first days.

 

Sherlock is lucky that his big Brother *is* the British Government.  He got the tops in care and note the lovely private room for however long he needed it.  If he'd had to rely on the NHS, he'd still be on a gurney in the hallway, very likely.  I'm sure Mycroft footed all the bills, pulled strings and whatever else Big M. does in crises. 

 

Sherlock met Janine at John and Mary's summer wedding, but he would have had to work on her for a while before they were to the point of J. sleeping over in Baker Street.  Not that J. wouldn't have been keen to do Sherlock the night of the wedding--is that not how she introduced herself to him, after all, by joking about the whole best man - maid of honor sex tradition . . inducing a state as close to panic as Sherlock Holmes gets.  By the time of the faux proposal and shooting by Heinous Assassin Mary, we may presume that a few months have gone by since the wedding and it may be as late as November.  No word on how long SH has been stringing Janine along, but he wouldn't have rushed it, because of his ultimate aim:  find out as much about CAM's empire as he could.  The faux engagement was a Hail Mary pass to hurry things along because SH had been engaged by Lady Smallwood and time was now of the essence.  Then Sherl gets shot, necessitating I'd say at least 2 weeks in the hospital with a wound like that.  But he, in typical SH fashion, was not a compliant patient and acted AMA . . swanning off to restaurants and discharging himself early . .and he has a relapse in Baker Street.  So he needed to go back in for several more days.  By now we were up to the pre-holiday season . . so when SH and Jawn go for Christmas dinner, Sherlock is recovered, but it's only been a few weeks, so obviously, Momma Holmes is still p*ss*d about it.

 

Now, Momma Holmes as an assassin, I can buy, even if she is 80 years old.

I agree with all that, except there's something in the back of my mind ... some reason that timeline doesn't work out. I'll have to do some research. Maybe it's as simple as Mary saying (at Christmas) that she and John haven't talked for months, but I think it's more than that ... ? Somebody help??

I'm not sure I was confused exactly, just uncertain.  It certainly wasn't what I'd call specific.

I watched this episode on sunday. I like it, I think it's the funniest episode I've seen so far.

Yes, it is funny and it is also quite heartbreaking at times.
