eta: And #3.

Valley of Fear seems to be a favorite among readers and that hasn't been done yet. No "Silver Blaze" so they still have quite a bit to choose from yet.

Does the the question though what stories will be adapted.  It feels like we've covered the major ones.

I think they've done all those that add something significant to the story of Holmes as a person, yes. But there are a lot of famous cases still waiting patiently to be made into brilliant modern TV: The Speckled Band, The Read-Headed League, Silver Blaze, The Blue Carbuncle, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Solitary Cyclist, The Naval Treaty, The Abbey Grange... to name just a few. There's plenty of material for detective work. I just don't quite know where they want to go next with character development.

Thank you very much! "Some of the fans are normal"... hm, wonder whether I'd like to include myself in that category or not :P

And then there was this quote:

"Mary’s absolutely here," Moffat explained. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. We don’t just off her. How would that be the start of next series, 'Where is Mary?' 'Dead. Anyway …' Which is roughly what Doyle does."

I'd be relieved to hear it if this wasn't the man who also assured the audience that yes, Moriarty was definitely dead.

And he very well may be.

There are 56 short stories and four novels in the canon; I think there is still material to mine :sherlock:

Some favorites of mine are Copper Beeches, Norwood Builder, Solitary Cyclist, Six Napoleons, Abbey Grange, Devil's Foot, Lady Frances Carfax, and Thor Bridge (this one is especially devious).

Oops!  I should have read ALL the comments before adding mine!  As you note, there a still a lot of great canon stories to adapt.

According to recent articles (such as this one) in a number of newspapers and web sites --

This has been the game plan since the end of Series 1 when we realized we had a crack on our hands with Andrew. This is something that the whole series has been building to. I won't say what it is we're doing, but we have plans. And I'm pretty bloody certain those plans will please people.

-- and also --

We knew what we were doing with Moriarty. We had a whole set of specific story ideas mostly for Series 4 but reaching into Series 5 ....

And in answer to the question, "Will Season 4 pick up immediately from this finale because it ended on such a cliff-hanger?" --

We're going to fully account for everything we've done, yes. There will be nothing left dangling.

And here's more of a context for a quote that we've been wondering about --

One of the difficulties in adapting Sherlock Holmes... [is that] there are no women in Sherlock Holmes, the original stories. You really don't have the female perspective on them. And they're slightly flat when they turn up. And yet, every time we bring a woman into Sherlock, it works hugely well. A female perspective on that friendship and on that man is incredibly telling, incredibly illuminating.

This is the part that gets me:

There was suddenly a kind of outraged response that it might not be back until 2016 but that's precisely how long it always is. It's always two years!

Doesn't the dear man recall that the hiatus between Series 1 and 2 was a "mere" 18 months?  I believe Series 1 aired in July 2010 in the UK, and Series 2 aired in January 2012.

So this seems to be the latest rumor, I gather. (Yes, I do google "Sherlock series 4 news" every once in a while. I am a teeny bit obsessed with this show. Oh well.)

It sounds more like willful interpretation and quoting out of context to make a headline than anything else, to be honest, but if there never would be another series, I think I could actually live with that. Better than a continuation that was bad. Much better! Series 3 didn't have such a bad ending, did it. Sherlock was back and this time, his friends knew it... The moment where he and John walk off into their next adventure is only minutes away. Fine with me.

I wouldn't put too much value on this.

I recall having read both quotes before, and I believe they are ancient in "media time."
