I can't survive hiatus! Who the hell let me watch a show that only comes on three weeks every two years?!

The only part I mind about the time between seasons is the anxiety that the next series will be no good (for me, at least), and spoil the entire show.

I'm probably the only fan out here who really wishes Sherlock would end soon. With a real ending, of course, not just a stop. I'm just an endings fanatic. I like my stories complete. Usually, I don't go anywhere near unfinished works.

The good thing is that Sherlock could end with series 3. We've discussed elsewhere how His Last Vow in many ways connects to the first episode, and how the story kind of came full circle there. The plane is turning around, John knows Sherlock is alive and on his way back, London knows it will always need him, there's a promising new case on the horizon - it's kind of perfect, actually.

Okay, everybody, stop! Stop now! You're all way too busy anyway! Just call it a day!

Although... I really do want to know about Mary, and somehow, there are a lot of better endings I could imagine, and... oh drat.

The only flaw with it ending now besides Mary's arc is Moriarty. We need to find out if he's actually back and how that pans out.

And we need to see the baby!  Well, I really want to see it, anyhow.  I want to see John cuddling it, probably kinda awkwardly.  Even though (as a doctor) he can presumably handle other people's babies just fine, this one is -- well, it's his baby.  (And please don't let it be played by a blanket-swathed inert lump.)

Note to the baby-averse:  No, I do not want an entire episode of baby-cuteness.  Just the occasional brief acknowledgement that our John can be both an associate crime fighter and a devoted husband and father.

Strangely enough, I don't really need to know that. I don't care all that much about Moriarty. I hope he's dead, because I think that would be a better story, but if not, well, at least Sherlock won't be bored so much and England won't dare send him away to his death for a while.

But there are other loose ends.

So maybe Sherlock will be split in half into two sections, and both of them come full circle -- one half focused on John and Sherlock, the other half focused on Moriarty's return, and Series 3 being the link between them.

Am I making sense? I can never tell. If you guys need it I can draw it out.

Makes sense to me too but I have a hard time imagining Moftiss being that kind to us. :P

If I understand you, you're saying that Series 1 and 2 focused on John and Sherlock, Series 3 is the transition, and you expect Series 4 and 5 to focus on Moriarty? I hope not! I mean, I like Moriarty just fine, and wouldn't mind having Andrew Scott back if they can come up with a plausible explanation -- and in this case, I do want to know "how"!  But I want the main focus of each series to be John and Sherlock.  The other characters are all important, but they're not the focus of the show, and I don't want them to be.

I meant more something like this: Series 1 and 2 is about Sherlock and John, 3 is the transition, and the 4 and 5 introduces Moriarty into the mix. I say 'introduce' because I think they killed Moriarty off too quickly. For me he wasn't really introduced; he was just sort of there but not there, you know? And then he was gone.

So you expect it to become a threesome -- but not the one with Mary.

A...threesome?

No, I just don't see Moriarty coming back at all except in flashbacks or the mind palace.  I think his actual death on Bart's rooftop would have been verified by too many qualified people "on the side of the angels" to have ever been faked.

I think Moriarty will only show up as a type of "ghost in the machine" but, his death was only by word of mouth as far as John and the police go as some how Moriarty's body was not recovered as far as Anderson's theory goes and Mycroft's reaction was a bit....I don't know....suspicious? But I do believe that Moriarty is dead...at least I'm hoping so.

Well, Mark Gatiss is saying that the "Christmas" special will "completely" resolve the mystery of the apparent return of Moriarty:

... but he's also saying that it may not be a Christmas special:

It will be finished, of course, by the end of spring, [but] when they show it is entirely down to the schedulers. It would fit as a Christmas special but there’s no guarantee of that...."

I like how it states "but Gatiss says viewers should assume nothing."

We assume nothing but whatever would lead us to further want to go "Moftiss!!!!!!!!" with mixed emotions, and we expect just about anything because of the previous moments of the above Moftiss sentiment.

After reading that: if I were Moftiss, I'd have Mary die of natural causes. In 2053.

Well, if it's like the other cliff-hangers, it will be resolved in about 5 minutes after the show starts.

But note that they quote Gatiss as saying specifically, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes" -- which sounds to me like he's saying, "Well of course there's been tragedy mixed in with the adventure all along, so what else is new?"  So I'm not planning to get too worked up, except on general principles (i.e., this is Moftiss we're talking about).

Just as long as we get Sherlock and John and they have ridiculous adventures together, with murder, mystery and mayhem, I don't much care about the details at this point. And so far, the series has been fairly benign. If there had been any really terrible, devastating plot twists of truly fiendish cliffhangers, I wouldn't love it so much. This may be Moffat and Gatiss's version, but it's still Sherlock Holmes, and with Sherlock Holmes, all is usually well at the end of the day...
