Sherlock's relationship with women

Recommended Posts

I think he can 'use' women to his advantage, like he did in 'His Last Vow' - but whether or not he can actually 'fall in love' with a woman remains to be seen.   :sherlock2:  :inlove:

It certainly does seem that he does care for Molly, quite a bit. He was mortified that he embarrassed her at the Christmas party, then tells her that he has always seen her, that she had always counted and that he had always trusted her. Then he tells her that she was the one that mattered the most and gives her another chaste kiss. But, again, being able or wanting to fall into deep love, that may be another kettle of fish altogether.

Ah, the never-ending discussion of and speculation about Sherlock Holmes' love life. I certainly never tire of it!

I think Sherlock is interested in a particular woman, yes. The woman. That's why she's called that. But what exactly the nature of his interest is, who knows. I did get the impression, both from what we saw in A Scandal in Belgravia and from the glimpse we got in series 3 (won't elaborate on that since we're not in a s3 subthread here), that he was attracted to more than her intellect. As for love... I have no idea what that means for Sherlock and I don't think he necessarily loves Irene, but I do think he fell in love with her (by his own strange standards and in his own peculiar way) and he still is fascinated by and attracted to the idea of her. I think she personifies "desire" for him and that is not an aspect of life he seems entirely comfortable with.

Molly... no idea where the writers plan to got with her (do they even have one?), but at the moment, I'd say he liked her a lot, as a friend, that he always was very aware of her crush on him and is finally starting to appreciate and value her feelings instead of callously taking advantage of them (I do miss those funny scenes between them, but if it had gone on for ever it would have been boring, I guess, and I'm really happy for Molly - I do know theoretically she's not real btw., but my brain won't accept it), but he doesn't find her attractive in the sense of desirable (which would, for me, explain why he feels comfortable around her).

And since series 3, there are two more women to consider:

Janine. When I first saw Janine in The Sign of Three, I took a violent dislike to her. After His Last Vow, however, I came to warm to her and by now, I think she's really cool and hilariously funny. To date, she is the only woman who has come out of a close encounter with Sherlock completely unscathed, she even managed to make a big fat profit out of him. (And as for sex, I'm sure she can get loads of that elsewhere). I think Sherlock probably enjoyed playing boy- and girlfriend with her; it must have been great for his ego and he sure liked being smug about it around John, but I don't think he found her attractive, body or soul. (I wouldn't...)

Mary. When John sarcastically says "you two should get married" to her and Sherlock, he actually has a point. Mary is a lot like Sherlock - so much so that he probably wouldn't be attracted to her even if she weren't John's wife. But she has every chance of becoming a kind of sister to him. His little substitute family is growing and growing...

I think Sherlock doesn't 'fancy' Molly but wants (like a lot of men) to have her hanging on for his ego's sake.

He probably is attracted to Irene's intelligence and finds it a challenge and I don't think her wandering round naked will turn him to the 'naughty side'

Sherlock's seen loads of dead bodies anyway so a little nudity won't tempt him! :sherlock2:

thank you all!

I think he likes Irene's intelligence, but not to establish a relationship with her. Regarding Molly, lacks the kind Irene's intelligence but of course it's a smart woman and not the typical beauty, but she's not ugly.

Hmmm Janine... I can not find her pretty or smart.. she's not my cup of tea.

I think Janine is simply vulgar. She is smart, but not at all intellectual - as Jane Austen would put it, her brain has not been "refined". She's not ugly, either, but her brand of good looks is rather voluptuous and flashy. I think she is a very good modern equivalent of the original housemaid who would have been a thoroughly "unsuitable" match for Holmes if he had been serious about her (which he most certainly was not).

A relationship with Irene. God, how would that work. Okay, to be picky about words, you can't know anybody without having some kind of relationship with them, but if we're talking about "being a couple", as I assume we are :P , I don't think there'd be much to establish between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler that bore any resemblance to the lovers we know in our "ordinary" lives.

I think Molly is probably very intelligent and in my eyes, she's also very pretty and charming and lovable (I adore Molly, I identify with her a lot of the time, I think she's brilliantly written and played and she feels so real to me), but I don't think she'd work as Sherlock's girl-friend because nobody would - it's simply not his area, he was right about that, in my opinion.

Janine I do not like her at all, she seems too vulgar and uninteresting ... I reckon that's why it pissed me off so much when I saw her with Sherlock. In my head I just thought "what?, Sherlock you have around you caviar and you just choose a can of tuna and low quality tuna!... something's wrong here".

Aww me too, I identify with her sometimes and I love the way she loves Sherlock.

I think Molly would always be gettin her heart broken if she managed to have some sort of relationship with Sherlock. He would just use her (like he has done) and it wouldn't occur to me that he'd have upset her.

But his attitude was not all about using Molly. Especially once he gains his moral compass, John and starts to realize that people do matter. He is truly remorseful at the Christmas party. In TRF, he tells her that she has always mattered and that he had always trusted her. That would be a huge step for him to admit to something like that. He's not a true sociopath, he's just had to swallow a lot of hurt for what ever reason, and one might be Mycroft.

Sherlock is a genius but as a child he was regarded as "the idiot child"....that had to  hurt and it leaves scars. And it can take a life time to get over, especially if your thrown into ackward social situations. No wonder he became a recluse of sorts. But if you have seen "The Empty Hearse" then you know how he regards Molly now. He isn't out to just manipulate her.

So it's not just me who is beginning to get the impression that Mycroft was / is behind a lot of what "went wrong" with Sherlock! I thought it was just my aversion to The Big Brother talking when my brain came up with that idea...

As for Molly, yes, my impression was also that he realized how much she "counted" during The Reichenbach Fall and that they are certainly not moving backwards from there. It will be interesting to see where the writers take her next series. Somewhere nice, for her, I hope.

The scene in The Empty Hearse at the end of their day solving crimes together is one of my favorites now. And wasn't it a clever idea to let Sherlock solve "A Case of Identity" with Molly in the room instead of John? For some reason, I think it makes sense that Sherlock would be more likely to be compassionate with a client like that in her presence.

I just have this feeling that Molly may get hurt by Sherlock - she seems that type of girl. He may be regretting what has happened in the past but he seems to move on to the next intriguing situation and unintentionally hurts her again.

:molly: :'(

He moved on because she seemed reluctant. He did deduce that she really didn't want to do it again. So it may not have been all Sherlock there.

.myself, I don't feel that she will 'get' Sherlock though

No, probably not, especially if Moffat and Gatiss sticks to canon on this, no one will "get" Sherlock.

I think it would spoil the "Sherlock Illusion" if he ended up in a relationship with anyone. :)

That's a very nice way of putting it!

First of all, I don't think he judges people according to gender or appearance . Intelligence is what matters to him. He trusts and cares for Molly , he cares enormously for Mrs Hudson. He knows Donovan is a b*tch.   :)

"The woman" intrigues him right from the start, sexually too . I think that's why he can't "read" her.

He thinks of her (S03. E02) obviously. We shouldn't forget that he has a porn interest, too and it's normal! (S03.E03) How great is it that Magnussen can "read" people too?!

As Sherlock's character evolves emotionally too , I think we should expect some real romance in Season 4!

Actually, writer Stephen Thompson suggested a storyline for one episode set in Sherlock's childhood.  Moftiss shot it down on the grounds that it couldn't use any of the regular cast.  But we did see several brief scenes from Sherlock's childhood in Series 3.
