The other brother

I don't think the other one is a secret...when Mycroft mentioned it there were a few people in the room and they all seemed to know who and what he was referring to.

The implication was the other one had done something stupid or embarrassing and Mycroft had been quite harsh about it.......and that it was public knowledge.

Saying that I do think the other one does seem to be cast out in some way from the family and could connect to Moriarty in some way.

Moriarty has been stalking Sherlock for a very long time though , since he killed Carl Powers and Sherlock noticed the shoes were missing, so thats where Moriarty connected with Sherlock.

I agree, s/he isn't exactly a secret -- but considering who Mycroft was talking to, "the other one" may not be exactly public knowledge either. S/he may be known only to parts of the Holmes family and some sort of government inner circle.

Possible , However to be a secret from Sherlock himself , that would mean 35 ish years ago.

None of the people in the room would need know about anything that old, and Mycroft would be too young and powerless to make any kind of meaningful judgement upon the outcome.

My guess is something more recent , perhaps Sherlock gave a hint in his wedding speech commenting on the church as being only useful as a career opportunity for the idiot family members.

Having the third Holmes involved with the church somehow would also make a neat classic ruling trio..religion state and justice ...and would surely justify Mycrofts@Sherlocks scorn as logic scientists.

Odd guess I know but I do remember a few canon cases for the vatican..............

I like the idea that Daddy Holmes had an afair with an Irish woman. Sherlock could have found out about the affair (as Benedict's commentary suggests) and, because he's the one who brought it to light, Mycroft accuses him of having spoilt the family atmosphere (maybe he stresses this negative stance so much because he was resentful of his stupid little brother being the one who found out about it and not him). Sherlock of course rejects the accusation of being responsible for all the bad consequences such an affair has on family life because "It wasn't I who upset her (Mummy) [ - it was daddy!]". However, maybe Sherlock never found out the full truth, which is that the Irish woman became pregnant and gave birth to a boy whom, as we know, she named James/Jim (she's not part of the "let's look for strange baby names Holmes-gang ;)). Years later, when Mycroft joined the British government, his security background checks unveiled that he had a half-brother. So of course the guys in the "the other one"-scene knew about this third sibling, they are all part of the government's inner circle, too, and would have checked Mycroft's file. But Sherlock never knew. That might even be part of the truth why Moriarty hates Sherlock so much - he thinks he should have discovered his existence as well, he is disappointed in him because young Sherlock didn't get this part of the story. That's why he repetedly tests his intelligence by giving him puzzles. He can't believe that Sherlock didn't know about baby Jim's existence - it's only a small leap from knowing about an affair to knowing about a baby resulting from it, after all; but Sherlock was only a boy at that time, and Moriarty doesn't acknowledge that for a child this seemingly small leap might be a much bigger one. So Moriarty thinks Sherlock must have known about him and hence he hates him so much. I think that makes perfect sense, and for the first time I can appreciate the theory of Moriarty being the other one.

Odd guess, but I love it! The conversations between the brothers could be awesome.

Just read something that speculated MARY was the other one. I so hope not...but if the universe really isn't that lazy, it kind of makes sense.

I agree, it's something more recent, whether Sherlock knows about it or not. Something that's happened since Mycroft's been in the position he's in, or near to. I'm thinking Sherlock knows about it and that's one reason he's so determined to stay out of Mycroft's control. As if he needs another reason...

Hey, I like that! "Mycroft is the other one" is kind of my favorite theory as well, especially if Mycroft is also really dead, because I do not really want another Holmes brother, nor a new character. So that solution would take care of those two problems, and also explain why Moriarty is so obsessed with Sherlock (and so like him) in the first place.

I don't really expect this to be the "official" solution, but I like it.

So many exciting possibilities with "the other one" for them .

I really hope they do something , or we at least find out what happened.

I would like to see what the MGT take on the long speculated elder brother is.
