But I don't understand why some people think it's funny to trick their cat or dog into this sort of likely somewhat scary (and possibly even harmful) scenario.  (It's probably the same people who make videos of their children that the kids will be cringing at for the rest of their lives.)

I don't know why they'd even need to.  In my experience, cats are pretty good at doing it to themselves, lol.

Indeed they are -- but never when you're ready to take their picture.  An awful lot of the pet videos online are way too perfect to be an "omigod, grab the camera" moment.
