Ha! Perfect. That's what Mycroft did to the other one, turned her into a bearded lady!!

And somewhere found a circus to take her as a side show.

(Portland, Oregon, USA is sort of a little oasis of weird people. There are artists and actors and writers there, as well as other people that would be considered 'strange' in typical societies. In fact, there's one section of the city that is populated by mostly hipsters. And there are bearded ladies. Weird is normal there.)

I know there is more than 1 Portland in the US and the first one that comes to mind is Oregon.  Can we say I've heard about it's unique strangeness even if others haven't? ;)

Or maybe the bearded lady Holmes ran off to Portland. They say you really haven't seen Portland until you've seen a bearded lady.

Hay! I ran off to Portland once, didn't spot a bearded lady, but I did spot a guy who surgically had "devil/demon" horns implanted into his head.

I was only there once.  Didn't even get a decent view of Mt. Hood.  Must've been in the wrong part of town!

Bendydoodle we  :hijacked: all the time I've noticed.  It is a matter of being able to make the off topic swing back around to be on topic.

You were off topic? And all this time I thought you all were suggesting "the other one" was a hood named Portland.

When discussing the unknown third sibling, how can anything be considered off topic?  We have hardly any idea what's ON topic!

Near as I recall, everything that we know (or have reason to suspect) is based on two items:

This bit of dialog from "Last Vow" (excerpted from Ariane DeVere's transcript):

SIR EDWIN: If this is some expression of familial sentiment ...
(Mycroft rolls his eyes, sighs and turns to him.)
MYCROFT: Don’t be absurd. I am not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion.
(He looks down for a moment, then turns to Sir Edwin again.)
MYCROFT: You know what happened to the other one.

... and a bit of audio commentary from a DVD, wherein Benedict Cumberbatch starts to say something, then decides not to.  What little he does say seems consistent with the idea that either Mr. or Mrs. Holmes had had an affair, an idea that has also appeared in a few Holmes movies.

Building on this flimsy foundation, we have varying degrees of confidence in the following:

1.  There is (or was) a third Holmes sibling (or half-sibling).
2.  Mycroft knows about him/her, and apparently had something to do with his/her disappearance.
3.  S/he may be a half sibling resulting from a Holmes parent's affair.

Beyond that, I think it's ALL conjecture.

Well summed up Carol.

Remember my Moriarty's-the-other-one theory from a zillion pages back? And you know how I said that maybe Sherlock doesn't remember Moriarty is his brother because the circumstances of their separation were so traumatic he blocked out the memories?

Well, what if Mycroft was the one who tore them apart?

So you're saying Sherlock murdered his own brother at the end of HLV?

We're talking fratricide, yes. Perhaps Sherlock knew Magnussen was his bro, perhaps not.

See, see????? This, THIS is where all this glorification of guns leads! Murder in the forums!! Evil geniuses taking over chat rooms!!! Chaos and anarchy throughout the interwebs!!!! Oh, the humanity, the humanity......

Then maybe that's why Sherlock detests Mycroft so much, even though Mycroft really does care about his little brother. Maybe Sherlock vaguely remembers when he and his twin got separated -- not the substance of the memory, but the shadow: the huge emotional pain. Maybe Sherlock knows that it was all Mycroft's fault, even though the former doesn't remember what happened that had caused that pain.

Does Sherlock 'detest' Mycroft? I think it's just brotherly rivalry - if Moriarty is the third brother, I think they would be united against him.

:sherlock2:  :moriarty:  Where is Mycroft?  Jeremy Brett has appeared now :brett:  who's next? :lol2:

No, no, no.  Moriarty can't be the 3rd brother b/c Loki is... er, Hiddleston.

I've never gotten the impression that Sherlock detests Mycroft.  Resents him for always putting him down about his intelligence and leading him to believe he was stupid as a kid?  Sure.  Dislikes how Mycroft can be overbearing and controlling?  Yes.   Even though he's never said it, I think Sherlock would be just as heart broken as Mycroft should something happen to his big brother.

They do seem to trust and rely on each other, in a somewhat dysfunctional sort of way.

thanks for the explanation: I didn't know that.

I don't know how I feel about a third sibling entering the story. I don't feel it's necessary, nor it interests me in any way, but of course if moffat & gatiss create a REALLY intriguing character, then I may change my mind..

But they already have a really intriguing character: Sherlock! Who needs more than that? I certainly don't. And I am wary of anything that might distract from his brilliance. There have been enough other geniuses on the show. I want just Sherlock being Sherlock - and unique.
