Since we don't seem to have a "Martin News" thread, I hereby seize this one and plan to use it for future Favourite Freeman Performances as well .

Anyway, he has been cast as a lead in American Hangman, described as a kidnapping thriller in this article.

I've recently watched a few episodes of The Office, and I like the style of it - it's like one big character study - though many times I cringe. I suspect that too much screentime for the boss will put me off the show for good.

I love Freeman's Bilbo too, but you don't need me to tell you about that! I do encourage you to watch the rest of The Office -- both seasons AND the two-part Christmas special (sounds like a lot, but it's only seven hours).  Speaking as one who also prefers her Ricky Gervais in smallish doses, I think you'll be very glad to have stayed with it to the very end.

Oh, yes, I've also seen 'Swinging with the Finkels', simply because Freeman was in it.

Uhm...

Indeed.

In my opinion, the main problem is that the writer/director couldn't make up his mind what kind of a movie it was supposed to be.  I'm all in favor of movies with a nice balance of comedy, drama, etc., but in this case, I got dizzy from all the genre changes.  Also, I would have omitted some scenes, and shown others that are only implied.

I can't fault Freeman's acting, though -- nor Amanda Abbington's, for that matter (she has a short scene as "Lesbian #2").

I can't believe that we missed this news -- I just came across the original announcement from May (!) in which the writer/director says, "Martin Freeman and Brian Cox ... will be together in every scene, playing off one another in a very tense situation, and I think everyone will relish the fireworks created by these two artists at the top of their game.”  So I'm guessing they play the kidnapper and the kidnappee -- wonder which is which?

Probably a scheduling conflict.  A production hangs fire long enough, some of the people who had been interested are going to move on to other things, so by the time things do get moving, they're not available.  I'm guessing that's why Freeman ended up not being in Funny Cow, as well.
