200 400 600 700 -- 1,000 members now!

Recommended Posts

Okay I know this is entirely random, but...

We now have over 200 members! I can't believe I missed the day we got our two hundredth! :(

Be proud, friends, be proud.

That's terrific news, Alice! Disregarding the two administrative accounts, it looks like member #200 is Brainy, who joined on July 23rd.

I might not be subscribed, but I do look. Getting to 200 members is great. If the admins and resident tech whizzes can confirm our 200th member then I think a congratulatory post should be made.

If my calculations are correct then our 200th member was @mrsverdantgreen

Discounting the two aforementioned Admin accounts the 200th would be @rema

Unless there's a big cash prize, this is fairly irrelevant, but I'm puzzled by your reply, and you're apparently puzzled by mine -- so I'll explain how I came up with Brainy:

First off, I assume that we're starting the count with 1 (even though we techie types do tend to start with 0). The Members List has 20 names per page, so 10 pages would list 200 members. Therefore, the 200th member would be the last entry on page 10 of the "Join Date" list, namely justafan. However, it seems unfair to count the two dummy admin accounts (not saying that the two admins are dummies!), so we need to go two members further along for the 200th actual person. That would be the 2nd entry on page 11, namely Brainy.

I had to count on my fingers to double-check, but I'm pretty sure that's right.

We have reached 216 members, but don't let that stop you bribing asking your friends to join, the more new members the merrier!

Aha!!! I finally see what accounts for this discrepancy!

I had calculated the number of listings by counting the number of listings on one page of the Member List and multiplying by the number of full pages, then adding the number of listings on the last page. I just noticed that this figure does NOT agree with the Total Members count at the bottom of the home page -- which is currently 229, even though the calculations show there are actually 234 total listings. That's a discrepancy of 5 -- exactly the same discrepancy as above!

The forum software is apparently counting neither the 3 Administrator accounts nor the 2 Moderator accounts. While I would agree that the dummy account "admin" should not be counted as a member, clearly the other two Administrators (Undead Medic and Banshee) are real members, as are both Moderators. On the other hand, the Detective category includes the other dummy account, "Admin Test Acct.," which should not be counted either.

So in order to determine the current number of actual member accounts, one could start with the home-page Total Members count, add the 3 Admins and 2 Mods, and subtract the two "dummy" accounts. In other words, add 3. So we're now up to 232 members, an increase of 32 in just the past month, roughly one new member per day!

(I love it when things finally make sense. :) )

Those who I associate with do not enjoy Sherlock, or TV for that matter, and I will never be able to convince them to read the stories. So I am at a standstill.

Please don't feel sad about not bringing in any additional members, SherLOCKED. If you did know any other Sherlock fans, you might never have joined this forum in the first place -- which would have been a great loss to us, because your enthusiasm more than makes up for there being only one of you!

Thanks for noticing that, SherLOCKED -- we're continuing to add roughly one new member per day, though most are not showing quite your degree of enthusiasm! Looks like one of the other staff members has already updated the title.

Hey, all you lurkers out there -- come on in and join the fun!

I noticed that (It saying 300 now)

I just don't understand what people do on here when they have no posts.

I am always the last to post in every forum I have ever been in.

As Sherlock would say "Dear God! What is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring!"

... I just don't understand what people do on here when they have no posts....

Some people join the forum and may even post something, but then never log in again (you can tell by the "last active" date on their profile page). Maybe they forget about the forum, or can't remember what it's called? (I'm just guessing.)

Others continue logging in, but without posting anything. This is apparently such a common phenomenon on most forums that there's a specific term for this sort of member, namely "lurker." That sounds sort of creepy, but I suspect that they're actually just kinda shy. They're interested in what we have to say, but it never occurs to them that we would likewise be interested (honestly!) in what they have to say.

So I repeat my greeting to the forum's faithful "lurkers" -- please share your thoughts with us! :welcome:

Hmm.. maybe you should promote this forum via Facebook, ask Sherlockology/other fansites whether you could share links etc.?

I like this forum very much, but I have to confess that a livelier discussion would definitely add to the fun.

More active users - more discussion. :)

Hmm, I believe we do have a Facebook page -- right, there's a Facebook "Like" button down at the bottom there. As for the rest, Undead Medic can tell you more about all that.

Welcome back, Brainy -- we've missed you! :wave2:

Oh as I've said in previous threads, I hate the fact we have over 300 members and only about 5 to 7 active posters! (People who post)

There are way too many lurkers!

Activity make a site more enjoyable!

Lots of those 300+ have posted at some point or other. The forum was very active until everyone seemed to go off on their late-August vacation at once, and September stayed slow, but then things started to pick up again in October. Not only are we still gaining new members (some of whom actually post!), but we're also glad to see several old members coming back (hooray!).

There have actually been over a dozen people posting recently. Some don't have the time to post very often, but it all adds to the mix. This forum is what we all make of it. So if some of you out there are waiting until other people increase the activity level -- just pick an interesting topic (or start a new one yourself) and jump right in!

Yes Carol.

I believe that inactivity was because of the end of the season of Sherlock. People are likely to be on now because of it coming back in a few short months/weeks!
