In our profiles you can have "friends."   What does this do?  Anything?  Or is it just like "hey, these folks seem cool."

As far as I am aware, it's exactly what you said, sort of like photos on your mantelpiece.  If I'm overlooking anything, I'm sure someone will soon let us know!

 

You can set up your profile to either approve any friend requests automatically, or else to notify you and allow you to make the decision -- I recommend the latter, simply so you'll be aware that the request was made (and can then deal with it as you see fit).

It must default to automatically approving, and I guess I never changed it because I have 1 friend and I have no clue who they are.  lol

Yeah, that happened to me as well (though I already knew her), which is how I found out what the default was.  I believe that some people use a friend request as a way of saying "I've read your posts and I think you're cool," which is a nice compliment.

 

Your conjecture is absolutely correct -- if you want to be asked, you need to change your default setting.
