Twitter

I finally succumbed and opened a Twitter account about four hours ago -- but I still haven't gotten the confirming email that they claim to have sent (several times).  Has anyone else had this problem?  Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I have tried reconfiguring my spam blocker all sorts of different ways, but I'm still not getting the email.  I thought maybe there was something wrong with their copy of the email address, but I tried "changing" to the same thing, and they said I couldn't switch to that one because it was already in use -- so that's not it either.

I don't recall having this sort of problem with other sites, though come to think of it, some confirming emails have taken their own sweet time showing up.  Does Twitter tend to be like that?

I'm Carol the Dabbler on there as well (user name, CarolTheDabbler).  They say my basic account has been set up, so I assume you will be able to see it.  Yes, please let me know.

Really!  That's odd, but apparently my current situation is even more tenuous than I assumed.  Thanks for checking, Bev!

Somewhere on Twitter, it did say I should wait a few days before panicking, so maybe their new-member software tends to get bogged down sometimes.

You show up on there Carol.  And I gave you your first follower.

Thanks, CAMPer -- apparently it just took a while.  Still no confirming email, though.  Rather than keep trying something new every few minutes, I've put my email settings on what seems most likely to let everything through (to either my inbox or my spam box), and I'll just leave it that way for a day or two and see if anything shows up.

Any hints, tips, or suggestions are still welcome!

CAMPer, I sent you a Direct Message via Twitter, just to see if I could -- and also to see whether I can receive a reply, so please do!  :D

I joined Twitter about 6 years ago so no tips on the confirmation email.  I even checked my email history to see if I might still have mine (I'm terrible at deleting emails so it was a strong possibility) but did not find it.  As for who to follow, I have a Sherlock list that has some stuff related to the show (& slightly heavy on the Benedict influence) plus you and Jenny.

You need to follow me so I can respond back or I won't be able to.

Oh I will look again after, then.

Incidentally can I just state now: sorry, but I physically cannot follow anybody!

You will see I am at my follow limit!

If anybody is mad enough to follow me, can I please point out that I retweet much atheist stuff.

EDIT: on yes I found you straight away this time...I obviously looked too soon before.

:wtf:  That's the craziest rule I ever heard, and it negates one major reason why I'm trying to set up a Twitter account.  There's no reason why anyone should follow me (I don't plan to tweet), and I don't plan to follow much of anybody (maybe a few Sherlock professionals, we'll see), but I was definitely interested in being able to send DM's.  Gnarrrff!

That does explain why I was able to DM you (you're following me), but not able to DM besleybean (she isn't).  I was assuming that the two of you simply had your preferences set up differently (because that's been my experience on Facebook).  Hmm, so if I want to DM somebody that I'm not currently in touch with, I would first need to send them an open tweet and ask them to follow me?  Could be awkward!

Yep. Twitter is awkward like that.

I have an account but I have not a clue on how to use it.

It was designed to converse with friends & family in 140 characters. What actually happens is we're connected with some in that category and then a bunch of celebrities who we retweet and occasionally tweet with regardless of any actual reply from them.

They say if I still don't get their confirming email in another day or so, I should set up an email address with Hotmail or Yahoo or Gmail -- just so they can email me!  (This is bordering on ridiculous, and I haven't even really tried to use my account yet!)

Tell ya what I'm gonna do if that doesn't work....  :comp:

I finally got the confirmation email -- and didn't even have to set up a new email address.  The message was illegible, but I moved the cursor around looking for links, and finally found the one I needed.  Hooray!

Of course, this makes me a little uncertain that future emails will reach me any more reliably.    But at least it's a start.

OK, I have another question already.  Isn't "following" someone supposed to make it easy to see their tweets?     If so, what do I need to do in order to see them (instead of a whole assortment of stuff that Twitter thinks I "ought" to like)?  Last night I set up my account to follow four people (Amanda Abbington, Mark Gatiss, Sue Vertue, and Sherlockology), and a couple of them even have new tweets since then, but I can't seem to find their tweets except by actually going to their page -- which I could do even before I joined.

The day you tried to start it may have been the day they were having so many Twitter issues.  My account as well as many others I knew all locked up for a few hours... If you happened to try to start an account during that time, it likely wouldn't have worked.

Use Twitter as a listening device.  Follow only the things that interest you.  Some people make the mistake of following anyone and everyone just hoping those people will follow back, but it's not a numbers game, and if you do that, your Twitter feed will be full of stuff you don't want to have to sort through.

Also check your spam folder for confirmation.

Sometimes the best thing is to follow the people who retweet anything and everything regarding Ben, Sherlock, anything Sherlock related.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm having no particular problem figuring out who to follow.  My question is, once I've clicked "follow," then where are their tweets supposed to show up for me -- is there some page of my account where I can see all the recent tweets from everyone that I'm following?  (And if not, then I may have missed the entire point of "following.")

Well, there's your page, and then there is your Twitter lead page.  Theoretically anyone you follow should show up in your Twitter lead.  I follow Amanda too, but I rarely see her posts.  But I have thousands of tweets going by daily.  I don't have time to look.  I just go directly to her page.  If you've only got a few people you're following, then it should show up.  But I'm not a Twitter master.  Someone else on the forum is probably better at it than me.
