Board themes

Hi, Mods

I have a tiny little request if it doesn't make much work. I am using the IP. Board theme, because it is much easier to read for me. But still there is the picture of Sherlock on the top of the page, staring at me. Personally I don't have anything against Sherlock staring, but I also use to visit the board (briefly) at work, and those eyes are surely draw attention of people who better shouldn't know what I am looking at.

Maybe some other users have the same problem?

One other boards I visit has a special "stealth version" with fully neutral header:

Could we have something similar? I could provide some stealth header pic.

I am constantly bemused that people visit fan sites while at work.

Hope my taxes are't subsidising this!

I have installed a new theme, which cunningly disguises the forum to look reminiscent of a certain well known search engine. It is available in the themes menu as "Safe For Work"

Is that any good for you?

Well, it is my version of coffee or cigarette break. And short version: not your taxes. :P

"Reminiscent," the man says!  :P

Well, hey, if a certain well-known search engine doesn't mind the ultimate compliment, who am I to quibble?

P.S.: That acronym would be considered pretty awful by a lot of Americans -- since DOA is the usual abbreviation for "Dead on Arrival" (i.e., someone who died before the ambulance could reach the hospital).  Looks to be an American site though, considering how they show the globe.  Odd and creepy!

Oh -- I get it now -- it's actually "Den of Angels"!  Very stealthy!

I know. Well, the topic of the board are dolls - they are dead when they arrive, don't they. :)

I always thought about the car brand KIA (killing in action) being quite morbid - but as I asked an American friend, he said he never thought about the name this way.

Me either -- till now!  ;)

When I first saw Kia, killed in action crossed my mind. But to a Korean, that thought may not have crossed their mind.

That sort of cross-cultural faux pas may be fairly common, even with careful market research.

For example, I've heard that the AMC / Dodge Matador did not sell well in Mexico.  Here in the US, the word means "bullfighter," but the Mexican word for bullfighter is actually torero, and the literal Spanish translation of Matador is "Killer" -- not quite what most people would want in a car.  Likewise I've heard that the Chevy Nova didn't sell well there either -- though this may be more of a joke -- because as two words, "no va" means "it doesn't go."

Mitsubishi once gave a whole new meaning to their slogan Innovation in Motion by naming one of their cars Pajero <_<.

Why is it that the people who vet the script for a weekly television episode seem to do a more thorough job than the people who vet the names for a whole new automobile?  Wouldn't ya think?
