Forum Emoties vs. iPhone Emoties

Consider me personally offended.

Ha Ha.

Language and linguistics are wonderful subjects in general.

But I will defend my native tongue to the hilt...

It can express anything you want, if used correctly...just most of the native speakers don't speak it properly!

I change how I speak all the time, such is the richness, depth and nuance of the English language.

Punctuation also helps.

I do accept certainly humour doesn't always transfer well via the internet...so emoticons are then fun!

Dear Carol and besleybean, as I tried to explain above, when I input all the slashes and whatnots of the forum emoticons, they remain just that, they do not transform into slow-burning grenades, or smiley faces, or Arcadia's soap box!

By the way, Caya actually mentioned the discussion I have not yet seen about the German version of SoT, which had an incredibly funny moment that may spark another round of controversy over Sherlock's sexual orientation, when during the Bainbridge crisis Dr Watson calls him "Schwester" for "nurse"!

I am definitely responding to points raised, I am certainly not writing letters, but it's an ingrained habit. I even text my cousin in Cuxhaven with "Liebe Mayra" , otherwise it would sound incredibly intrusive. The rest of the Europen contingent might understand. Do we actually have a native French person in the forum? Their social customs are even more stylised when it comes to texting and posting. OK, if I have to, I can post a "Hallo" but only to my family, nearest and dearest. Go figure!

OK then, could you try posting a few of those here, so we can see?  That might give me some kind of clue.

I'm apparently missing your point, but that sounds like a simple translation of the original English line.  Are you referring to grammatical gender?

 

Added:  Oh, I see now -- Schwester is a cognate of "sister," and refers to a female nurse, whereas a male nurse might be Pfleger -- though that apparently also means an orderly.

 

I know a man who does not like to be called a "male nurse," because that term often refers to a sort of glorified orderly who can perform tasks that a male patient might be embarrassed by having a female nurse perform.  So my friend prefers to be called a registered nurse, because that's what he is.  I wonder if German men who are nurses have to deal with a similar ambiguity?

We all have our habits, don't we?  I can't offhand think what mine are, because they seem so normal to me, but I'm sure my friends and family could supply a long list!  That's fine then -- surely no one objects to being called "dear," especially now that we know why.

They do, and tackle it in different ways, from what I've seen. My friend Martin introduces himself as "Pfleger Martin" (male nurse Martin) to patients (hospital employees are usually referred to with rank and name, and nurses tend to use their given name while doctors use their surname, so it's "Doktor Kantner" but "Schwester Birgit", most of the time), while I've seen others use introductions like, "Hallo, ich bin Schwester Thomas" (hello, I'm Sister Thomas) - and he's married and has a beautiful four-year old daughter, so it's safe to assume he didn't mean that kind of Sister.

 

Calling themselves Pfleger or Diplompfleger (denoting a fully-trained nurse) is more commmon from what I've seen, though, but Schwester is not unheard of - but I'd not recommend using the term to address a male nurse unless he used it himself first ;).

Aaaand we're back on topic! To turn words into emotes, Inge, you need to ditch the spaces between the colons and the word sandwiched in between them. Carol only wrote them with spaces in between in order for the forum not to turn them into an emoticon, so one could see what to type. So it's ;rolleyes; only with : .

 

eta: not only the space behind the "magic" word, but also in front. Colon-word-colon without pause.

One more question:  Inge, are you able to use the emotie toolbar on the editor?  Some people find that easier than typing in the codes.

 

In case you haven't yet discovered it, just click on the yellow smiley face in the top row of the editor toolbar, and the smiley toolbar will appear just below the Reply box.  You can scroll through the entire collection by clicking the right and left arrows at the ends of the smiley toolbar, or you can bring up the whole list in a little window by clicking Show All just below the smiley toolbar (though I can't swear that the latter option is available on a Mac).

 

To use either, just position the cursor where you want the emotie to be in your post, and click on the desired smiley in the toolbar or list.

Sorry, Inge -- I was talking about the Reply box (also known as the editor, though it's not labeled that way).  So the quote below refers equally to either the Reply box at the bottom of the topic/thread page or the Reply box on the More Reply Options page:
