Hello!

I'm wondering what people are predicting for the baby? I just can't imagine the series with a baby in it, seems too out of character for the show, and I really don't want it to turn into one of those shows where the baby keeps getting threatened or kidnapped. Also, as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong ;) ) John doesn't have kids in canon, do you think they'll make such a big change?

Do you think the baby will die? The baby isn't John's? Or will Mary have the baby and it'll just be an aside that we know John has a child but we never really see them?

I'm really interested in everyone's opinions!

Yeah, that's a tough one. My personal preference would be for the last scenario ... I'd like there to be as little drama surrounding it as possible.

As far as I know it's not canon, but if you're doing a modern update of something, it does make sense for a modern man to have a family. And it could add another dimension to John's character and his relationship with Sherlock. If they remain focused on that central relationship (and they seem to be), I think anything they do with other characters could work out. But as far as predicting what they'll do ... I wouldn't dare! I'm bound to embarrass myself! :d

Two scenarios:

- Baby would die before it was born (with Mary) or Mary would leave.

- Baby will be safe and appears only once in a while. (But I don't think this scenario is likely)

Some possible scenarios with baby:

- Sherlock spends three days without eating and sleeping in Bart and finds a super formula that has all the vitamins and nutrients, much better than every other formula in the market, with Molly's help, who would of course, be smitten again.

- Sherlock kidnaps the baby every time John is being annoying. He introduces some of his boltholes to her.

- She makes a much better Billy-the-Skull stand-in compared to her father.

- Someone tries to steal candy from the baby, and Sherlock throws him out of second story window.

- Sherlock babysits, the baby whines and cries, Sherlock just stands there and tries to talk reason with her.

- Sherlock spends full day for events like birthday or weekend with the family, after that disappears for a month recovering from social overload.

- Sherlock buys mini Belstaff coat, completed with scarf (but not deer stalker) and John is not allowed to protest.

- Sherlock demands the baby speaks Serbian before she is 4.

- Sherlock, Archie and the baby play Cluedo together. Sherlock's rules still apply to all.

- Sherlock holds the crying and screaming baby next to Mycroft's ear to kick him out of flat instead of playing scratchy violin.

Ha! That's the thing though, any scenario involving Sherlock and a baby seems like fanfic territory, I just can't get my head around it in the show - too weird!

I've said before somewhere on here what I wouldn't mind seeing (or half expect to see) which I will try to recall off the top of my head.

Sherlock is handed the baby to hold for a bit.  He then passes her back to one of the parents (probably John) saying that she will need a diaper change and food several moments before she starts crying.  John would beg to differ until the baby starts crying and have some response of "How did you know? Oh never mind." as he gets up to take care of his daughter.

Well, Moftiss does keep saying it's a fanfic!

I think they could get one good laugh out of it (Sherlock retreating in horror when John offers to let him hold the baby?) but that's about it. I really can't get my head around it either, so I just sort of take it on faith they'll make it work.

I did that with my nephew, no necessary when I was holding them, when I actually stood further away than the parent. Nothing scientific, nothing funky, I just have too sensitive nose. (It's not always rosy, in fact, it's hardly rosy)

Too bad I was given a honorary title as Soiled Diaper Detector by my brother. Hm...maybe that equivalent with knighthood offered to Sherlock by Mycroft? :D

True, which I actually love, because fanworks always get ridiculed in the media, so it's good to have someone sticking up for it!

I know they always said they didn't want to add any original characters (except Molly who snuck into everyone's hearts), surely baby Watson would be considered an original character, it's a pretty huge shift in dynamics if they do keep her in.

Well, that's another thing, they've said they want to keep shaking things up to keep Ben and Martin interested .... Maybe they're interested in babies? :d (Well, we know Ben is!)

I keep thinking they'll name her Gloria Scott, and then claim it's canon.....

Well, over at fanfiction world, there's at least one Wilhelmina Watson, a name which holds a particular significance for all German/Austrohungarian members of this forum, without the American contingent being aware of the weighty problem. Even TOBY recoiled at that name! But if they go down the path of ACD material, there will never be a Baby Watson, much as I like helping both sfmpco and SherlockedCamper bring her up.

However, Ms Ava Watson fills the bill perfectly, in keeping with TJLC, ma petite Aurelie: look out for KeelieThompson1 and Lionessinthedark. (Mind the tags)

What do you think of the likelihood the baby isn't John's? Seems to be a fic favourite, and we were introduced to one of Mary's ex boyfriends after all. Seems a bit too neat to me unfortunately.

That just doesn't seem to me like the kind of thing they'd do on this show, somehow. It's too ... soap-opera?

To someone like me who's not overly familiar with ACD canon and doesn't really care anyway ... :p ... it would seem even stranger if a modern version of John didn't have a wife and child. After all, he's supposed to be the "ordinary" one!

Yea, it is a bit too soap opera-ish. I just really hate the idea of there being a baby in the show. I haven't read many of the books, but I've never liked Mary showing up in any of the dramatisations because she always seems to detract from the dynamic of Sherlock and John which to me is what the entire thing is about. The idea of Mary and a baby is even more extreme, and all I can imagine (even though I know they would never let it devolve into this) is Sherlock and John running about solving crime with John wearing a baby sling like some God awful sitcom.   :wtf:

I really don't think it will be that hard to keep the baby out of the show. After all, in real life, babies are born all the time but it doesn't keep their parents from going out and fighting fires or chasing criminals or doing research or killing people. :p I think it will be fine. Plus I want to see how Sherlock reacts to an infant. :d

In the series, that is hardly likely, but in flights of fancy we have our own Sheralyn (after sfmpco's fictional infant ) in two threads already.

What would happen if they let Peter Jackson do some baby scenes....?

(not very much like Sherlock probably, but entertaining....and who knows? )

Oh, my ears and whiskers! Cathy@Phoenixcasting tweeted that they need a newborn baby in Cardiff for filming on the 7th of April for a popular drama! Is Phoenixcasting at all connected with Hartswood? Because then we are at the deep end! If there is any deity listening, please, please, please, let them NOT transform the series into a sitcom, PLEASE!

Inge, I am so glad you said that! I was starting to think I was the only person scared it would get a bit sitcom-y. The only thing giving me faith it won't at the moment is Moffat talking about it being devastating.
