Hello everybody,

I'm a 31 year old woman from the netherlands.

I don't just like the series "sherlock" though, I also read some of the books and I also like the movies with RDJ in it.

I haven't seen much else of SH, even though there are plenty of movies and television series about him.

What re-sparked my interest was starting to read "the return of sherlock holmes" a week or so ago, which I picked up as a second hand book on holiday in england last year.

I read some of the other stories a looooong time ago, probably out of order too. Dutch translations I suspect.

Rewatching "sherlock" is something I am seriously considering.

I just took a look at the 1984 tv series "the adventures of sherlock holmes" which was the reason I went out to find a sherlock forum.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

We have a lot of fans of the Granada series round here, so dive right in. Not sure if we have a RDJ movies thread, but feel free to start one!

Welkom!

Het is goed nederlands spreeken!

It would probably be a little bit rude if I spoke anything but english here.

It seems your dutch is a bit rusty, where are you from?

I am actually from Brazil, but I am currently living in Belgium and still learning dutch!

The (trial) message in dutch was just a warm welcome. Indeed the best would be to keep it in english so everybody can take part in the discussions.

The dutch language can be confusing, I'm glad I grew up with it because learning it from scratch as a teenager or adult doesn't sound easy to me.

Good luck, you can message me if you're having trouble with the language and need advice. There might be some memory aids that can make things easier.

Welcome!

We don't live too far if you're from Netherlands.

German?

I live in the province "north Brabant", it's the middle south province bordering on belgium. We get a lot of belgian cultural influence here, but almost no german influence in contrast.

Ever been to the netherlands?

German.

I live near Dortmund.

And yes I've been to the Netherlands.

Is there even a country with Germany having influenced it?

The US?

There are a lot of people of german descent there. Lots of food originating from germany as well.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, sauerkraut etc.

They also do octoberfest.

Did germany have any colonies at some point?

Don't forget the spelling issues! Even Dutch speaking members have trouble with it!

Glad to hear that English isn't the only language with "creative" spelling!  :D

Dutch spelling is like a minefield, lots of words have more than one correct spelling and you have to keep up to date by reading the "green booklet" which is a spelling guide released every so often.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_list_of_the_Dutch_language

The thing is that some people really care about using the up to date versions, they get up in arms if someone uses the old spelling and will probably brand the user of the old spelling as a "low class" person.

This isn't about people who don't know how to spell things and get them wrong, it's about changing the official spelling.

It makes me wonder why the spelling needs to be changed in the first place. Pannekoek or Pannenkoek (2 spellings for "pancake"), cadeau or kado (2 spellings for "gift"), it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Everyone who reads dutch knows what they mean, and using either of the spellings does not make you more or less civilised.

If there is a real problem with people getting the dutch language wrong it's teenagers who are so exposed to street language/slang that their official dutch language skills suffer as a result.

Ah, I'm getting old.
