Thanks for the picture proof, Artemis!

I'm seeing the same on my computer (Firefox), but curiously enough there is no watermark in sight on the mobile (Chrome).

Ohh, that must be the difference.  I've been on my laptop (also Firefox).  Checked on mobile (Safari), don't see the watermark.  Thanks for figuring that out!

Still weird, why would a browser make the difference? Anyway, I'm using ... uh, whatever Microsoft is calling their browser these days. Edge?

Also, just for the record, I've never had anything to do with Photobucket either.

Interesting!  I guess if I have any trouble downloading my pictures by using their website, I can presumably switch to Edge (which I have on my computer, though I haven't really used it) and revert to this method after all:

I plan to go through the forum looking for photos I've posted (this is about the only place I've done so), and when I find one, do a right click and Save As to a new "forum photos" folder on my computer (naming them according to the thread & page they belong on).

So please don't tell them that their watermarks don't work on Edge -- at least not yet!

Alternatively, you can copy/paste the image location of the picture in a new tab (or drag it to a new tab, as I described in the Cover Photo thread).  It appears without the watermark there when I do it, regardless what browser I'm using.

One issue I'm encountering with this method is that the image wants to save as a .webp file, which I do not like.  Are you able to get around that?

Not so far, but I've only tried it once (on Firefox), just to see if the watermark survived the process (it did).

Right now I'm on my tablet, and can testify that the watermarks don't show up on Silk either.

Yes, if you save the photo directly from wherever it's posted, it still has the watermark.  The only way I could get the watermark to disappear was by opening the photo by itself in a new tab, and then it saved without it.

Edge and Chrome both tend to bog down my (rather old) computer, so I'm kinda forced to use Firefox for the time being.  But I like Firefox in most respects and I've already downloaded my photos, so it's okay for me.

Just an FYI, if you decide to attempt a download, let your computer sit for awhile while the wheel spins.  It took 30 or 40 minutes after I pressed "download" to finish doing anything, I wasn't sure if it was even working.  I have a lot more photos than you, so yours probably won't take as long, but do give it some time before giving up.

So it does!  :applause:   Apparently as a WEBP image, like you said.  (I'd never even heard of those before.)  But while the image was displayed on that other tab, I got a pop-up, an ad I think, offering to convert it to a different extension.  I'm not brave / foolish enough to click on anything like that, but apparently such apps do exist.

Oh, you mean that PB's mass auto-download is actually working!  (I guess that explains how you were able to do thousands of photos without going crazy.)  Does it preserve your original image type?  Thanks for that info as well.  Sounds like I have a number of options.

.webp is a relatively new format, I think by Google. Anyway, I just checked and it's one of those accepted by imgur, so you won't need to convert anything to upload pics there. Otherwise, I bet GIMP understands it as well (I've yet to see an image format that it can't work with) if you do want to convert them.

Next question would be, does this forum accept it?  And/or other forums?  It'd probably be safest to stick with jpg if possible, but....

Yes it does.  I don’t think I would ever have downloaded 6,000 images from Photobucket individually, lol.  I’d have to wait for all those ads to load every time, and... ugh.

I don’t like .webp personally because, not only do the files take up more space, but when I want to view one I have saved on my computer, it opens in a web browser instead of a traditional photo viewer.  This is cumbersome and time-consuming, especially if I want to quickly page through images, and it also causes my computer to lag (opening/loading and closing a browser over and over again will do that, especially if it’s Chrome).  I find it incredibly frustrating.

Many websites are now turning to the .webp format for their hosted images.  Tumblr, for instance, is almost exclusively using .webp as the default for their GIFs.  But linking is different.  For example, when I link a Tumblr GIF to a post on this forum, the address extension usually appears as .gifv (which, for now, I can change to a .gif by simply removing the ‘v’).  This will save as a .webp.  So linking works the same either way, but if I want to save a .gifv image to my computer, it saves as a .webp.  Yesterday I came across a .jpg that saved as a .webp.  So all that to say, if all you want to do is link to the forum from another website, it’s fine, because the link address maintains the file extensions we are used to.  If you wanted to save the images, you might find that what you thought was a .jpg will only save as a .webp (always an unpleasant surprise, for me).  I’ve not attempted to upload and directly insert a photo with a .webp extension, so I’m not sure how/if that will work.  I have my doubts.

If you still need more, I use Chrome on both laptop and Android Phone and see no watermark. I don't have Photobucket subscription, I do have account but hasn't been active since year 2004, and definitely has forgotten the password/never use them on current device.

Is that like those .jfif 's ?  I've been running into a few of those lately, I seem to remember they convert to jpg's easily enough even though my version of Photoshop is ancient. They just started appearing a few weeks ago.

Haven't seen one of those yet.

I'll keep an eye out for another one and try to note what it's like. But I seem to remember they opened in the browser, too. Which I also dislike.

And I don't remember running across a .webp, so I wonder if it's something to do with the device or browser you use. *sigh* it's so tiring keeping up with technology.....

When you get a chance, try saving this picture on your computer (first one that popped up on my Tumblr page): https://66.media.tumblr.com/c894cabf6fb9252ba638b96db113dbde/tumblr_oof6o1tQZU1rrkahjo1_500.gifv

Does it save as a .webp?

Yeah, it does, and it opens in my browser. And I can't edit it. Although the ones I saw before were not moving images, I don't think I can edit one of those anyway.

I notice in the link it's a .gifv  ... do you see the same? Another oddity.

Yep, that's what I was talking about right here:

But yeah, I have seen non-moving images of various extensions that will only save as .webp too.  Frustrating.  Not a fan of this trend.

Speaking of annoying trends, Tumblr recently "updated" their website to endless scrolling, and removed the option to turn it off.  I hate, hate, HATE endless scrolling.

HATE.

I also hate that websites are sorting posts by "top posts" (a.k.a. whatever their algorithm decides you'll want to see) instead of "newest".  At least leave me the option to opt out!  Why can't they do that?  Why do they have to "improve" it and also take away my choice to customize to my personal liking?

Thank goodness some sites have better manners.  I just signed up with something (Imgur?) where the settings page does give me the "newest" option, as well as a handful of others (which I don't recall, because I just about always prefer newest).

And by the way, I'm probably misinterpreting what you said, but I don't think "top posts" makes any attempt to cater to the individual member's preferences, it merely ranks the most popular posts overall.  Bleh.

Yes and no, it depends on the algorithm they use.  Facebook, for instance, will sort your newsfeed by “top posts” by default, but what they show you is based on what you’ve liked and interacted with the most, most recently.  Twitter also sorts by “top posts”, but their algorithm is based on overall popularity.  So it depends.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it only took 'em two weeks to remember to tell me (via email) that "Your Account No Longer Includes Hosting" -- two weeks after they started watermarking my hotlinked photos, that is.  And note that the payment I made last year (which was to include hosting) doesn't run out for over a month yet.  Now they're wanting me to pay $72 per year in order to get my pictures fully visible again.  And I say fool me once....

I decided to give that a try, but I don't offhand see how to access the download function (only how to upload!).  Could you point me in the right direction?  And do I need to be in my "bucket" or in a specific album?  (Most, perhaps all, of my photos are in the same album.)

You can download albums individually, or you can download your entire bucket at once.

First, highlight the albums you want to download by clicking on them (the boxes with icons of your photos in them).  They should outline in blue.  Then, once they are selected, click on the "download" arrow in the middle of the toolbar.

It'll spin for awhile after that while it prepares your photos.

Here's a help link in case you need some more direction.  Hope that helps!
