Interesting quotations (on any subject)

Recommended Posts

It's from chapter 3 of 'The Lord of the Rings'.  I don't remember hearing it in the Hobbit movies (not that it wasn't there), but Bilbo never said it in the books.  It's Frodo's quote.  There's no indication that Frodo heard it from Bilbo (though one can reasonably assume as much, because who else, besides perhaps Gandalf?), nor any indication as to where Bilbo may have heard it.  Peter Jackson likes to say things.

In any case!  The most interesting part of the quote to me is the last bit: "Advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill."  As a kid reading the books for the first time this had a surprising impact on me.  In my circles I've always been the go-to advisor, even from a young age, and this one quote made me rethink my approach to 'counseling'.

Yes, looked at from that perspective, giving advice is a huge responsibility.  Even if it's taken in the way that you meant it, which it may not be.  Though I do try to say "here's how I do it" or "you might consider doing it this way" rather than "do it this way" or "I think you should do it this way."

Oh, I don't know that he ever claimed that Frodo heard it from Bilbo.  He just had Bilbo saying it.  But in both the book and the movie it's presented as something of an old saying, so who knows where it originated?  (And who can argue with it?)
