I think a gun shot to the head would be a bit much to fake. Bear in mind that this Moriarty is completely nuts, and the thing he wanted most was to beat Sherlock. To suprise him with how simple the solution could be. So instead of letting Sherlock get the code to call off the assassins, he 'simply' kills himself. Problem solved, now Sherlock will just have to die.
