The Language (and travel) Thread
Liselle replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Miscellaneous Musings
Not really. Younger people (and, for some reason, usually girls) might say "frickin'" or "fecking", but it's not very common, and 'fecking' is more of an Irish word. As an equivalent for 'freakin'", 'bloody' comes pretty close. Or, if you wanted to be more polite, 'bloomin'". But 'bloomin'" is said more by women, too, and more likely older women. Not odd at all; that's exactly what we would say "He's a nice bloke" is fine. It would still infer that the man is a very masculine person, but it's not derogatory in any way. Not that I know of Dialects in Britain just tend to be called by their nicknames, so the Liverpool accent is Scouse, the Newcastle accent is Geordie, the Birmingham accent is Brummie, etc. -

Yes, 'bloke' means a man. I suppose it does have certain connotations; a bloke is generally understood to be the typical English man; somebody who enjoys going to the pub for a few beers and watching the football with his mates I would say a bloke is a very manly man, if you know what I mean. It's a slang term, so upper class people wouldn't really use it, but I think it's used by everyone else pretty much across the whole country; I don't think it has any geographical usage in particular. I wasn't aware that Americans used 'balls'; I thought that was an entirely British thing. But yes, 'bollocks' is used in exactly the same way. It's also used as an exclamation when something's gone wrong, for example. -

Just thought I'd drop in here and say if anyone has any queries regarding French or Spanish, I'm happy to help! I have a degree in French and Spanish. I also speak little bits of Italian, Finnish and German (though I've forgotten most of my German, unfortunately ) And, of course, I'm English, so if any of you American people have any questions about British English, I'm your girl -
Yay, well done! And just as I'm about to go to bed now, as well; perfect timing! Night night everyone xxx

Hmmm... I hope this one hasn't already been done; I don't fancy reading through 49 pages of this thread just to find out! _ _ / _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _. _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ ' _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. _ _ _/ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _. Well I guessed one of the words had to be engine, and then I could only remember one quote which had the word 'engine' in it, and it was that one
-
Oh my gosh, I hate having to keep spoilers from people; it's so hard! I'm currently in that situation with my friends; we all love Game of Thrones, but I'm the only one who's read all the books and knows exactly what happens, and it's so hard not to let something slip. Wow; if I wasn't lucky, and the show wasn't in English, I couldn't wait another five months for the dubbed version. I could probably learn the basics of the language it was in by then!
-
Your mind, it's so placid, straight-forward, barely used. Mine's like an engine, racing out of control. A rocket, tearing itself to pieces, trapped on the launch pad. I need a case!
-
Yeah, my Dad likes it and will probably watch it with me, but I doubt he's going to squeal and jump up and down in his seat the minute Benedict appears on the screen... and if he did, I'd start to worry about him
-
A?
-
I dread to think what I'm going to be like on the day it finally airs If anyone DARES interrupt me whilst it's on, I shall never speak to them again.
-
Oh good! I was worried for a second there; thought you were all missing out on the one and only bit of juicy series 3 footage there is
-
Just thought I'd check something, because I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere on the forum yet... Erm... you are all aware of the teaser trailer, right?
-
Well it's listed on IMDB as being October 31st, and I've seen that date mentioned a lot elsewhere. But like I say, nothing's been confirmed by the actual people working on the show yet.
-
Well I know it's widely thought in the UK that the air date will be October 31st, but it hasn't been confirmed. I'm really hoping it will be though! I literally can't wait any longer!
-
Yeah, I agree with you all; I think he would have opened it. I was just wondering what your thoughts were. I like the idea of whatever it was being used in later episodes; I'm presuming Molly and Sherlock will be spending more time together considering she's the only one who knows he's alive, so maybe they'll mention it at some point. God, words can't describe how much I'm looking forward to the next series. Roll on October!!
-
Thanks! It's one of the ones that somebody made and posted here for people to use; I'm terribly sorry but I don't remember who made it I love it though, so thank you very much to whoever did
-
You've got three hands there, Carol
-
Louise Brealey said something similar in an interview; I think she said it was a red mankini. I'm fairly certain she was joking Hahahaha; good to know I'm not the only one who ships Sherlock and Molly! I like your idea too, Julia Mae; I just can't help but feel that, knowing how much Molly adores Sherlock and wants him to see that, it would be something more personal; something soppy a girlfriend might buy a boyfriend. Like a teddy bear that says 'I love you' on it or something Do we think Sherlock ever actually opened it, or was he too busy with the whole Irene situation? Or, even if he wasn't too busy with that, would he have cared enough to open it anyway?
-
Awww, I like that idea
-
Wasn't really sure where to put this, so hopefully I'm in the right place What are your thoughts on what Molly's present for Sherlock in 'A Scandal in Belgravia' might have been? I would have loved to have known what it was My current favourite theory is that it was a pipe Or maybe another skull... though the box isn't really skull-shaped. Hmm...
