Filming may have yet to even begin on the third episode of Sherlock Series Three, but that’s not stopping Amazon UK from setting live their pre-orders for the eagerly series on DVD and Blu Ray already.

It is important to note that the home video release of either format has no set date for arrival as yet, as the UK airdate for Sherlock Series Three is still yet to be announced. Despite this, the pre-order links are sound - you can pre-order now and Amazon UK will debit your purchase whenever the series is released.

The cover art used for both formats is also temporary, and is put together from press material from Series Two.

Please note as well the DVD will be encoded in Region 2 [uK, Europe] and while the Blu Ray will likely be region free it will be subject to 1080i 50hz encoding, which renders the disc unplayable on NTSC based players from Panasonic and Sony, including the Playstation 3, in regions including the United States. We recommend checking your player manual or checking you player model on Google for compatibility before ordering.

Sherlockology will of course bring further news on the eventual release of Sherlock Series Three on DVD and Blu Ray as it becomes available.

 

Note:  Some of you Americans may be thinking that you'd rather order the Region 1 DVD from Amazon's US web site, and that's an option.  But it won't be available until PBS has aired the new series, and unless they do that a lot quicker than they did with the first two series, you can have the Region 2 DVD in hand months before they even begin airing their abbreviated version.  You'll need a region-free DVD player, of course, but you may have one already on your laptop (just check to be sure it doesn't limit the number of times you can switch regions).  Or you can order a region-free player for your television.  Once the Region 1 DVD is available, though, its content is virtually identical to the Region 2 (the missing eight minutes have been put back into each episode).

Note that PBS has confirmed that it will not air Sherlock Season 3 before 2014: http://www.hypable.com/2013/07/03/sherlock-series-3-us-air-premiere-date/, so it was an easy decision to preorder the Series 3 DVD from Amazon UK.

That link doesn't seem to work for me, but Entertainment Weekly's article on the Comic Con panel says, "We can also confirm that season three of Sherlock will indeed run in the U.S. on PBS in 2014."

 

Of course, there's no guarantee that the BBC will air it before January, either.
