  1. Have you not seen it before? We often see them over here...maybe cos our scale is a bit smaller!
  2. No offence taken and the point with Spring is that in English, there isn't an alternative. Whereas Auumn is the perfect name for the one thing and nothing else.
  3. Sorry to reply to myself, but I thought on Twitter, Amanda said it better than me: It’s called Autumn. Fall is something you do when you lean too far out of a window. #quintessentiallyenglish
  4. Your latter point is true and of course athletes train all over the world, to gain the use of the best resources.
  5. I wouldn't be quite so sure of yourself, my Trans Atlantic friend. The situation on The Emerald Isle is complicated to say the least. In the past it was entirely driven by religion, not so much these days. The RC Church in Ireland, has very largely lost credibility. As far as I am aware, Irish people can still vote in UK elections. I have just checked and of course I am correct on one point at least: Northern Irish athletes CHOOSE which nation they wish to represent. Might be fair, seeing as some don't want the border in the first place!
  6. So many questions! Let's just deal with what we have now, shall we? Republic of Ireland clearly has it's own arrangements. I don't know, but assume, those in Northern Ireland get to choose which team they represent. I honestly think they just chose the name 'Team GB ' to be snappy.
  7. The Olympic Team name always causes a big row.
  8. Oh we have bigger issues to worry about, at the moment... We're onto our third PM in 10 months.
  9. Oh no I am talking about a completely different beast! I was referring to knee highs. So only nylon and defo not for winter. Heck I wear thermal socks in winter!
  10. Yep, we have all of those... Pop sox was possibly a brand name.
  11. Yes, I meant to say that I assume that's where the term nylons originated... then again, you get pop socks/knee highs.
  12. I remember when you used to get actual pants...with tights attached! But now they are just one garment and certainly not the same as knickers! Stockings of course came first and and there are two separate parts to the garment... of course stockings was what we used to call socks.
  13. Pantyhose is such a funny word....I think it actually says that name on the packets.
  14. I think we do tend to say ladder for tights... I think we used to say 'click' for the little pulls in them... 'Run' also has a series of issues!
  15. You mean as in the structure and the run in tights? No, becuae there isn't an alternative for 'ladder'...unless they are a 'step ladder' of course!
  16. Well no, because Autumn can't mean much else. Whereas Fall: a trip, a fall from grace, how a coin toss fell, 'it fell upon me'... all those kind of things. Autumn can be descriptive, but it generally just refers to the season.
  17. We are gradually accepting more Americansisms! Some I am happy with, others not so. Certainly American spelling is much more logical. I like terms like 'faucet', because they are more specific and I like my language to be exact! However by the same token: although 'Fall' is beautifully poetic. 'Autumn' is more precise.
  18. I give lessons in this stuff... and usually to Brits!
  19. We are actually the UK.
  20. Well, we're not Russia.... just run by Tory idiots! General Election soon, I hope.
  21. London on the Jubilee line, so definitely not cheap!
  22. Again, just a small point... Una wasn't dead in 2017!
  23. Thank you for some of that information. My only quibble would be to say that Sherlock mainly ended because of everyone becoming busy with other projects. There was plenty more material to work with and I trust Gatiss and Moffat implicitly. However, the time is now over... If they couldn't manage a special for Una, it is not going to happen...
  24. On the latter point... don't think that is ever going to be an issue.
  25. Can't remember if I posted about this before, or where I put it, if I did. I was all positive then: cafe still open, seemed to have changed hands, though some of the staff still there and all of the Sherlock photos. However, I have just had a return visit: I was suprised to see Chris, the original manager/owner there. So when he brought my coffee over, I expresed this to him. It was almost one of those, wish I hadn't asked moments, but I did feel sorry for him: he poured his heart out- he is desperate to sell, but cannot find a buyer. He is losing money and having to work extra hours, just to keep his head above water. So it would have been a tad insensitive to ask about the Sherlock memorabilia...should he sell.
