BBC1 will be rerunning Sherlock series 2 over the next few weeks (would have started tonight, except Wimbledon bumped it to next week).  According to several sources, the name of episode 3 will be hidden within these 3 episodes.  "The Title is in the Title" was the phrase they used.  I lost the page, but it was on Sherlockology and Radio Times.  This won't be on any dvd, blu-ray or old version of the show...only the ones that will rerun.

Oh, thanks, bborchar!  A quick Google turned up the Radio Times article, posted yesterday:

Sherlock fans, have your deerstalker hat and pipe at the ready - it's time to play detective. While the BBC have previously announced titles of the first two episodes of Sherlock series three, you're going to have to work a little hard to uncover the name of the final instalment.

The third episode - which will follow on from The Empty Hearse and The Sign of Three - is due to begin filming this summer after a recess for cast and crew and has so far been shrouded in mystery. But not for much longer...

Series two of the popular detective drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman begins its repeats on BBC1 at 8:30pm tonight and fans keen for a spot of detective work should keep a close eye out for a clue to the third and final title of the new series. One word of the episode name is hidden in each of the 90-minute instalments showing over the next three weeks.

"The title's in the series 2 titles, but which titles could we mean?" tease the BBC who have also revealed that the first letter will appear after about 15 minutes.

So think outside the box. Channel Sherlock. Use the science of deduction. And good luck...

Other than revealing that it's apparently a three-word title, this news doesn't do us American fans any immediate good -- but maybe the forum members on the other side of the pond will keep us posted!

Hi there ,  Yes @ this i was disappointed when Wimbledon ran over as i was watching and waiting for the clue :(
The clue the bbc gave is " The title is in the titles." and will appear in the first 15 mins of the show , and can only been seen in the live repeats of series two , one word per episode.
Kinda cryptic but fun none the less .I have deduced that they maybe / probably have put the word into the Subtitles we can turn on/off or maybe into the credits. I will deffo be watching and trying to  spot it . :)

p.s
TY btw way for the Hello @ Welcome that was nice , I had a fun and interesting evening reading some of the posts here , and decided to make a regular visit . i do <3 Sherlock and it's nice to discuss / share idea's about him . XxX

Specifically, they said "the first letter will appear after about 15 minutes."  So -- one letter at a time?  Let's see, if it's one letter every 15 minutes (yes, I realize they didn't exactly say that), then in a 90-minute show they could put six letters.

I agree that "the title is in the titles" sounds like they could mean subtitles.  On the other hand, if they were putting them there, wouldn't they have made that clear in the interest of fair play, so people could be sure to have them turned on?  Or maybe they're planning to make those particular subtitles visible regardless of whether you have subtitles turned on or not?

This sorta reminds me of the way PBS (which airs Sherlock over here in the US) highlights a few letters in the closing credits, and if you put them together, they spell a word (e.g., the word for "The Reichenbach Fall" was "believe."

So, did they say they'd start running Series 2 next week?  Apparently you're in the UK, so please let us know what happens!   :)

Hi Carol . Yes that makes sense , I read that they recommended you have paper and pencil @ ready , so aaahaa your probably right on the letters appearing one at a time . I hadn't thought of that .    so Thanks

It is worth pointing out that in the British TV industry, and in common parlance the term "Titles" often means the opening sequence (the part with the theme tune) and the corresponding closing sequence at the end. They are collectively known as the opening or closing "Titles"

But they said "the first letter will appear after about 15 minutes," and neither set of credits fits that criterion.  Puzzling.

Presumably all will become clear in good time, i.e., on Friday!

The BBC web site says that "Scandal" will be shown tomorrow (Friday the 12th) on BBC One, beginning at 20:30, so ending at 22:00 (i.e., from 8:30 till 10:00 pm BST).  That won't be viewable in the US, but at least we can hope to see internet reports (on this forum and elsewhere) starting sometime after 3:30 pm EDT.

Unless Janowicz demands a rematch, of course.

Right, they haven't used any complete ACD titles yet.

The third clue word was "bow," so that could be one of the other two words -- but then again, they haven't used any of the three clue words in a title so far.  My guess is that the title will be "His Last [something else]" so that the fans will be all atwitter, worrying that it'll be "His Last Bow," till the third word is finally revealed.

The producers definitely love messing with the fans :)

The title is His Last Vow

Here's the report from Sherlockology:

The title for the final episode of Sherlock Series Three has finally been revealed – ‘His Last Vow.’

The episode is written by Steven Moffat and will be directed by Nick Hurran. As teased by the cryptic three words revealed at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival last year, the episode title is a play upon the title of the canon short story ‘His Last Bow’ – the final chronological story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to feature Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson.

In addition, we can reveal that filming on S3E3: His Last Vow is set to begin on Monday July 29 2013, following a scheduled break in production that allowed Martin Freeman to complete filming on The Hobbit Trilogy. The date was first confirmed to Sherlockology by Production Designer Arwel Jones in May, during the final week of filming on S3E2: The Sign of Three.

The title for His Last Vow was spread throughout the repeat broadcast of Sherlock Series Two on BBC One in the UK, with individual letters appearing in the episode closed captioned subtitles in a different colour – this was why viewers from overseas were unable to take part in the game. UK viewers then had to piece the word together throughout the duration. Originally the intention was to reveal a word in each episode of the second series, but thanks to an initial delay for Wimbledon, and then a further scheduled delay due to the forthcoming London Anniversary Games broadcast on Friday July 26 2013, the second two words were inserted into the repeat of The Hounds of Baskerville tonight – by the time The Reichenbach Fall is now due to air on Friday August 2 2013, filming on His Last Vow would already be well underway.

So, to sum everything up, these are the titles for Sherlock Series Three, about to head into the final stretch of filming…

S3E1: The Empty Hearse
Written by Mark Gatiss, Directed by Jeremy Lovering

S3E2: The Sign of Three
Written by Steve Thompson, Directed by Colm McCarthy

S3E3: His Last Vow
Written by Steven Moffat, Directed by Nick Hurran

Here's a link to a Sun article on Benedict Cumberbatch's officiating a couple of friends' gay wedding, with some information on episode 3, which apparently will wrap in early September:
