Why did I keep getting signed out before I could post anything?

Hi all. The first times that I tried to post responses I would sign on, write my post or response and as so as I hit add reply or whatever, a message would come up saying that I was not a member and did have access to that forum. And sure enough I was no longer logged in. So I'd do it again and same thing happened. I finally changed the password and DID NOT SI:GN OFF again and that seemed to solve the problem.

Firstly I would suggest that users having this problem should check their browser settings and make sure that cookies are enabled.

Secondly if this doesn't solve the problem I would suggest Clearing your Browser Cookies and cache and logging in again, as it is possible that the session cookie that the forum saves upon login has become corrupt.

This may cause you to have to reenter login credentials for other websites as well.

It is possible that changing the password caused the session cookie to be rewritten, thus correcting the problem.

Undead Medic: Following your suggested steps just once should do it, right? And if the problem recurs anyway, there's likely to be something set up wrong on the computer (or just possibly an obscure bug in the forum software)? Also, please make sure I'm not telling any lies in paragraph #2.

Everyone else: There's an easy way to monitor your cookies (but only when you're on Sherlock Forum): If there's a small green triangular area fitted into the lower-left corner of your screen (with a white check / tick mark in it), your cookies are enabled. If not, they've gone south again (though I'm assuming the triangle may not actually disappear till you load a new page).

wildwoodflower: I am going to change the title of this thread, to make it easier for anyone else who may be having the same problem to find this information. If you have a better wording, you can change the title again by editing your initial post above. (This is true of any thread that you have started.)

The pop-up and associated green triangle only serve to notify users of the fact that the software uses cookies. It in no way affects your browser settings. Hence if cookies are blocked by your browser configuration your session login status will be lost upon refreshing or navigating away from the page.

Thanks, Tim, I'll go back and cross out that part.

So the green triangle merely means that I have acknowledged that the forum wants to set cookies on my computer (and perhaps given it my permission, for whatever that's worth). Even if I've set my browser to block cookies, the triangle will still be there (so it's fairly meaningless). Too bad -- that could've been a handy little diagnostic.
