Suspicious how? Do you think that Sherlock already knew there had to be an off switch on the bomb ...so he was purposefully ratcheting up the tension with John by insisting he had no knowledge of bomb diffusion and feigning absolute failure in his mind palace? ...without having seen the ep twice yet, I think that rather makes sense! Is that what you meant, Lady of Denmark?

I didn't catch that!!!! LOVE it when people point out awesomenesses (that's right, awesomenesses) that I didn't notice!!! Thanks Julia! Love that you referenced the ball chucking and House, it's so true!!! Hubs and I watched House religiously. When hubs started watching the Sherlock series with me he said, "He's like House!" And I was all like... um wrong! (WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!) Totally backwards! ...doofus I love Cumberbatch's delivery in that voice-over -- straight out of a 30's film noir. You are so right Carol! Very good point -- both your idea that Moftiss was poking fun at us yet again, and your point that ain't no way they're gonna please everybody. Maybe their best hope of making everyone fairly happy was to at least acknowledge a lot of the theories in this way. Didn't we all hear it when Sherlock muttered "Everyone's a critic." I'm missing your point here and I want to understand! Can you say more? Anytime i try to use the multi-quote i fail miserably! hence my posts after posts as i catch up to the messages of the present day! I so enjoyed your sketch shashu!

There has never been the suggestion that Sherlock is not trying to manipulate John. Quite the opposite in fact. That is the purpose of the lies. But what would lead Sherlock to believe that it would work? As the example of HOUNDS shows, he isn't stupid when it comes to understanding human nature in general and John in particular. Just as in that episode, Sherlock wants forgiveness. But in that episode he didn't attempt to get it by lying to or otherwise abusing John. If he had laughed at John, he would never have gotten an forgiveness. He would have lost John. So why did Sherlock do the opposite of what he has proven to himself works - if forgiveness was his goal? Why does he do the very thing which caused him the problem in the first place? On what basis would he conclude that a repeat of the offense for which he sought forgiveness would somehow elicit forgiveness of the either offense? Usually if you repeat a crime, you receive harsher punishment, not forgiveness! Sherlock understands justice. And that is not justice. And that leads to the question of why did it work? It shouldn't have worked - as the example from HOUNDS demonstrates. The belief that it would work is out of character for Sherlock. And the forgiveness of Sherlock's original betrayal by means of another betrayal by Sherlock is out of character for John. It is only by believing both men are complete idiots that one claims either action is in character. And neither one of them is an idiot. Why did John not go screaming into the night never to see Sherlock again? John, on the case with Sherlock, is in his happy place once again. The happy place that he has missed. Sherlock laughing until tears are streaming down is an extreme reaction, (I loved that part!) Witnessing Sherlock being over-the-top I think John (once again) realizes "All this is simply who Sherlock is. Warts and all. It's just who he is." Does he want to go back to his dullsville life without Sherlock? Or does he want to accept this kook as he is (again) and experience that exhilarating life with Sherlock again?

It was fascinating to watch this episode with hugsband! What he laughed at, what he responded to. He laughed so hard when the American thug flew past the window into the bins. Harder still when Sherlock said he lost count of how many times the guy "fell" out of the window. And I couldn't help but think of everyone here when he blipped past the opening of the show... landed somewhere in the first scene and I realized with mortification that he missed John opening the refrigerator to find a head! AAAAANNNNND the practically iconic moment of Sherlock shooting up the walls!!! The horror! The outrage! I was practically jumping up and down beseeching him to go back to see those moments! We get a trifled protective of our show I'd say...

Just doing a bit of rereading and I do love what you said about the paralleling, ss. After several viewings I never registered the white sheet/white dress and with their black clothing in the background yet. Marvy catch, not to mention everything else you noticed! I do love a work where the people who assemble it put so much care into these sorts of details. ...they feel almost like little prezzies when I discover them!

I've just read up to post #68, dateline 2012, where someone speculated Sherlock really fell into a truckbed full of Whosits and the body that hit the ground was Moriarty with a Sherlock mask and his clothes were stuffed with extra Whosits for a more sherlock body appearance, albeit a crunchy one... Having had the belly laugh of the day and a sudden urge for Cheetos, I think I'll return to reading later...

I can see why you would have Teyla! And I love the HECK out of your signature. It's spectacular!!! Carol and Toby, yes, good points. I wondered if John was intentionally ignoring Sherlock's flustered state in order to not feed into it. Right, and appealing to his intellect to possibly pull him out of it.

You guys are SO SWEET to cover up the season 3 spoilers. Thank you! I look forward to catching the inference when I see it! I've watch seasons 1 & 2 from netflix. Season 3 isn't on netflix so I'm in the process of figuring out how I might get the season onto my tv from Amazon. I'm going to have to find a death frisbee to put on to sleuth this one out ... Pamela I love your Jeremy Brett pic! Imagine the teenager that I was being ga-ga about Jeremy Brett! The man had it going on and it was such a sorry day when he passed. Nice to see him again thanks to you.

Look at the brain on Arcadia! Color me amazed! I'm gonna get back to it with your clues... I haven't been spoiler box diving.... yet. I've never seen this before... Did anyone else laugh out loud when you guessed incorrectly? Ruthy did make that up or is that the wallpaper? Absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing! -couldn't have that wallpaper up or my husband wouldn't know what to do with me! -
I thought it was very intentional that Moftiss had Sherlock say please after his telling Irene he never begged. And that it was all about Irene that he did it!

And thanks for sliding those scenes into the world of making sense, Carol! Any one have a take on why it took John so ridiculously long to acknowledge Sherlock's coming-apart-at-the-seams state by the fireplace?
-
Ha ha ha! That IS funny! I did like Sherlock's entrance with the harpoon although it did seem a bit disjointed from the rest of the story. But great insight into what John lives with every day! And happy to hear how it tied into the canon. I love the insights you guys offer up! Have to say, this is my least favorite episode. I guess because there's so much discomfort, Henry, Sherlock, John, and it's all because of paper tigers... or hounds in this case. When I watched it again I fast forwarded through Henry's scene with his tv and backyard and John in the lab hallucinating. Too hard to watch them having such a dreadful time. It didn't make sense to me how oblivious John was being with Sherlock in fron of the fireplace. The man was practically chattering his teeth and John keeps talking about other things? Um, hello? He's normally tuned into his friend... why is he either not noticing or refusing to acknowledge Sherlock's beyond-flustered state? Theories anyone? Must say, Carol, when I saw you were from Indiana on other threads, I immediately thought of this episode. How fun both you and your husband hollared "Liberty, Indiana"!!!! Here are two more puzzlements of mine about this ep: Is there something in the canon that explains why the word "Hound" catches Sherlock's ear and makes him want to take the case? Seemed to be a stretch that this was the defining moment about taking the case. And to have Sherlock have Henry repeat what he said exactly like he said it before, using the word Hound just seemed like writers needing to fill time for pity's sake. And then why the sudden turn around about coming along with? Sounds like a writer's child got a hold of the computer and noone changed the script back. The show is so much sharper than this usually... (Ok, so how do I really feel?! ) Why couldn't our favorite high functioning sociopath say "Margaret" aloud as he was typing it in????

Thank goodness there's no snarkfest here! aaaah, Belgravia is a ridiculously expensive residential district in London... That makes sense. I wonder if there's a cultural difference here: to my mind, "begging" means pretty close to groveling. In the English culture is simply saying "Please" upon request to beg for something considered begging? It struck me that all Irene Adler had to do to beg at the end was say "Please". I thought, THAT'S IT?! In reading this thread it occurred to me, Irene said she'd get Sherlock to beg (twice). He said something to the effect of how he had never begged before. So at the end when Sherlock indicates to John that he wants Irene's phone and John waffles, Sherlock says "Please". Do you think she got him to beg after all?

Hello! I love you won't you tell me your name? Actually I already know everyone's handles and that will do splendidly! This discussion is better than having your cake and eating it too! I've only just been bitten by the BBC's Sherlock. I'm in this glorious place where I haven't seen all the episodes yet. The anticipation! I suspect I will cave and watch the next: Reichenbach Fall sooner than later. I've been relishing going over previous episodes with a fine tooth comb and that marvelous transcript work! Capital "A" Adored Jeremy Brett's version and since i have that pretty much entire work in my background I have absolutely delighted in how this series toys with our expectations. ...Like a cat with a mouse. Belgravia is the fave episode so far. Thanks so much for clarifying the British definition of "pants" earlier! Yes, it does make it far funnier to know it means "underwear" to Americans! I knew I was missing things like that because of coming from this side of the pond! Help me on this point: "shipper" ? I've got the context but not the whole meaning. I prefer to take the last moments of the episode as a flight of fancy from Moffit and Gatniss. (did I see a blended-word name for that team?) Meaning that it wasn't a fantasy, Sherlock was indeed in Karachi and helped her escape her beheading. With logistics so improbable, they don't bother weighing the thing down with factual evidence of how such an event occured. Throwing in the quote "When I say run, Run!" from Dr. Who says this is scene is a wink of the eye. They're inviting us to follow them down this fun, crazy little path and just go along this fantastical possibility (like we've gone along with the whole supremely kooky Dr. Who concept). I've already drunk their cool-aid, I don't mind following them down that path one bit Why am I ok with Sherlock saving her life at this point? I like to think when Sherlock, John and Moriarty were back at the pool it was Irene who made the phone ring (Stayin' Alive) thus giving Moriaty and then Sherlock and John a way out of the stalemate. She saved him, he saved her. I feel Moffit and Gatniss made an elegant little package there complete with a bow on top. Did y'all catch Sherlock calling "Laters!" over his shoulder as he departed, now dressed, from the palace? The only place I've heard "Laters" is from Fifty Shades of Grey! Familiar though I may be with Fifty Shades, what is the "Belgravia" reference?
