Hi Carol, Wi-Fi at this hotel is hopeless so im struggling to stay online. You're right it was the spot I knew that I recognised it. I went on a Sherlock Holmes walk today mainly based on Sherlock. I stood near the 'Diogenes' and on the spot in Piccadilly Circus where the guy (or girl I can't recall) had a bomb strapped to her. I also saw the place that was used as The Diogenes in The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes and the place used as the theatre in `Murder By Decreee.' Had to resist correcting the guide on a few issues but it was really good. A couple of Robert Downey Jnr Holmes sights too. Only one for Brett☹️ What is the world coming too!

I always get my Thames bridges mixed up Arcadia as there are so many. Plus I was underneath it (not in the Thames I hasten to add.)

Hi Carol, I was on the Thames embankment not far from Embankment Tube Station (opposite side of the road.) I could be totally wrong but it just looked 'familiar.' I can't see the relevant episode at the moment though.

Irrelevant to the thread but earlier today I 'toasted' everyone on the forum with a cup of tea at Speedy's. Someone came out of 221b but it wasn't Sherlock though. Also think I might have found a Sherlock site. I haven't seen the series for a while and I'm not at home but I think it was the fistt meeting with an irregular (not the graffitti one though) if I recall correctly he gets out of a taxi, goes up some steps and gives someone some money. Can someone point me in the direction of the scene so I can double check that I'm right. I could be mistaken though

I have a collection of Herlock Sholmes stories in quite a large book. I'm not at home at the moment and I couldn't recall the author. I also use that name to post on a Jack The Ripper forum.

To be honest Carol I've never heard of Tapatalk so I don't think that I'm using it. It's just that when I 'touch screen' for a menu it doesn't include edit. The complexities of the computer world! One of the JTR forums that I use also has a rarely used chat room which my IPad isn't compatible with so I think that these Apple Pads inhabit their own little world in some ways. -

I saw it a long way back, and read the book, and I remember I quite liked both, although I realize now that many of the references to the original went over my head. For many many years I thought Holmes ran off with Irene at the end, and that was about the only point of reference to Irene Adler I had when I saw a Scandal in Belgravia. Needless to say, that story didn't turn out quite the way I anticipated .... or did it? It's supposed to 'explain' what Sherlockians call The Great Hiatus. The period from 1891 to 1894 (The Final Problem to The Empty House) when Holmes was presumed dead. Doyle wasn't always careful with his facts though as The Adventure Of Wisteria Lodge was supposed to have occurred in 1892. Sherlockians love debating these 'errors.' -

All I get is 'copy' 'look up' 'speak' 'share' and 'spell' . It's not a problem Carol I just need to watch the spelling. I'm someone who hates predictive text too. I always get caught out when I text. It takes me twice as long! I'll have to find out how to disable it. Give me a quill and parchment every time -

Obviously that should read 'acquired.' I was told about right-clicking to edit but I have an IPad and I can't figure out how to do it? -

They were ok. Perhaps a bit of an acuired taste? The main criticism was Frewer's exaggerated English accent. The guy that played Watson, Kenneth Walsh was pretty highly thought of though. Speaking of exaggerated accents, I don't know if you've seen the movie 'The Seven Per Cent Solution?' It stars Nicol Williamson as Holmes and the American actor Robert Duvall as Holmes. Based around Holmes cocaine addiction where Watson and Mycroft conspire to get him to go to Vienna to seek help from Sigmund Freud. The main criticism of the movie that I've heard was about Duvall. He's an excellent actor but apparently, and for whatever reason, he modelled his English accent on the conductor Sir Adrian Boult. Now I've seen a video on YouTube of Boult speaking and his accent isn't in any way outlandish. Duvall just exaggerated it. Decent film if you haven't seen it though. -

Don't know how they would have coped with Matt Frewer though -
Thanks Arcadia

I'm in error-mode at the moment! That should read 'Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace.'

Well guys I'm a bit embarrassed (well a lot really!) I think that I've got a pretty decent Holmes knowledge but in coming up with a question I had completely forgotten about Sir Ian McKellan. I won't sleep tonight

I just thought I'd start this for anyone who has any Holmes-related puzzles or brain teasers? I'll throw in a quick one for everyone but especially for either Carol or Arcadia (I've been trying to find the posts where one of you told me that you were a massive Tolkien fan, sorry I just can't recall just which one of you it was. To be honest you both look the same to me

Point taken Carol. Brett might have seemed just too strange for the time. I think the rest of the cast would have fitted in ok but a more 'restrained' Holmes would have been more acceptable. -

You're probably right Carol. Obviously they would have wanted as many people to watch as possible and they may have felt that Victorian England might not have struck much of a chord with a 1940's USA audience. Especially during war time. -

To be honest it was down to the movie companies. The first two movies 'The Hound Of The Baskervilles,' and 'The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes,' were made by Universal and set in the Victorian era. Then they gave up on Holmes and 20th Century Fox took over and decided to set Holmes in the modern era, fighting German spies etc. There was even an element of propaganda. I have a poster somewhere of Rathbone and Bruce where the caption reads something like 'Watch out Adolph. Meet our latest recruits.' They weren't the first to 'update' Holmes but they were far better than previous attempts. Another nerdy Holmes fact. An earlier attempt to 'update' Holmes was The Speckled Band in 1931 starring Raymond Massey as Holmes. His actress daughter Anna Massey married Jeremy Brett. -
Thanks Carol

I can't remember being in Mary Poppins but my memory isn't what it used to be

How about that! I just copied this drawing from my avatar on the Jack the Ripper Forum and it worked! The administrator put it up for me and so it was the correct size. This is a portrait that I did of Brett as Holmes. I have one of Rathbone and one of Cushing too. Too large to post here though.

Hi Carol, I'm sort-of a professional artist though I don't make a living at it unfortunately. I sell a few, mainly by word of mouth, friends of friends etc. I have an unsuccessful online store on Etsy called TheArtBankGB. I do drawn portraits in various styles. In actual fact I tried to use one for my avatar but it just said 'file too large.' Arcadia offered to help so i sent a picture to an email address that she gave me (not her own of course) but it didn't work. I emailed a pic to a friend who said that he'd reduced the size but it still wouldn't load. I'm utterly useless with technology. I suppose that I need some kind of editing programme which I'll have to look into at some point. Until then I'll have a blank avatar.

I think they're very atmospheric. I often listen to Holmes on radio. Especially if I'm drawing or just chilling out. As a collector I've only just stopped moaning about the fact that I can't get the Robert Hardy version. I bet it was great.

The above post should start with 'not really.' Once you post here is there no way of editing your posts? I always spot errors too late.

No really Carol. It's pretty decent and I think most people feel that it's a petty that Baker wasn't given another opportunity to play Holmes. The Grainger version is pretty weak. For fans of Star Trek, Stapleton is played by Williamn Shatner. Grainger was obvious;y a well respected Hollywood actor but he didn't really suit as a white haired Holmes. Charlton Heston also played Holmes and he was a bit better (but not much). There have been some pretty poor Holmes portrayals, often by otherwise good actors. Some just don't suit the part. Reginald Owen and Edward Woodward were both pudgy, unconvincing Holmes'. Clive Brook (the first talking Holmes) wasn't great. Raymond Massey was poor. The worst Holmes ever though was surely Patrick Macnee in The Hounds Of London (surely the most excrable Holmes movie ever, a real Turkey!) There have been a couple of fairly recent Holmes movies (I can't recall the titles but maybe my brain has subcontiously deleted them!) and they are truly, truly awful. Avoid at all costs awful. Many are critical,of Matt Frewer's Holmes and I can see why. He exaggerates the accent almost to a parody but I have a bit of a soft spot for him and the 4 movies he made. The guy who played Watson was excellent (can't recall his name though. Was it Kenneth something?) At least the poor Holmes' are more than made up for by Brett, Rathbone, Wontner, Cushing, Wilmer and of course Cumberbatch! If you get chance, and haven't already, check out 'A Study In Terror.' It's a Hammer movie. Holmes vs Jack the Ripper. It's very good and John Neville is another very good Holmes (there's a cameo role for a young Barbara Windsor too.)
