Lestrade pronounciation
HerlockSholmes replied to Pawse's topic in General Sherlock Holmes Discussion
The name Sholto was used by MJ Trow in his Lestrade stories. There's just no way of knowing the correct pronunciation of the name. It's down to interpretation. I've always said Lestrard because I grew up on Rathbone. -
Lestrade pronounciation
HerlockSholmes replied to Pawse's topic in General Sherlock Holmes Discussion
Bit more info. Doyle got the name from a fellow Edinburgh student called Joseph Alexander Lestrade. Lestrade is a village in the mid-Pyrenees (I don't know how to put accents over letters, sorry) Apparently L'estrade means 'raised platform.' -
Lestrade pronounciation
HerlockSholmes replied to Pawse's topic in General Sherlock Holmes Discussion
I don't think that there's a definate pronunciation. Obviously there's a recording of Doyle speaking but he doesn't say Lestrade unfortunately. Brett used Lestrayed while Rathbone used Lestrard. I was just messing around with an English to French online translator and typed in 'Les trade.' Unsurprisingly it came up as 'the trade.' Its a pure coincidence of course but you often hear tv police officers calling their work 'the job.' There was also no mention of Lestrade's Christian name in the canon but in some Holmes pastiches I've seen it referred to as George and Sholto. -
Has Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber Kidnapped Sherlock Holmes?
HerlockSholmes replied to HerlockSholmes's topic in Other Versions
That would work for me Carol. I'd love to find out what's going on though. More detective work is required. The game's afoot ! -

They could Carol. I quite like silent movies though. I agree that not everyone feels the same though. -

Doe, Turkey is long way to travel but at least you would have to travel as far as April. Venus is much further away and I bet the flights are more expensive.

The actor that has played Holmes on tv/film the most times (apart from Johnny Lee Miller) is the English silent movie actor Eille Norwood. He played the detective 47 times. Most, if not all, of these movies still exist but why can't we see them? Three are available to watch on YouTube and you can get the three in some box sets but as for the rest.... A couple of years ago I was searching a few websites and forums for information when I came across a post by a guy who told me what happened (I can't confirm this but it sounded true). The movies were made by a film company called Stoll. Apparently Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is a big Holmes fan so, through his Really Interesting Company, he bought the entire Stoll film catalogue so that he could own the Norwood Holmes movies. I found this out around 6 years ago, I think, so the question is....what is Sir ALW going to do with them? Surely he doesn't intend to just 'hide them away' so that only he can see them? If, however, he intends to release them why is it taking so long? Would any process of 'cleaning up' take this long? Either way these are important movies (Doyle admired Norwood's performances) and should be vailable to all. If anyone has any news I'd be grateful

As this is a Brett thread, and people will naturally debate whose was the best portrayal of Holmes and, if anyone hasn't seen him, how good was Brett, it's worth remembering that Jeremy once received a letter from Jean Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur's daughter, in which she wrote 'you are the Sherlock Holmes of my childhood.' You can't get a much better

No problem. I hope that you enjoy them

Canon References In BBC Sherlock
HerlockSholmes replied to believeinsherlock's topic in The Casebooks.
We know about Sherrinford from Doyle's notes and, if I remember correctly, it's mentioned in Doyle's autobiography which is called 'Memories and Adventures.' He was originally going to call 'A Study In Scarlet,' 'The Tangled Skein.' -
Hi Carol, Pons is Latin for bridge I believe. I did read of some significance with the name but I can't remember what it was. It's been said that he wanted a name that syllabically similar to Sherlock Holmes but it is a strange choice for a name. Of course there's a similar situation with the fictional detective Sexton Blake (who actually lived in Baker Street.) Pons is a little less, shall we say, cranky than Holmes! Pons is very popular. There's a society, for example, called The Praed Street Irregulars and I've also heard of a newsletter called The Pontine Dossier. I haven't got anywhere near all of the books (I think that I've got 4) but they are very good, especially if you can get them reasonably priced. Coincidentally I'm going to London on the 19th for an 11 day break (a couple of Holmes Walks included) and when I checked how to get the hotel I found that I'll have to walk down Praed Street! I'll see if 7b exists.

I wonder if anyone's had the experience of hearing a piece of information and then, years later, you begin to doubt whether you really heard it after all? I had that experience and no one can put my mind at rest☹️ A fair time after the Grenada Holmes series had finished it was suggested that it might have been time for a 'new' series with a 'new' Holmes and Watson. I remember it being suggested in a newspaper that Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie might be right for the roles. I don't know if they were ever approached though. Steven Fry is a lifelong Sherlock Holmes Fan. He's just narrated the whole canon for audiobooks (more money for me to spend

I know Arcadia, it sounds like a 'spoof' Lestrade.

Series 5 Rumors, Speculation, and Wish Lists
HerlockSholmes replied to Ozgood's topic in Rumours & Speculation
I think it's unlikely that there won't be a series 5 at some point. My only concern is that Cumberbatch might get tired of being thought of as 'Sherlock,' just as Rathbone started to resent Holmes. They certainly couldn't do another series with another actor in the role! -
Excellent and semi-autobiographical. I have a couple of copies one is pretty battered! I recently re-read The Mystery Of Cloomber because it's quite short and I was waiting for a book to arrive. I hope you enjoy it.

Murder Rooms:The Dark Beginnings Of Sherlock Holmes
HerlockSholmes replied to HerlockSholmes's topic in Other Versions
Hi Carol, It's a mystery series. Each episode is film length. Doyle was played by Robin Laing in the pilot and then Charles Edwards for the rest of the series. There are some well known actors in the series though: Charles Dance, John Sessions, Ric Mayall for eg. https://youtu.be/JtBHranrCYE This is the first one.
