I like the titleš The Honours system has come in for a lot of criticism over the years with accusations that they are often used as a reward for services to a particular political party. Make a large donation and some kind of honour will come your way which devalues the process for those that genuinely deserve recognition. When lists are produced you can almost hear the cries of āwhy?ā I notice that in the 2020 list Craig David got an MBE but I donāt know anything about him or why it was felt that he deserved one? Toby Jones got an OBE and Sheila Hancock became a Dame for her services to drama and charity (John Thaw got a CBE in 1994) Peter Cushing got an OBE in 1989. Christopher Lee got a knighthood then a CBE along with a lot of military awards which were sadly all auctioned off in 2017. I donāt know why Brett was overlooked but I know that there is a petition here (which Iāve signed) to get him a posthumous BAFTA. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/jbbafta

Hi Carol, Marquess is pronounces Mar Kwus. Thanks for clarifying about John Lennon. I couldnāt recall the details. On the refusal of honours. I didnāt know but Iāve looked it up and found that over the last 10 years it goes from 1.25% to 2.7%. The lowest umber of honours offered was 1,987 in 2011. The highest being 2,504 in 2020. If we averaged the out over the last 10 years Iām guessing that it would be 2.200-2,300 offered per year with around 2% being rejected. My Knighthood must have been lost in the Post.š

I just noticed that Carol had already answered the Honours List question.š On the refusal of honours, many have refused. I seem to recall John Lennon turning one down (or am I imagining it?) We also have the Peerage system of course. In order of importance these are Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount and Baron (with Duchess, Baroness etc of course) After the war Churchill was offered the Dukedom Of London but turned it down as it would have meant that he couldnāt have sat in the House Of Commons but would have had to have sat in The House Of Lords. The Commons is where the elected MPās sit (government and opposition) so this would have meant Churchill giving up the Leadership of the Conservative Party and therefore all hope of ever being PM again (which he eventually was of course) It used to be impossible to relinquish a title until a Socialist Labour politician called Anthony Wedgwood Benn came along. When his father died he inherited a title (Viscount Stansgate) which meant that he was no longer allowed to sit in the Commons. He fought this and it led to The Peerage Reform Act 1963. He renounced his title (even shortening his name to the less posh Tony Benn.)

No, Brett never received any recognition apart from people saying that he was the finest Holmes ever. Itās good that there are people pushing for recognition for him. It would be a case of better late than never. He was also universally well liked too of course.

Hi Arcadia, Its simply a list announced every New Year (they also make awards on the Queenās birthday) of people who have been given awards such as Knighthoods KBE (where you become Sir something) or, if youāre a woman you become a Dame DBE (like Judy Dench) Then there are awards like OBE (The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire - they havenāt noticed that the Empire has gone yetš) The MBE (Member Of The Order Of The British Empire) or the CBE (Commander Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire) Theyāre based on the old heraldic orders of chivalry. Knight and Dame are the highest. The CBE, then OBE then MBE. CBE - The CBE is awarded to individuals for having a prominent role at national level, or a leading role at regional level. CBEs are also awarded for distinguished and innovative contribution to any area OBE - The OBE is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions at a local level, or whose work has gained a national profile MBE - The MBE is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community which has had a long-term, significant impact. Thats without going into Baronās, Esrlās, Viscountās etc. Itās pretty complicated (even for us) Thatās 2000 + years of history for you.š

I did have a look Arcadia but only a very brief one. Iāll try again.š

I didnāt get to go inside J.P. I was on a London Walking tour which just happened to stop next to the Hospital. Thereās a Bartās Museum and they do tours by Ive never done one. They have a plaque inside commemorating the meeting between Holmes and Watson. https://www.london-walking-tours.co.uk/secret-london/holmes-watson-plaque.htm

You assume that because Iām a man that wouldnāt know thisšµ Youāre absolutely correct of courseš Its certainly not something Iāve paid any attention too Iām afraid Hikari but according to Wiki, before Victoriaās Diamond Jubilee the diamond was associated with the 75th anniversary. Considering life expectancy in those days I have to ask how many actually reached a 75th anniversary?

I thought you were joking Carol. Iād certainly never heard of Beryl Vertue.

Or, at the risk of the very valid question being asked āHow much time does Herlock have on his hands?ā 7 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 6 = 17 How many stairs leading up to 221B? šš

Ok, prepare yourself for my nomination for the most tenuous link..... The number on Jeff Hopeās badge was 71126. Split the number 7-11-26. So, 7th November 1926. Anyone born on this day is a Scorpio. The zodiac gemstone for Scorpio is......Beryl. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you.......The Beryl Coronet.šš

I was trying to watch closely but it looks like I missed an obvious one Carol.

Iāve been to Bartās and saw the Sherlock grafitto plastered everywhere. I wish I could have gone inside on a tour but I didnāt have time. I wanted to see the plaque. https://www.london-walking-tours.co.uk/secret-london/holmes-watson-plaque.htm ...... Was the knife there? How did I miss that? I did look for the Persian slipper though I might watch the second episode tomorrow? When Iāve rewatched the series I might get that book and see what Iāve missed.

Yes, I should have mentioned the pills Carolš

A very clumsy thread title which Iād be happy for the Mods to change.š Carol suggested this thread so here goes. I just re-watched A Study In Pink watching for any Canon references that I could see. Iāve probably missed loads. Some are pretty (or very) tenuous some are very obvious, like the first which I just add for completeness. A Study In Pink - A Study In Scarlet John has his army pistol - Watsonās service revolver which is mentioned numerous times. Johnās blog - Watsonās writings about Holmes. Sherlockās website - Holmes newspaper article which Watson dismisses. Mike Stamford - Stamford introduces Holmes and Watson. Barts Hospital. John and Mikeās coffee cups have the word āCriterionā on them - Watson met Stamford at The Criterion Bar. Lauriston Gardenās - The also the scene of the murder in ASIS Rache - Used in ASIS but as the German for revenge not Rachel. The phrase The Game Is On - The Gameās Afoot. Sherlockās mobile phone deduction - In The Sign Of Four Holmes makes similar deductions from Watsonās brotherās watch. āSuicideā Jennifer Wilson - In The Red Headed League the pawnbroker is Jabez Wilson. Also one of the cases mention is of Wilson, the notorious Canary Trainer. āSuicideā Patterson - One case mentioned by Watson is untold story of The Grace-Patersonās on the Island Of Uffa (different spelling so probably too tenuous to count) āSuicideā James Phillimore - In The Problem Of Thor Bridge, Holmes mentions the case of James Phillimore who āstepping back into his own house to get his umbrella, was never more seen in this world.ā So thatās a direct parallel. Sherlockās nicotine addiction - Holmes cocaine. Sherlockās 3 patch problem - Holmes 3 pipe problem. John leaves his stick at Angelaās - Dr Mortimer left his stick at 221b. Sherlock cleared Angelo of Murder by proving he was elsewhere committing a crime - Iām unsure if this idea was in the Canon (possibly not?) but itās used in a Rathbone movie I think it was The Voice Of Terror (the piano player in the pub.) 22 Northumberland Avenue is the address given - If you go onto Google InstantStreetView type 22 Northumberland Avenue you can see the Sherlock Holmes pub 30 yards away. Also Sir Henry Baskerville also stayed in the Northumberland Hotel. During the chase you see a sign for Lexington Street - In The Norwood Builder the housekeeper is Mrs Lexington. Taxi driver Jeff Hope - The murderer in ASIS is Jefferson Hope who drove a Hansom Cab. John tells Sherlock that heād actually been wounded in the shoulder - In the Canon Watsonās injury was initially in his shoulder but it later moved to his leg. Anderson - In The Five Orange Pips thereās mention of the loss of The Barque Sophie Anderson John shoots Jeff Hope through the window - Reminiscent of Sebastian Moran shooting the bust of Holmes in The Final Problem ......... Thatās all that I spotted. I kept thinking that the name Donovan might have been used in the Canon but I think Iām wrong in that (although the name keeps nagging at me. I even tried looking at the taxi drivers badge number 71126 as 7th of October 1926 but I canāt find anything relevant.

I might just do that Carol. Iāve been intending a re-watch but my current House obsession has got in the way. Maybe I need a House timeout. Iām just about to begin the penultimate series.
