  1. The last person took the basket with the last egg in.
  2. Yes, well done! Finally!
  3. Messed up in the UK means to have got it wrong. Mixing something up is to change the format. I meant that they went away from the canon/played with the format/didn't just base it on one book.
  4. Appropriate for the UK today!
  5. I thought they mixed it up with The Blind Banker. Although there are elements of the canon in it, I thought it was the most different-to-the-books of the 6 episodes so far.
  6. Yes to the whisky answer, well done
  7. Poisoned ice cubes in one glass, and none in the other is correct. There is another explanation in which both glasses have poisoned ice cubes... I know the elevator one so I'll keep quiet for a bit.
  8. Carol, I highly recommend all of Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse novels. I like them as much as ACD's Sherlock Holmes stories, and that's saying something! Start with The Riddle of the Third Mile
  9. Nobody's got the first one yet but Carol clearly knows the answer and is giving good advice. For number 3, poison is right but it's not in the bottle...
  10. Braces in the UK are both teeth torturing devices and straps to hold trousers up. Suspenders in the UK are clips that affix to a suspender belt, used for holding up stockings. A garter is a circular elasticated piece of lace which goes around the leg, also to hold stockings up, or over tights, and is usually worn on a woman's wedding day or when 'dressing up' for sexual antics. The Order of the Garter is named after the same garter actually ! "Various legends account for the origin of the Order. The most popular legend involves the "Countess of Salisbury" (either Edward's future daughter-in-law Joan of Kent or her former mother-in-law, Catherine Montacute, Countess of Salisbury). While she was dancing at a court ball at Calais, her garter is said to have slipped from her leg. When the surrounding courtiers sniggered, the king picked it up and returned it to her, exclaiming, "Honi soit qui mal y pense," ("Shamed be the person who thinks evil of it."), the phrase that has become the motto of the Order" says wikipedia.
  11. Nope I also agree with what she weighs in the spoiler.
  12. Yeah our Thorin is from Leicester and yes, you pronounce it Lester. It's famous for Red Leicester cheese, and Gok Wan If both were my husband I'd be over the moon (and perhaps in trouble with the law...)
  13. Yeah they had the same quantity of whisky. There are two possible explanations, both of which I'd accept. The answer lies above...somewhere
  14. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/191-3176854-2540305?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mark+gatiss Amazon is your friend.
  15. Similar to how Derren Brown's one does (read his books) but when I'm searching it's more like how you'd organise a filing cabinet with crosslinks than Sherlock's swiping method.
  16. Number 2 correct but the others are not. Keep going, you're really close!
  17. I preferred Hardwicke to Burke too - I agree it's the chemistry between them and Hardwicke's softer side. I've got the box set of the Brett series. Wonderful stuff. I have to say though I prefer Stephen Fry or Mark Gatiss as Mycroft and I'm not a fan of the Mazarin stone episode either.
  18. I quite agree. It's a well-chosen pairing. I think Mofiss have done a wonderful job. I've been reading Gatiss's novels recently and it's clear they both have a wonderful eye for character.
  19. I thought a SH forum should have some good ol' puzzles to work out. This is a bit like the I'll start off with some easy one, then you guys can guess or post some too. If you're guessing, quote the question and put your answer underneath. Feel free to ask more questions but bear in mind they might not be answered right away. 1. A man lies dead in a field in the middle of nowhere; an unopened package, that was the cause of his death, lies next to him. What happened? 2. A man is hanging from the rafters in a barn. The ground underneath him is damp. There seems to be no way it could have been suicide due to lack of chair or other object to stand on, but it was - why? 3. Two men walk into a bar and each order a whisky. The bartender pours it from the same bottle into clean glasses. After they have sipped their whiskies, one man dies. His death was caused by his drink. The other man is just fine. How come? Enjoy!
  20. Hello from sunny (yeah, right) Leicestershire, UK. Thought I'd introduce myself properly. I'm Christine and I'm a teacher. I'm in my 30s. I'm up for chatting endlessly about SH and ACD. I love the stories and the show. I'd be quite happy if Ben Cumberbatch or Martin Freeman (or both) were my husband I've read all the SH short stories and novels. I also have a mind palace but search it differently to how BC/SH does in Hounds of Baskerville. I also love Colin Dexter and Jeffery Deaver, should there be any fans out there. Feel free to ask me anything, should you be interested
  21. Goody goody And r.e. spoiler - I concur! Although one could see why she didn't guess at the time.
  22. Hi. So I was wondering - how has Sherlock gone down over the pond? I live in the UK and it's pretty huge here. Obviously, as it's set in London/UK us Brits are familiar with the scenery and how things work generally. I've got off the bus on Baker Street on numerous occasions, for example. How have you (non UK dwellers) come to love Sherlock?
  23. I wish I'd read this thread before I responded about A Case of Identity. Makes more sense now why nobody else has suggested it. I should have perhaps put it as a spoiler. I *think* I've read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories and I've certainly read all the 4 novels. I'm currently working through a huuuge book of non-Sherlock ACD short stories. I completely forgot I'd read A Study in Scarlet when I watched A Study in Pink and I'm glad - re-reading it was just brilliant. They did a great job. All the little references, and the Rache/Rachel part were fab. When I'm reading though I never picture BC and MF as Holmes and Watson. I always think of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke.
  24. Yes, I came via Google. Can't beat a bit of real Cheddar (cave aged of course) from the Gorge. Is there a proper introductions thread somewhere so I can find out about who I'm talking to? I've noticed some people live in the US, and was curious as to how Sherlock has gone down over there compared to in the UK.
  25. Although it might make more sense if the Empty House episode contained JW's own wedding and the 'rat' was the second episode. I assume we're all agreed that it's possible the third will be His Last Bow?
