No, he would go to a high-class (and high-priced) gentlemen's outfitter, tell the shop assistant what he needs ("I need a shirt: purple, royal oxford, tight fit, unobtrusive buttons, buttoned cuffs, ..."), then do some deductions about the cleaning staff's evening activities to pass the time until the assistant brings him what he needs. Then he'd buy it without trying (no need there, he'd see if it was too small) and leave the shop again within five to ten minutes (depending on the poor shop assistant's walking pace). All that could happen while he's out working on a case, scratching the backs of his homeless network or even taking a walk to "keep in touch" with the city (I imagine he does that). And he would see it as an investment

That's what I think.  And I think he stocks up so that he has everything he needs for a long period of time and then forgets about it.  That also gives us a way to explain the fact that the costumers did Sherlock's wardrobe for S1, and then, if I'm remembering my celeb gossip well enough, BC went off to do other roles that required him to bulk up slightly, meaning we occasionally see a button strain on those fabulous shirts.  Sherlock has obviously been taking on cases that require more physicality and occasionally has more muscular development than the original tailoring took into account.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that the official explanation for this was that sherlock had been bulking since the very first episodes because of john's presence at home: john would have made sure his friend ate regularly.

A great way to disguise the 2 years off & all the other roles that require bulking up.

Either that or I like the idea he has his tailor come to the flat.

Yeah, I think he's imperious enough to expect the tailor to come to him, not the other way round.

Maybe he just brings in one of his homeless network? It's hinted that the network's huge, so maybe somebody's got a hidden talent for this tailoring stuff.

I'm not so sure about using the homeless network as John says "so you scratch their backs " Sherlock "Then I disinfect."
