Yay -- I found the Clear All option!  I honestly don't think it was there the other day, but today I noticed a group of three horizontal lines, more or less in a stack but sliding off to one side.  Didn't know what it was, so of course I clicked on it, and poof!

Still hoping to get rid of the notifications altogether, though.  Damn nuisance, especially at three a.m.  I tried opening one of the notifications, but didn't see anything hopeful looking.

There is another way to do so.

Go to Settings.

Look for Sounds & Notifications.

Then Apps Notification.

It will give you the list of every apps you have, which you can click the offending ones and turn off the notification permanently. Hope it works because some apps have nine lives and stubbornly persistent.

I've seen that list, yes, but didn't know where to go from there.  Thanks for the confirmation that I was on the right track. I'll try again.
