For those that don't have Twitter, or those who may have missed the reveal the agonising wait is over. we now [allegedly] have the title for series 3 episode 1. I say allegedly, because, knowing our lords and masters the almighty "Moftiss" this could be an enormous red herring!

Mark Gatiss this morning tweeted the following:

So what do we make of this revalation?

Do we even believe it?

Sometimes they do go with what they call a "working title" that may be changed, but in this case, it is anyone's guess. The Game is on indeed.

Despite what I posted last night about disliking the typical Moftiss cat-and-mouse game, I'm almost hoping that this one really is just a joke.

What a monumentally dreadful pun!

On the other hand -- for anyone who's unaware that the episode is based on a Conan Doyle story called "The Empty House" -- it's an appropriate title, with a nice wistful tone to it. In fact, it may be a better title than "The Hounds of Baskerville." If one can ignore the pun. (Good luck!)

Hubby points out that the title really should be:

"The Adventure of the Empty Hearse"

Yup, that would make it more canon for sure. Not that is at all important. I suppose at some point they might decide to break with the canon all together. It will be interesting in any case.

It really is terribly clever, just that the pun makes me cringe. I guess it's either the title -- or not. Nothing we can do about it.

But if it's a good episode, who really cares what the title is?

That pretty much says it all. I know I can love a book and forget the title and author altogether.

They've been saying for quite some time that the first episode is based on "The Empty House," so the announced title doesn't tell us anything that we didn't already know. (Titles of the other two episodes may be more useful -- but if so, they probably won't be announced ahead of time!)

I'm still wondering whether it's the real title or not. For one thing, Sherlock had already been "buried" by the end of "Reichenbach" -- so where does a hearse fit in now? Of course, there could be another hearse, unrelated to Sherlock's funeral. Maybe the rat is hiding in it!

All good questions. With ninety minutes to fill, might they be planning to do more back story to fill in what happened once Sherlock's

"body" was spirited away into St. Bart's?

I suspect you're right about that. They talked about having filmed "what really happened" while they were filming "Reichenbach." I suppose that referred mostly to "how'd he do it?" -- but as you say, there's also the "what happened next?" angle, for both Sherlock and John.

The title made me smile, and seems quite appropriate, since Sherlock is very much alive. To carry off the fake death, there must have been a hearse, and it must have been empty (of our hero, at least). So...I like it, corny as it is ;)
