In the commentary, BC says he had wicked nicotine poisoning but was still able to get through the next day's scenes in one take. Ok, I looked it up on line and he is a heavy smoker. So, I admit I miss spoke, my bad.

Wait, they couldn't just give him a fake patch?  That sounds messed up.

Not from the patch, Mr. Holmes -- he got sick from actually smoking in the morgue scene in "Scandal" -- only a few puffs, but lots of takes, apparently.

Ah sorry, I didn't read the whole discussion.

As others have already said, I'm surprised they couldn't fake that either.

I think they had something like 20 takes on that smoking scene...and he was pretty sick by what he said in the interview. And yes, the nicotine patches had to be fake. A heavy smoker and those patches to not mix. He would have to have been off cigarettes all together to even attempt a patch.

So this thought just occurred to me and it probably doesn't matter, but instead of Sherlock using nicotine patches wouldn't it make more sense if he used an e-cigarette perhaps?

It's hard to smoke three at a time when you have a "three-patch" problem!

So true..!

Perhaps poor Benedict should've used these?

I hate to think of all the nicotine and tar an actor gets just for fulfilling a role, esp. if they are non-smokers in RL. If anyone has watched shows like Mad Men, where almost every character smokes, one has to wonder how do non-smokers cope?

Does anyone remember this -- In SoT, during his best man speech, when Sherlock is talking about John's middle name, they show him walking into the sitting room with his mouth full of cigarettes which he proceeds to stuff into the toe end of a persian slipper.  Nice canon reference!

Especially since the look on his face was one that made it obvious that he was trying to keep it a secret from John who was sitting right there, pushing the fully charged slipper under the couch.
