PM "Save" (in Draft folder) feature

Carol the Dabbler

Recommended Posts

It used to be that if I was composing a Private Message but couldn't finish it immediately, I could save it in my PM Draft folder.  The folder is still there, but I no longer see the "Save as a Draft" button (which used to be next to the Send button).  Is there now some different way to save a message-in-progress?

Or am I simply spacing out again?

Added later:  I wasn't exactly spacing out, but I failed to realize that the Draft feature is available only for the first post of a message thread, and only until that message has been sent once.  See this post and this one for a fuller explanation.

It's still there for me. (Save (Send later) )

Are you only seeing two buttons?

That's all I was seeing the other day, yes, two buttons and a Cancel option.  Hang on, I'll go check -- OK, I'm going to the "Full Editor" page, and there are only three options, Send, Preview, and Cancel.  Now I'm going to the Preview page -- still the same three options, with no "Save" capability.

(Added: Switching from my usual IP:Board skin to Deviant 3 makes no difference.)

What are the rest of you seeing?

I've got Send, Preview, Save and Cancel as shown above. Explorer 9 on a laptop.

Is your messenger storage capacity full?

It says I'm at 64% capacity with 250 messages.  Of course that's based on number of message threads, so I have no idea about megabytes or whatever.  But it does seem somewhat suspicious that 250 is such a nice round number.  Hang on, I'll try deleting something -- nope, that didn't help (and neither did using a different message thread for my test) -- though for all I know the Draft option disappeared some time ago, since I haven't used it lately.  Oh -- wait a sec -- it still says 250 messages, even though the one I deleted is definitely gone.  I even tried closing the messenger and reopening it.    Any more suggestions?

Well 250 is the current maximum number of stored messages for the moderator user group. So I would say that that is the issue here. Although why it says you're at 64% capacity is odd, as there is no setting for message storage limitations in megabytes.

And why does it still say 250 after I deleted one?

I think the percentage refers to number of message threads, like 125 should be 50% of 250, and it always seemed to be working that way before you increased the limit.  But 250 would be 64% of 390, which seems peculiar -- that's not even a round number in hex!

I will try deleting more message threads and see if that helps.  *sigh*  I was thinking I still had some time before I needed to do that!

Deleting three more has made a difference in the percentage number -- it now says 62%.  Still only two buttons and Cancel, though.

But I just realized something -- the "250" it lists is my quota, NOT my current number of message threads.  I actually have only 150-some, which really is 60-some percent of 250.  So that's apparently not the problem.

Hmm, wait a minute -- my old limit was 150, wasn't it?  Lessee what happens if I go below that number (maybe there's still a 150 hidden in the software somewhere).  At 150 messages (plus 6 drafts), it's still just the two buttons, ditto at 149 + 6, same at 144 + 6 (exactly 150 total).  OK, one more, to get the total below 150 -- at 143 + 6, still no Save button.  So nope, I don't think that has anything to do with it.  Sorry!

Indeed I have - I'd make a screenshot but it looks exactly like in Tim's, above. I apparently have 14 per cent of my storage quota (also 250) in use if that helps any.

Thanks, Martina.  So it may have something to do with my larger number of messages.  Or not.

Tim, is there anything different about that Save button (other than the obvious) -- like, does it require a different plugin or something?  And do you know of any circumstances when it's not supposed to be displayed?

Any thoughts yet regarding this:

On other fronts, Martina has tried logging in as me, and she still gets the Save button just fine.

I've tried this a number of different ways here at home -- on each of our laptops (which run two different versions of Windows -- same Firefox, though), logging in on each as myself and as Martina -- still no Save button.  Then on Alex's company laptop (maintained by their IT department, so somewhat different software), running Internet Explorer, logging in as Alex, as myself, and as Martina -- still no Save button.

FYI, Tim, my Save button was working just fine as of 16 July 2014, because I saved my most recent draft then.  I don't believe I'd tried it since then, until just the other day.  We get DSL from our local phone company, distributed through a router over ethernet cables, and I tried this on three different ports.

I plan to go to the library tomorrow and try this over their wifi connection.  I believe they also have public computers there, and if so I'll try logging in from one of those.  I'll try to remember to find out which ISP the library uses, and what type of service they have.  Anything else I should try?

A thought I just had was clearing the cache/cookies to see if that might help/be a factor (which I realize shouldn't be a factor when trying different computers).

Presumably not, especially since Alex's current company computer is practically brand new.  I don't believe I'd ever used it at all, and Alex hadn't used the Messenger since he got it.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.  Does your Messenger's Full Editor have a Save button?

In any case, trying this on a public computer at the library should tell us something (though I have no idea what!).  I'll head over there in a couple of hours.

Silly me, I didn't notice it was April first!   :P  Y'all have been just funning me about that so-called Save button, haven't you?

I am honestly bewildered.  I just got back from the town library, where I logged onto a public computer (using Internet Explorer) as Martina -- and still no Save button.  I had also tried logging onto my own laptop there, both as myself and as Martina, and I had tried logging onto the public computer as myself.  Nary a Save button.

Alex logged on from work today (as himself) -- using the same company laptop as last night, but over the company intranet -- and got no Save button either.  Maybe they're illegal in the state of Indiana?

Well that's as good an explanation as any at this point, honestly. And I promise we really weren't kidding you about the Save button:

Well, shoot -- I've apparently found the answer!   :picard:

The Save button is only available for brand-new (as-yet unsent) message threads (though those drafts can be retrieved and re-saved any number of times, in my experience).  That's where I had encountered it before, and son-of-a-gun, it's still there.  I first noticed that it was not there one day when I was replying to an ongoing message thread, got my (lengthy) answer about half done, and realized I was too sleepy to finish.  The Save button is still not there under those conditions.

My apologies to one and all for this wild-goose chase.  But at least I (and perhaps you) have learned something (other than don't be an idiot) -- the Save button is available only on new (unsent) message threads.  Once the message has been sent, that capability is no longer available, even on that initial post.  Or something like that.

Well, it would be nice if any old message -- or any old post, for that matter -- could be saved as a draft.  It would be very helpful when I'm halfway done writing a rather intricate explanation and realize that it's getting late and I'm starting to blither.  But now that I know the draft capability is available for (only) new message threads, I can just copy my half-done post into a new message thread and save that.  A solution exists.

Yes, this would seem to make sense thinking about it! :)
