From Sherlockology today:

Rumours have been flying today thanks to the apparent possibility of a Sherlock Christmas Special. While long time readers will know that the standard three episodes have been shot for Sherlock Series Three, we went directly to the BBC to reconfirm that none of these form the basis of a dedicated Christmas Special, which resulted in a swift denial - 'There won't be a Christmas Special.'

In addition, once again no airdate for Sherlock Series Three has been set as yet. For months a date of October 31 2013 has been erroneously posted on the Internet Movie Database, and we can now definitively confirm that this date is also false - post production on the third series will be ongoing through October and November. While we are not privy to any planned completion date for the new episodes, scheduling cannot take place until the completed episodes have been delivered to the BBC by Hartswood Films.

Rest assured, as soon as dates become available for the UK premiere of Sherlock Series Three, and any worldwide airings, Sherlockology will be sharing them as widely and as loudly as possible.

Of course, just because they didn't film an actual Christmas Special doesn't mean they couldn't show one of the episodes on Christmas Day.  But the best anyone can say now is apparently, not till November, at the very earliest.

I was really, really hoping that the October date was true... I can't wait any longer; I'm going to go insane!! :(

It's going to be Jan 1st, isn't? That's what the new favourite date seems to be, and if it's been confirmed that it won't be until November at the earliest, then it's looking likely...

Once it has happened to me. My friend and I waited for the continuation of the book and it was delayed. Later I learned that this wasn't a sequel and was rewrited first book. I need see Sherlock's 3 season! :(

Blogtor Who was the one who tweeted about a Jan. 1st date.  He's usually a very reliable source of information and not given to reporting rumors.  He's also very adamant about this date, and there has been no direct refutation.  So I will go with this date until confirmed otherwise.

It's possible that even the BBC doesn't know for sure at this point.

I would personally expect it to be sometime around the holidays, but probably not January 1st, because that'll be a Wednesday -- hasn't the BBC always shown Sherlock on Sundays?

As far as I can remember Carol, you're right; I think it has always been shown on Sundays... noooo, I don't want to wait even longer!! :(

Hey, it could just as well be sooner -- Sunday, December umm, let me think, 29th.  Or even earlier in the month.

I've seen somewhere that the first and the second series are in 2013 and the third is in 2014. Not sure about it, but the man linked me there said he can believe the site.

That's what Internet Movie Database (IMDb) has been saying for quite some time, October 31st, early November, and January.  It's normally a pretty reliable site.  But according to Sherlockology (above), the BBC has flatly denied the October 31st date, so I'd say the whole thing is suspect.

Oh  And they all do know that we will wait. They know that they are brilliant and feel free to do the things like that  -_-

Hmmm...in the UK it seems like at least one episode will be in 2013, since it was in the 2013 Original British Drama trailer...

Ooooo! Good point!! *is foolishly hopeful* :D

In Martin Freeman's recent talk at University College Dublin, he said they hoped Series 3 would be even better than the first two, but admitted that actually depends on audience response, so "we'll see in January."  (That's in Part 2 of the video, at about minute 10.)

Now, that could be his personal estimate, or Hartswood's current best guess.  Presumably nothing official has yet been announced, or Sherlockology would have it.  But maybe starting in late December (fingers crossed) and running into January?

I'm really, really hoping so. If I find out it's going to be delayed again until March or something ridiculous, I'm not sure I'll be able to cope!

According to Radio Times from a BBC source, Sherlock Series 3 will air in the UK before the 19 January date that it will air on PBS in the U.S. and Steven Moffat said that he thinks it will end up being the very end of this year or the very beginning of next year.  This is good for us because we already ordered the Region 2 DVD set from Amazon.co.uk and they will probably ship it right after episode 3 airs in the UK.

Thanks for noticing that!  I'm pretty sure I'd read that article when RT posted it five days ago, but the parts you mentioned hadn't really registered:

It is the first time ever that the US air date for the show has been announced before the UK. A BBC source told RadioTimes.com that they "are not in a position to announce the air date until later this year", but have confirmed that UK viewers will see the programme before the US.

Speaking at Cheltenham literary festival last week, show-runner Steven Moffat said, "I would place good money on it being at the very end or the very beginning of the year," suggesting the UK air date may be significantly before the US transmission.

You're right, that's good news for those of us who have pre-ordered the DVD from the UK -- and for UK viewers as well, I suppose!

One of my dad's friends made a remark yesterday about how it's only 8 weeks till Christmas, and the only thing that ran through my mind was 'that means it's only 9 weeks til Sherlock'... hopefully :D

... or less -- I'm currently putting energy into the 22nd, 29th, and 5th, so we'll have our Region 2 DVDs before PBS starts showing their 82-minute versions.
