I shall look out for 'fanfiction books' in our bookstores. There's going to be loads, the way the 'Sherlock' series has taken off. Unless there's some restriction on writing 'Sherlock' stories...........

There have been a whole bunch of paperback novels based on the original Star Trek and its spinoffs, starting circa 1970, but those had to be licensed by Paramount.  You're right, the potential is certainly there for Sherlock, if the BBC is willing to cooperate.

I remember in the 1990s when they were looking for authors for the "Strange New Worlds" fan written anthologies, it was advertised on the alt.startrek.creative newsgroup.

Also, Marion Bradley (RIP) used to let people 'play' in her Darkover universe and gave many a budding writer their first exposure through fan written anthologies. Seems to have very much gone out of fashion now. I know Eric Flint encourages fanwritten works in his 1632 Universe to be submitted to official sources and published as part of the "Grantville Gazette" e magazine anthology.

I do know that the "Undershaw Preservation Trust" have published books on "Sherlock"  if most of the proceeds go toward the Trust. Sometimes if they have an idea for a project they will advertize and ask for submissions.

Not a book, but iirc the Gabriel Knight series of computer games had a dedicated forum for fan fiction stories on their official web page, and I loved them for it. No idea if Jane Jensen's planning something similar now with Pinkerton Road Studio, though.
