I started a thread that contains free audio. Much easier & interesting to listen to the old English. I don't know if this would help others. I like listening. It does make it more exciting to see all the references to canon. SIB, follows a lot in the original story.

Funny -- I never enjoyed reading Conan Doyle's stories until I got an unannotated version.  Dunno why that helped -- maybe the annotations (which never seemed to answer any of my actual questions) distracted me -- or maybe the smaller, lighter volumes were just easier for me to handle.

I prefer the short stories.  Most of the novels seem to consist largely of padding, though Hound of the Baskervilles is nice and meaty.

I had no problem with the "old English". What I did have a problem with though was that the stories were rather repetitive and sometimes predictable and boring. But overall I enjoyed it quite a lot.
