Split off from another thread:

Well the production team had two obvious editing mishaps in SO3....

Namely?

Posted

The brown sticker on Sherlock's wrist to catch the sound of the glass falling from his hand.. They forgot to somehow blurr or cut that out.

Also the scene were Mary runs after Sherlock and John during her wedding reception. Her viel is shown flying thru the air as if she already took off running, but then they cut to her still sitting then she takes off running. They really Really really should have caught that.

There's also the mistake in the Hound of Baskerville, the shadow of a person / possibly a camera guy, appears on the door that John is trying to get out of in the lab, but his access card is being denied. At 1st I thought it was Sherlock's shadow, but then that wouldn't have made since.

Guess I never noticed those things because they're not part of the story.  But now I'm gonna notice them, and they'll drive me nuts!

Yeah. I went to art school & my major required that I took 3 video courses. Which of course included editing and blue screening at the time, now they use green screening.

I'm a stickler when it comes to bad makeup, animation, & I'm always looking @ the staging & cinematography. So I'm really surprised that no one caught those. The writers, the directors, especially the production team... None of the actors when they watched it back, the study group? This ain't no 5 team 2$ production, soooooo - yeah, I'm really surprised about that brown thing on Sherlock's wrist, it was throughout that entire scene.

It wasn't a birthmark either, you can tell its some type of bandage material. Also there's no sign of that brown patch in his mind palace, when he discovers the may fly man was there @ the wedding.

Posted

Maybe it was a bandage, supposed to be more-or-less the same color as his skin so no one would notice it?  A bandage on Benedict Cumberbatch, I mean, not on Sherlock Holmes.

Posted

It was no where close to his skin color. And even still there are video editing tools to remove those kind of things off the screen. I mean if for some reason Benedict came in with a black eye they wouldn't just leave it there unless it fit the scene.

If the " bandage" was intentional, should have continued into his mind palace. It certainly wasn't a bandage though, I could see something small underneath the material. I really do believe it was some kind of device to pickup on the sound of the glass.

Wow

I didn't catch that. I tried to start a thread about production mistakes. It didn't catch on. And apparently I'm also the only one who can't stand actually reading canon.

We just watched So3 the other night, and I finally noticed that brown patch.  It looks like an ordinary cloth-type adhesive bandage to me.  (I have no idea whose skin tone those things are supposed to match, but it sure ain't mine, and obviously not Cumberbatch's either.)  Since it was mostly under his shirt cuff, maybe they didn't realize it would show -- and once they had filmed the scene, it would hardly seem worthwhile to shoot it again just for that.  I don't think they routinely use much CGI, and when they do, it seems to be to add things (like the flame on the fake gun in "Study in Pink"), rather than for minor cosmetic fixes.

I doubt that it was any kind of microphone, because it would have been much easier to either hide an ordinary mini-mike on the floor near where the glass was actually going to smash, or just dub in an appropriate noise later.  Or did you literally mean the sound of the glass sliding off his hand?  If that was audible, I didn't think to listen for it.  Sorry!

Well they wouldn't have to reshoot anything. That's what the editing team is for. They do special effects. . removing that "bandage" would be sooooo easy compared to all of the other things they do. It's as simple as cutting and pasting once they make a skin graft. Easy peasy

Also I meant they were attempting to catch the sound of glass literally sliding from his hand. Which with actual glass or better yet crystal, if wet makes a very distinct crisp sound. Its nicer to get the actual sound. It's cooler than a sub of that sound. Please see Sandra Bullocks Mrs. Congeniality, for Gracy Lou Freebushes talent of playing wine glasses.

Speaking of continuity errors in The Sign of Three, how about Major Sholto's left hand in his last scene in his room magically being healed after all those years!

Wellllll. I didn't even notice that. Yeah they apparently only had 2 days to shoot on site for SO3, So I believe they had to rush things. But the editing & production team. These people get paid to do this stuff. So even mishaps are easily fixed via editing. If they didn't have additional footage- that's what the CROP tool is for. Hello!!

OK, I see what you mean now.  And I love that movie!

There's also a bit of an error in ASiP, too. In the restaurant scene, John never orders anything but Angelo gives him a plate of pasta or something.

Isn't there a break in between, though -- it's not all one take, I mean?  So John could have placed his order when we weren't looking.  (By the way, according to Sherlock: The Casebook, that was basil & parmesan fettuccine.)

Too bad we don't live together.  If we did, you could have pointed that out to me!

Do you mean that the scar was gone, or that he was miraculously able to use that hand?

Really? You guys communicate via forum? You're as bad as John and Mary ....

No scars.  I thought it was obvious!  You see, but you do not observe. :D

We finished watching the episode tonight, and I pointed out that when Sholto starts to unbuckle his belt, we are seeing his image in a mirror -- his facial scars appear to be on his right side, and his jacket laps over the wrong way, too.  So the fully-functional scar-less hand we see is actually his right.

I am restraining myself!  :D

They got me with the mirror view!  My mistake.  Sorry.

To be fair, it's not at all obvious.  The mirror fills pretty much the entire screen.

I stumbled over a gif of that glass being dropped, where you can see that patch clearly enough:
