Episode 4.0: The Abominable Bride (alias The Special)
Sacker replied to Undead Medic's topic in Special and Series 4
No spoilers from me until it's aired everywhere. Loved it!!! Man it's great to have Sherlock back. The end of a very long dry spell and a nice Christmas present. I really dug the handling of the Victorian time frame. Wasn't sure how or if it was going to be addressed (nor did I need it to be), but even that was a nice surprise. Top notch from everyone involved. Much to expand on in a day or so. Even after this long break, I was right at home immediately. Just like a long-time friend. Instantly comfortable. I put a log in the fireplace, opened a nice Tempranillo, got comfy on the couch, and raised a glass. Welcome back 221B. -

Started a Sherlock marathon this week to get me through needing a fix. ;-) Watched A Study In Pink two nights in a row. Blind Banker is up for tonight. One of my least favorite episodes. Not because it's bad (it isn't), but it just doesn't draw me in. Not sure why. I've skipped it a few times this past year, so tonight I'll watch it with fresh eyes. Maybe I'll feel more interested now that it's been over a year since I've seen it.

Episode 1.0, The Unaired Pilot (60-min. "Study in Pink")
Sacker replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Series 1
I agree, with both points in that sentence and Overly Romanticized is an excellent way to put it. It doesn't fit with the character and shouldn't be made to. -
About Modern Day Sherlock, Were You Convinced?
Sacker replied to Undead Medic's topic in BBC Sherlock General Discussion.
That's absolutely not the case for me. I much prefer a cerebral story vs an action story. I can't even begin to count the number of action films I've passed on strictly for that reason. Entire franchises are completely foreign to me because they're action-first, substance-second. -

I was about to settle in with a late night episode of Doctor Who. All this Pilot/Study discussion has got me craving some Sherlock. ;-) Since Study In Pink is my favorite episode, I feel fortunate that I have two versions. A deeper version and a tighter version. May just have to go Pilot tonight. -

Man, I didn't even snap to that contradicting the story. I'll go ahead and give myself the Picard facepalm. ;-) -
Episode 1.0, The Unaired Pilot (60-min. "Study in Pink")
Sacker replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Series 1
Finally watched it (not a fan of alternate versions). I enjoyed it. From some of the discussions, I was expecting it to be really different. I didn't think it was, at least not in a take me out of the story kind of way. No doubt about it, Study is much more polished, but the core of the story is all there in The Pilot. In fact, while I most certainly prefer Study, there are some things that work really well in The Pilot. Two things jumped out immediately. One was the rainy evening at the crime scene, To me, that sort of calmed down the scene. It gave the insults and accusations out on the street an equalizing layer. In Study, that portion of the episode seems a little harsh (lighting\interaction\etc). The second was the lack of Mycroft. I love the character as written & acted, but the very first episode had enough going on without adding yet another layer of mystery. Sherlock and John coming to terms with each other, Sherlock's personality, John's personality, and the crime itself are plenty for one episode. To me, the Mycroft tangent was an unnecessary distraction for the first episode. One thing I thought was greatly improved upon in Study was the cabbie\Sherlock pill scene. It works much better on the bigger scale of the school. I also prefer Vinette as Sally. Some of it could be that I liked her already as an actress, some is the lack of uniform in Study. She comes across as a more substantial character, not just a uniformed officer insulting Sherlock. I like also that she becomes a bigger part of the series as it goes on. The added graphics for texts vs showing the phone work really well also. Easier to stay in the moment of whatever is on-screen at the time. Anyway, that's it. Nothing too dramatic because I didn't see the differences as too dramatic. I'll gladly watch it again occasionally. Won't replace Study, but doesn't threaten it either. -

No. I'm completely unfamiliar with them. I better do my homework. Is it modern? -
About Modern Day Sherlock, Were You Convinced?

I wasn't aware of the show the first two seasons, but obviously aware of the character. Hearing that it was in a modern setting was not only acceptable to me, but in fact a deal maker. I have absolutely nothing against the character as traditionally written, but have no interest in seeing it as a period piece. For the record; I love period pieces. I just never found previous versions of Sherlock to be terribly interesting. I'll go one step further and say I feel like this current version has ruined me for period versions. I not only have no desire to see what someone could do with it in that time frame, I now have no interest in seeing the Downey films. This is Sherlock Holmes for me now. It clicked in a way no other versions ever have or ever will. -
This is pretty much the extent of my TV watching. Current Doctor Who Sherlock Downton Abbey The Big Bang Theory Game Of Thrones DVD or Netflix Columbo M*A*S*H Star Trek TNG The King Of Queens The rest of my TV time is spent watching baseball (April - October), the only sport I follow. During the off-season, my reading goes way up. I already spend a fair amount of time reading anyway.
-
That may be the one scene that most solidified it for me. Not so much the walking away part (which is fantastic), but the moments leading up to it. When Sherlock starts to explain who the killer could have been, then realizes he's describing John and quickly recants. I love the depth of that interaction. There is a trust there that is perfect. A seriousness that will carry the show. That was the moment I was hooked.

Looking forward to it, but a touch nervous. On shows or films where I'm a huge nerd, I'm sometimes weird about altering the in-show world. I'll watch it for sure though. It's the same reason I don't watch The Making Of... type documentaries. I don't want the magic taken away. I'm fine with shows about shows, like the Doctor Who series The Doctors Revisited http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Doctors_Revisited Those are interviews with cast and crew, but not about how they filmed effects and scenes. In fact, I really like The Doctors Revisited because there are times when I need a dose of one era without starting an episode or two and I still get a bit of an escape.

Absolutely. Besides, how can I not dig a board that actually has a Picard Facepalm as a smilie?

It's been about two months since I've discovered the show. I've watched them all several times, have my favorite characters, favorite moments, and favorite scenes. DVDs ordered. Joined a nerd board, finally got deep into the mythology of the character, bought the soundtracks, etc, etc, etc. Taking all that into consideration, I still keep coming back to A Study In Pink as my favorite episode. They've done some incredible work since, but this is still the episode I go to when I need a fix.

(Emphasis mine in the quote above) I think this sort of show (cerebral) lends itself more to a deeper fan base as opposed to a rabid, angry, "OMG, how dare they...the entire franchise has been destroyed" fan base. I'm a moderator on a Star Wars board and I don't have to tell you how fractured and at-war that fan base is (with each other, with Lucas, and even the story itself). I'm a fan of a tiny portion of that franchise, but I still have my hands full with keeping the sides at bay. Star Trek is the same, divided. Granted, those are film & TV franchises which are decades old, spanning multiple generations and cultural trends. That said; I still don't see this franchise, modern or classic, having that type of divide. Doctor Who and James Bond are somewhere in between. On-topic; I like the state of the story going into this hiatus. Nothing even close to a cliff-hanger. This ended in such a way as to give us a moment to catch our breath, which I think we need. A lot has happened. I also think the story's end was set-up with this hiatus in mind. They knew they would be taking an extended break. Not asking your fan base to wait two years for a specific answer to something is the right thing to do. It's respectful to the fans.

That's really it for me as well. I like Mary well enough, as written. However, I'm disappointed that John, the character I most identify with, has forgiven her. They were right to have alluded that it took months of silence before he came to terms with all that had happened, but it would be never for me. I wouldn't miss her if she were gone.

(Emphasis mine in the above quote). Your statement is how I feel and exactly why His Last Vow is my favorite of Season 3. A Sherlock uber-nerd friend of mine had told me ahead of time to give Season 3 a couple of episodes for the show to get its sea legs. They'd come back from a very long hiatus. To me, he was absolutely right. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two, but Last Vow really worked for me.

Tried it on my iPad but can't get the letters to stay where I move them. I'll have to try from a desktop later. -
Also, I suspect a large part of her lashing out at him was her own anger at him (and fear) for possibly taking himself out of her world. When she's scolding him, she's speaking as much for herself as she is the people who care about him. *edit* It reminds me of a scene from an episode of Doctor Who titled Vincent And The Doctor.

Not at all. It makes her her own person when she finally puts aside her feelings of inferiority and subordination. She moves past being an enamored school girl and stands as his equal. Not as a detective or an intellect, but as a person, which is even more powerful.. So much so that she sees it necessary to scold him for his behavior. In that regard, as a suspected addict having lied to the people who care about him, he's a subordinate.

Loved it, loved it. Excellent stuff. Not even sure where to begin. LOVED Molly hitting Sherlock repeatedly and then scolding him. I love her strength with him. That scene blew me away. She's so heavy in it, so much her very own person taking matters into her own hands. *swoon* ;-) I KNEW there was something to Mary! She looked completely at home in her assassin's gear. I like that even though there is some healing between them, she mentions that it has been months. The distrust and the hurt are deep and real. John has to really make peace with it all and it doesn't happen over night, just as it wouldn't in real life. Second viewing tomorrow, so I'll have a better handle on my thoughts. Outstanding. Best of season three, by far. Glad they showed the plane turning around. Knowing that we have a year at least before another episode, I didn't want a cliffhanger. We got enough mystery to keep us pondering during the long break, but not so much that it becomes a burden. Again, hats off to this episode. Fantastic.
