What would you like to see in series 4?
by the sea replied to T.o.b.y's topic in Special and Series 4
Personally, I like Janine. She's outgoing and lively and not unattractive. I can actually see her having a laugh with Sherlock every now and again ... assuming he's in the mood and she's not working for any arch-criminals. I don't think I'd want to see her in every episode but she doesn't bother me. And ... didn't Mrs. Holmes book have something to do with the Dynamics of Combustion ? Or did I just make that up ? I'm unclear. Moriarty liked to blow things up. Wouldn't it be amazing if Mr. Holmes was the ultimate criminal mastermind ? He was the one that Mary called "sane" ... so maybe he's not so much ... maybe the rest of the family was driven to be the way they are by his artful manipulations. We could watch those manipulations unfold in S4. Debbie -
When Mycroft presents Sherlock's case to Lady Smallwood and her fellow whatever-they-ares, do you think he ever expected Sherlock to survive in Eastern Europe ? I just got the bleakest feeling that nobody thought he would get out alive and that was the trade off he'd made for killing CAM. He'd either face the gallows (I'm assuming that capital punishment doesn't exist in the UK and embarrassed to say, as a Commonwealth citizen, I don't really know.) or life in prison or die in some heroic endeavour in some foreign land on behalf of MI6. It was such a relief when JM showed up and Sherlock had to be rerouted. Saved by the lunatic ! I really need to watch this ep again ! Debbie ... just got peanut butter all over my keyboard. Ewww.

We may know because in the hospital room after Janine has shown Sherlock the tabloids she does look at him kind of whistfully and say something like: Once would have been nice. And he comes back with: I was waiting until we were married. Rats ! I missed that little exchange. Well, there goes that fantasy. I must watch that episode again. Debbie

LOL ! We don't know that for sure ! That's something I hope we never get to find out ! Anyway, back to John being romantic ... I hope I'm not too far away from the current posts ... one of the substitute words for romantic in my handy-dandy online thesaurus is "chivalrous" and I think that, in my conception of the word, it describes John right down to the ground. According to the dictionary this is it: chiv.al.ry: /ˈʃɪvəlri/ Show Spelled [shiv-uhl-ree] noun, plural chiv·al·ries 1. the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms John went to war to stand up for his country and his beliefs. He can be abrasive but for the most part, he's polite enough and does understand many of the social graces. He gives his time and personal effort freely in the cause of justice. He's fearless and brave and can sprain people with amazing skill. So ... by definition, he's a romantic ! Debbie

Wow ! This thread is getting way ahead of me. I'm going to have to stop working and just stay on the forum ... much more interesting ... but pays a lot less !! This is an interesting question. In spite of his posturing arrogance, Magnussen proves to be something of a sniveling coward when looking up the muzzle of Mary's gun ... who wouldn't, I suppose, but he didn't seem to handle it with the coolness I'd have expected. He holds the power to destroy anybody at whim and he doesn't even have to be right or be able to prove his allegations. As he said to John "I don't have to prove it, you moron. I just have to print it." So he is able to lie and get away with it if he wants to because nobody ever calls him to task. When it goes in his newspapers, people believe it. Then that moves right along to Sherlock and Janine. When she sells her story to the tabloids and buys her "escape to the country", she says to Sherlock "you lied and lied". She tells him they could have been friends except for his lies. So ... Magnussen and Sherlock are both liars. Why do we let Sherlock get away with it and hate Magnussen for it ? I guess because when all is said and done, Sherlock lies for the angels and Magnussen lies for profit. And ... Sherlock and Janine looked like they could possibly work on that friendship after all as their parting wasn't acrimonious, Debbie

LOL ! I wonder what Mr. C. would think of Mark Gatiss looking more like his parents that he does ! Personally, I can't imagine Mark/Mycroft ever being children ... well, maybe Mark since I don't know him. I believe Mr. and Mrs. Holmes both had grey to white hair. As a matter of fact, I remember seeing an episode of Foyle's War and one of the character actors, playing the role of a senior military officer was a very distinguished older gentleman with very white hair and that man was Timothy Carlton (Cumberbatch). I like the idea of the inclusion of Sherlock's parents ... particularly as they're played by Mr. C's real-life parents ... does anybody notice a family resemblance ? I'm not really seeing it ! Anyway, just imagine what it must have been like to have Mycroft and Sherlock as toddlers running round the yard ! Wowsers . It seems Mrs. Holmes is her generation's family brain. Mary comments to Mr. Holmes that he is the "sane" one. They clearly have done something right, because, despite protestations, they all show up together for Christmas ... the boys smoking out on the walkway as if they were naughty teenagers. It's an interesting little change of pace. Debbie

Just reading these posts and thinking about why I like Mary so much. I think of her as a better socialized, female version of Sherlock on some level. Obviously they've arrived at their current places in different ways but their instant acceptance of each other and her humorous reaction to his complete misunderstanding of John's anger at his sudden reappearance in TEH shows a kind of psychological similarity they both see right away. They "get" each other and for somebody as socially out of step as Sherlock, that has to be some kind of relief ... an "Oh good ... it's Mary" sort of thing. Debbie

Series 4 Rumors
by the sea replied to biscuitbear's topic in Special and Series 4 Locations [Possible Spoilers]
Oh yes, please ... I want more ! I'm new to this fandom and have watched all of the series in relatively fast time ... starting series one and two late last year thanks to Netflix. The whole concept of that being it ... over and done, goodbye ... is terrible to me ! I love these characters and fervently pray for new episodes ... even one a year would do me if it had to ! Even a Christmas episode, although I gotta admit Christmas episodes are not usually my favourite things . Debbie -
Distraction sounds good to me. I was reading online that there was talk Series 4 might start filming sometime at the end of this summer ... bearing in mind that here in Eastern Canada we're expecting snow tonight so I think Summer is actually a figment of somebody's evil imagination ... Jim Moriarty perhaps ... but now that is unlikely. So, goodness knows when we'll see it. Suffice it to say that HLV has all of the characters in a good place ... Sherlock is back, John and Mary are expecting a girl they won't call Sherlock ... John's chair is in Sherlock's flat so any time he wants to he can use it ... Mycroft is still able to persuade the British government that there is a need for the likes of Sherlock Holmes ... and JM is plotting bad things all over the place. Sheesh ... that only makes it harder to wait, doesn't it ? Debbie

Thanks, Carol ! I'm going to start a little dabbling myself ... my e-book reader had the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle for $2.99 ! I haven't read as many of the actual Sherlock stories as many people here seem to have done, although I have read some ... a long time ago. So, I'm going to brush up on my Sherlock ! I'm hoping the picture of Mr. Cumberbatch communicating with witnesses on several laptops all at once won't interfere with trying to get back to Victorian England. I'm afraid it might be hard to ignore the memory of the fluffy curls ! Debbie

Watched this ep last night. I feel a sense of grief when it's over because I know how long I'll have to wait until I get to see Sherlock and John and the gang again. I shake my head at this as I have the DVDs for all 3 series and can watch them whenever I want to, but I want more ... I want new stories ... I want more Sherlock !! I don't honestly think I've felt this way about a TV show before. What have Moftiss done to me ?? Debbie

He grows it. And complains about it (thinks it looks kinda girly). But it's not his natural color (which is sort of a light auburn), so he has to dye it. Thanks, Carol! And I've noticed in any interviews I've seen when Mr. C is not in Sherlock mode, his hair is flat ... and not the fluffy, curly tresses of his character. So, I imagine it takes a little effort on the part of the company stylist to keep it in the style we all love so much. So maybe he doesn't appreciate the fuss of it. Could be a nuisance trying to do your job when sombody is running after you with the hair spray ! Debbie

I think it was The Blind Banker where Sherlock's old schoolmate gave him a cheque for his services. Sherlock dismissed it but John took it and guarded it carefully. That's the only time I recall seeing any payment received for services rendered. I'm assuming the rent on 221B, even if Mrs. Hudson feels an obligation, would be substantial. Sherlock is always well-dressed and well-groomed and he said once he has "lots of coats". He and John go everywhere by taxi but when they went to Baskerville, they were driving a Land Rover, which would have to be a pricey rental. John is a doctor but that doesn't spell instant riches in the UK, I wouldn't think. Just look at the venue for the wedding ! Must have cost a fortune ! So ... where does all this money come from ? I can see Mycroft subsidizing Sherlock, but I doubt he'd do it for John. Maybe Mary saved it up from her "hit man" earnings ! Debbie Debbie

Watched this ep last night. I'm being careful here ... TEH kind of got me on a roll. So funny when Lestrade asked Molly what could possibly go wrong if John asked Sherlock to be his best man. What could go right ? But, of course, it did go right and there wasn't a dry eye in the house ... some of the time, anyway. The crime had me a bit confused the first time I watched this but now I'm able to pull out the parts to make sense of it. I like Mycroft ... we've been through this and I'm one of the viewers who isn't looking for the soul of the matter so I accept him at face value, most of the time ... but when he asked Sherlock if he remembered Red Beard, I wanted to give him a thump ! This was a time when I could hear him say "don't get too invested 'cause I have ways of breaking the connection" and it bothered me a lot. Of course, Sherlock leaving early was sad but not unexpected ... and, yes, I have seen it before and knew it was coming ! He's the odd man out and always will be but he made some inroads towards sociability so ..."What a Night ?". Anyway, I keep going back to how much that amazing wedding must have cost. Holy Moley ! Amen to that, Pamela ! Sorry ... I think I might have started off this latest controversy. Well, I'm not sorry really ... doing my Moriarty impression here . It's good to see people feel so passionate about all of this. Not to get too personal, but I live with an elderly person who is totally incapable of suspending disbelief ... every episode of every television show is roundly condemned for every single element that isn't true to life. Fantasy, sci-fi, comic book fiction are all "stupid" and totally beyond her grasp. Possibly as a defence mechanism, I've developed a strong interest in many things outside my daily routine ... space travel (on the Star Ship Enterprise), Harry Dresden, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sherlock's big, funny brain. We've discussed this before when I noted that I was afraid my opinions were too shallow for some of the passionate people I've seen posting here. But for me, it's more important to enjoy the story, the wonderful acting, the great locations and the fun I have watching. I don't want to dwell on a character's morality or lack of same. I'm pleased there are people who can get so into it and find such thoughful stimulation from the stories and each new viewing brings more and more of the subtext to life but mostly, for myself, I'm happy to simply suspend my disbelief and let the stories unfold. Oh, yeah ! Mary is a complicated character and I can see people not liking her. She's so capable, though. And for all her history, she's so human. And she makes John happy ... and I like to see John happy !

Watched this episode again last night. I hadn't even thought about whether Sherlock would have come back from Serbia of his own accord. I'd have thought he would, given that, at some point, doesn't he say something like "who am I without my blogger ?". The draw back to Watson was strong. I keep hearing John say at Sherlock's grave in TRF "I was so alone". So poor, ol' John has had to come a long, long way to move on and, to a large extent, he's actually succeeded ... he's got a medical practice (even though all his patients seem to have very ordinary maladies for sure !), he's found love and his life, in spite of his air of what looks to me like resignation ... with the exception of Mary ... seems to be going along as well as can be expected. He believes that his best friend and the source of all the excitement in his life is gone and this is what he has to do for himself. And then along somes Sherlock and makes everything topsy-turvy ... just like he did at the very beginning of their relationship but with all that history added to the mix. Personally, I'd be angry, too. And, my goodness, it's so incredibly funny ! Every so often you get the impression that it might have dawned on Sherlock just what he's done to Watson's world and then it sort of passes. Mary says to Sherlock "you don't understand human nature at all, do you ?" and he seems surprised. But, when all is said and done, he'd do anything to save John ... despite making fun of him in the underground car. That's why he faked his death and that's why he didn't let John in on the secret ... to keep John safe. BTW ... I like Mary. In spite of what's to come and who she used to be, I like Mary. LOL ! My thoughts exactly when I saw this little creature, Carol ! Are there such things as pygmy hippopotamuses ... goodness, that's a BIG word ! Now I want to break into the song the wireless company used for their Christmas ads a couple of years ago ... I want a hippopotamus for Christmas ... only a hippopotamus will do ! Debbie

Just watched this episode again ... I started watching them all again the other day. I think it's the third time now for series one and two and will be the second for series three. I think this ep went on a little long but mostly I really like it ... got such a kick out of John and Sherlock ... still in his sheet ... laughing like little boys in the reception room at Buckingham Palace and stealing the ash tray. Sherlock whispering to Irene that he felt her pulse quicken and saw her pupils dilate when he touched her was quite interesting ... you could see she realized he wasn't completely in her power. And ... I think he did save her in Karachi ... really. The look of satisfaction on his face kind of said it all. Mr. Cumberbatch's unusual face is so expressive ! Debbie

Whew ! Just digging out from the latest blizzard. Spent 3 hours shoveling this morning. I have 2 driveways (what was I thinking ?? ) and my garage driveway has totally disappeared and, of course, my snowblower is in the garage ! Left the car outside in the other driveway just to be sure but had to shovel for 3 hours to set it free. What a wonderful winter !! Anyway, I think my Swedish friend meant that I sounded more like him than any other native English-speaker he had met. Interestingly enough, he actually did sound like me and vice versa ... his English not having the sort of British accent you hear from lots of Europeans ... the basic sound was quite similar. He'd "perfected" his English watching TV ! I watch a lot myself. Debbie
